The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I almost played tezz as well! Ended up going 3-4 with painter instead though. Had some good fun. Hit a lot of rough matchups that I think I would have been better off with tezz.

I was 3-1 going into round 5, but then I lost three in a row to finish 3-4 as well. Those three losses were Dark Maverick, Punishing Jund, and BUG Delver. Some of the losses were due to misplays (like not Force of Willing a Knight of the Reliquary, then getting Wastelanded every turn), while others couldn't really be helped (such as turn 2 Hymn to Tourach hitting my only two blue sources - Polluted Delta and Talisman of Dominance - or getting Choked on turn 2, then proceeding to only draw Island-based blue sources and absolutely no mana rocks).

So I'm moving to Cupertino soon, do any of you guys play around there? I've been playing since Alara, mostly EDH, Modern, and drafts, but I wouldn't mind getting back into standard if that's what is competitive in the area.
I dont know about Cupertino in particular, but there are a lot of players of various disciplines in the South Bay. Cupertino is only about 15 minutes away from the Channel Fireball game center in Santa Clara.
I know some of this thread is a bit inland, trending towards Vacaville, so just a heads up: it looks like there's a new store in Davis and they're trying to get monthly Legacy going on the first Sunday of each month.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

Because he's the hero MTGS deserves, and the one it needs right now. So we'll global him. Because he can take it. Because he's not just our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. An expired rascal.

What's the name of the store?
Davis Cards and Games.
They actually started this month, meaning that it was on Pre-release weekend. Even with that (as what I assume would be a handicap), they still successfully fired with 10 people. Prize structure was a fair distribution to Top4 (from memory, it was 100% payout of fees collected)

I don't think I've ever posted here before, but here goes.
There's some interesting stuff going in in my neck of the woods (general Los Angeles area). New shops are popping up, competition is starting to intensify, staff (from clerks to managers) are moving around more than ever, and it mostly seems to be benefiting players.
Next-Gen Games along the Miracle Mile has set up a pseudo-sponsorship deal and an official "Team Next-Gen" for GPLA 2016. I believe the deal is people who join and top 8 get 75% discount on future purchases. Turn Zero Games is experimenting with offbeat formats (like Pauper) and hosting semi-seasonal infinite drafts. Other shops are dipping into or phasing out of MTG, with mixed results. Freddy's Sk8 Shop, Mega City One, and Top Card Collectibles are all in this category.
Heyya folks...I wanted to let you all know about our large playgroup, deep in the heart of San Francisco. Come join us! We usually get 15-30 people every session.

We have reserved the upstairs area. Just go inside and go to the back left and go upstairs. Maybe grab a beer too.
This place has 24 beers on tap. The beer selection is insane.
This place serves food. You should buy some food or drinks to play with us if you possibly can. If you only want a coke, ok, but please please buy some food from the bar. They have great bar food, and most of it is reasonably priced.

We play many different variants of multiplayer magic. Please, no proxies, or very few if at all possible.
We usually play
Duels
Star (sometimes called Pentagonal)
Commander
Tiny Leaders
Emperor
2-Headed Giant (or more!)
Left-right Attack
Assassin
Team variants of each of the above! Crazy fun.
And More!
Hear what others have to say about the Magic meetup!

"Don't go. These morons think they know how to play magic, but my legacy goblin deck can kill em all. I just have to remember to bring it next time."
--Bob
"I brought a vintage deck filled with proxy moxes. I won even before my opponents got to take their first turn! How cool is that! Of course, the next game I waited around while everyone destroyed everything i had in quick succession. But that's ok, I had fun!"

Bigger Better Games in Fremont, CA is consistently firing 10-proxy "casual" legacy events on Sundays at 2:00pm. Buy-in from $10-$15 (depending on how many noobz show up)
Because of the proxy level and the number of old-school players, the meta is decently developed. I've seen basically every pricey deck represented (and a good bit of rogue and budget, of course).

Here are the little self-imposed guidelines I'm working with for the multiplayer decks I've been building:
• Must be cheap. Total price tag < $100, preferably < $50. Ideally ~$30. No one card greater than about ~$6
• Format: Modern (makes getting the cards somewhat easier for the play group, and almost all my cards are Modern-legal)
• Must be relatively interesting in 1:1 games. I don't need to win against Splinter Twin, but I should be able to play duels now and then
• Avoid instant-win combos; they only serve to make me target #1, and then the deck is worse than useless because I get killed first, every time
• Must have a funny name!
I moved to San Francisco last year and have been playing at Versus in SF mainly. I play mainly Standard but have Modern (Infect) and EDH. Looking to step up my game and start competing outside of FNM.
If any SF play groups are looking for another grinder, hit me up!

Hi friends! I'm trying to get back into paper MtG after about 8 years off (thanks Arena) and I'm looking for a relatively casual group to play EDH/Commander with in the Oakland/Berkeley/Alameda area. I know there's a big group in SF but I'm hoping to find something closer than that. Thanks!

Sidenote: I wanted to mention that I made a thread about my own playgroup today. Check it out on here and on Facebook and tell me what you think.
I'm officially proposing we retire the word "insane" from the MtG vocabulary.
