So I posted the same question on reddit and came here to ask because I literally got flamed for mentioning that I'm an idiot savant, WHICH IS NOT A GOOD THING. Schizophrenia is not fun and it makes me seem like I'm addicted to drugs. On the other hand a rare percentage of schizophrenics aren't only idiots and have the savant thing as well, I'm one of them.
I've been playing commander for two weeks with a crimson vale precon that I modified myself. I'm doing altogether too well for a new player because of the savant part. On top of it, like most schizophrenics, I seem like a drug addict partially because of the schizophrenia symptoms I can't control, and that I'm prescribed one of the same medications drug addicts abuse.
I have about half the store convinced I'm lying about being new, and the other half trying to defend me.
So one of the guys trying to defend me told me to modify another precon if I want a second deck (which I do). Most people seem to agree with him.
I want to make a Toski deck with anything other than Voltron style. I'm not sure why the hell people are trying to talk me out of trying to make the Toski deck. I honestly think they think it will cause more problems with the people who don't think I'm new if it happens to be good. But after modifying the vampire deck, I think deck building might be my favorite part and I really want to make one from scratch.
I have $200 and a hand full of cards that could work with the toski deck set aside. I'm of the opinion that if the store is so toxic that making my dream deck could cause problems, I might not wanna play there. On the other hand I've been to multiple stores in my area and this is the only one where people are giving me half of a chance.
Being an odd combination of seeming like a drug addict and being slightly gifted is something I can't control.
I just really want to make this commander deck and I feel it's unfair that I'm limited by people that can't fathom a player who's learning the game faster than them.
Before I played MTG I considered myself kind of useless regardless of what the psychologists said. Now I found something I'm good at and I'm being shunned for being good at it.
I just want to make a Toski deck, and I'm completely tired of everything I do being critiqued by the entire store. I just really like the idea of mono green card draw. The idea is to have unlimited hand size and draw up a bunch of situational cards so I have an answer for every situation. I don't know if that's good but I want to try it.
TLDR: The problem I have with making a Toski deck is if it's good it will add fuel to the fire for the people convinced I'm lying about being new. I literally can't play the deck I want because if it's a success it will give players more reason to go on the attack in a social manner.
Also, a side note, I've stopped introducing myself as new and just ask questions when I don't know something. It's not really helping because it's a small store, but it's the best I can come up with. I also haven't told anyone in real life that I'm gifted in any way. I'm just telling you guys because you're strangers on the internet and should understand that this isn't a brag post.
Build the deck you want to build, especially if you think you will have fun playing it. Try to always bring a back up deck though, because some play groups have a specific power level they want to play at. Toski has the potential to scale better than the commanders in many precons which might be their concern, but I really couldn't say.
If people are treating you poorly in the store for any reason, but especially for reasons beyond your control like your medical history, I think the best course of action if you want to continue playing there is to talk with the store management beforehand so they know your needs how they can help you when conflicts arise.
I'm not sure I understand the reason why it matters whether they think you're a new player or not. Are they actively not sending their creatures at players who are new, for example? Are they unwilling to help answer game play or rules questions?
