I just got back into the game after about 5 years away from it. Mostly thanks to Arena being released.
I'm not entirely sure just how far off rotation is, which is why I've decided to ask this.
Anyway, I greatly prefer the paper game and enjoy going to events, but I don't have anything I can use in Standard right now, which is my preferred format.
With rotation coming some time this Fall, I question if I could build anything for Standard that would be worth investing in, as it's all going to change come the Fall rotation.
What do you guys think? Would it be worth investing in a deck? Or should I wait till rotation to get back into the paper game?
Rotation literally just happened earlier this month. If you buy primarily from the new Guilds of Ravnica set, you'll be able to use those cards in standard for a good while. The standard metagame has yet to settle at this point, which is great for players who like to brew decks. If you aim for the more proven decks in the format, building a white/blue/x control deck is great if you like that style of gameplay.
Traditionally cards start expensive and go down in price quickly.
Cards that see play, especially in older formats can go up somewhat significantly, especially if they are mythic. Pelt Collector did that, but its far away from a big money card.
Dual lands are a good investment to get them during the time packs are opened, the prices are quite low and after the set rotates at some point they hold value quite well and are always good to trade with as they continue to matter in modern and plenty of EDH decks.
----
Cards that only really matter in standard and in no other format lose tremendous amounts of value when they rotate, so its quite important to get rid of them like to the latest a month before rotation.
----
Investing in Ravnica does not look like a good plan, as the vast majority of the cards simply does not carry value and are unlikely to become crazy expensive.
Are quite cheap at this point and have high potential to be much more relevant as they are "breakable" cards that can very well transition to older formats too.
(So even foils, if you can get them for cheap, just stock up)
Its also breakable as it really asks for cheap expensive creatures or combo cards to work with.
It already does work in Legacy and might do so in Modern too, and does its job in pretty much any EDH deck that can cast it.
Can be snatched for cheap and if it takes off, profit (and if not, still good enough for lots of decks).
Alright. I'm a little confused here. All of you are saying that nothing will be rotating out for quite some time, but according to whatsinstandard.com, Ixalan to Dominaria will be rotating out in Q4 of 2019 (as in Fall 2019, according to my research.) All Standard decks that I'm seeing right now are using cards from these sets.
Is this site wrong? Because that is what was causing my hesitation to build a deck IRL.

That is correct. There's a rotation in the fall of every year. That's the way Standard works, there will always be cards getting played in good decks that will be rotating within the next year. We're pretty much at the max time between rotations right now. If you aren't comfortable with the cards rotating you may want to look into playing Modern instead of Standard.

And this is why I don't play standard. Rotation occurs every year. If you build a deck it will not be playable in standard within two years. With the extreme price fluctuations in eternal formats, I'm focusing on casual formats for now. Pauper, Commander, and other similar formats that don't require as much monetary investment. Magic overall is in an awkward place with the rumors that wizards is being packaged for a sale, and Hasbro's recent changes in how they monetize the game. If you can stomach the format (and price tag) modern is an option. Shock lands are currently being reprinted, so it's not a terrible time to buy in.
The really good news for you in this standard is that shock lands are the foundation of most manabases, and you may have them from previous sets. Plus, even if you have to buy them, shocks see play in tons of modern decks. The $30-40 you need to buy a playset will be very usable once they rotate and will still be in demand to trade for other mid-level standard cards as they rotate out.

See, if this was the worst part, I would play Standard. But in most circumstances you can´t even expect to play your deck for a year if you want to stay competitive, because even inside the rotation period they always print cards that are good against the ones that they printed a few sets ago, which keeps it fresh, sure, but also hoses your deck so that you have to build another. Or a set spawns a new archetype that becomes 15% of the meta and completely owns your deck, so that you have to change it up. So if you want to stay competitive, you have to keep up all the time.
Some people enjoy that, and love Standard for it. If you can take the hassle and the expense, it´s fun to get a brand new format shakeup every three months. But if you don´t, you might want to stay away. Just don´t expect the deck that you build right now to be solid for a year, that´s too optimistic.

If at all, buy the cheap red cards for like ~1$ , stuff like
Arclight Phoenix
Experimental Frenzy
Runaway Steam-Kin

Another big one might be :
Lazav, the Multifarious

Don't sink money into MtG expecting to see it back again.
