I'm kind of a newbie to MtG, though I know the general rules and game structure. I also have an idea of what colors I want in that deck: black, blue, and red. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate that.
I'm not particularly bothered about formats. I think the default format is standard, but more than anything, I want to just play the game. I'll think about those other formats once I get better, perhaps.
Rather than colors, you should ask yourself, what kind of strategy you want to pursue. How do you intend the game to go and how are you going to win. This will dictate your card choices, and it will dictate your colors. Starting with colors is at best a limitation on the card pool, but not a start for a deck. So, in what direction do you want to go? Aggro, control, midrange (which is mostly a mix of the two), combo? Do you fancy a certain card or cards to build around? Some specific mechanic? What is it about your chosen colors, that draws you into them? And do you really have to go 3-colored from the get go? That's perfectly viable, but already demands great attention to and investment on the mana base.
I also don't know much about specific cards, but in terms of strategy, I want something that can completely shut down anything my opponent can do. The combination of black and red, from my understanding, equates to a hyper-aggressive playstyle that can make decisive plays within a matter of turns. I want to combine that with the control aspects of blue to ensure that, if I can get myself a good hand, I can basically negate any advantage the other guy may have had, while at the same time building up a potential OTK on my side. Sorry, I'm a very unfun player. My favorite decks in yugioh, which I haven't played in a long time, involve insta-win gimmicks.
