As topic states. I don't have any friends on campus who play modern and there's only one store that does a weekly modern event nearby. I need my fix.

Current Modern Decks BG Elves // "He's back. And he brought his friends. And their friends." BG The Rock // "Dwayne Johnson approved." RU Izzet Phoenix // "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." UGW Bant Spirits // "Super Ghost Bros." BUG Sultai Wildnerness Teachings // "How many turns did I just take again?" C Colorless Eldrazi // "Smash you."
I think it's a good idea if you don't have anyone to play with and you have the spare time to do so, but ultimately, it's your choice. I also think it's good because you play all different sorts of decks, not the same old boring ones each week. But, again, your choice.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and it's a good way to playtest new cards before buying them in real life, as MTGO is cheaper than paper.

My apologies,
The reason I say no is because of what I have seen in the reviews of this online version. Currently paying into this with all the bugs reminds me too much of early access video games and I swore off that stuff after so many burns. With actual cards you walk away with something, with this you are just shredding your money with not but the promise of the game staying around long enough to get your money's worth of entertainment.
To the Original poster, take this from someone with 23 plus years of buyers remorse in general. "If you are interested in buying into something research it." I would recommend going to youtube and look at what the critics say about it.

Either way I looked up how much money it would cost to build my Merfolk deck in MTGO and I don't have another $150 to drop willy nilly haha

You may be thinking of MTG Arena. It's easy to convert MTGO cards into cash.
You ignored what else I wrote, it is a buggy game right now. Any new video game that is buggy and still being worked on is not a wise choice to dump money into. Especially since WOTC and Hasbro have a history of doing poorly in the online arena, both Hasbro's Online Toy Shop and MTGO have not had a particularly good track record.
So I will say it again, it is a bad idea to put money into a prerelease game, wait and see if this is going to actually work out.
