I have recently started playing Magic the Gathering, and my only store in range with cards only has Intro Packs and maybe boosters. On top of that, the only sets they have Intro Decks from are Fate Reforged, Battle for Zendikar, Eldritch Moon, and Shadows Over Innistrad. I enjoy playing against my friend and myself, (I tend to battle myself a lot, to find the best use of my decks). My strongest decks I have tend to be the "Elves vs Inventors" Duel Decks, and the Call of Blood deck, and have modified them. I don't care for anything competitive, I mainly just like to play with cool new mechanics and play-styles.
From the sets, I already have Unearthed Secrets, Call of Blood and Stampeding Hordes.
Mainly I just want to know which of the other 17 decks are the strongest in low beginner level, or that have a mechanic that they revolve around. Also I don't really have a good control deck, so also I'd like to know if there's any good control decks in the 12.
(The 17 decks are Unflinching Assault, Cunning Plan, Grave Advantage, Surprise Attack, Swarming Instinct, Eldrazi Assault, Zendikar's Rage, Unlikely Alliances, Dangerous Knowledge, Shallow Graves, Untamed Wild, Weapons and Wards, Ghostly Tide, Vampiric Thirst, Angelic Fury, and Horrific Visions.)
Apologies as this is an oddly specific thread, and I am new here.
The only one I'd even think about would be Dangerous Knowledge - Bedlam Reveler is at least worth a couple bucks, Niblis of Frost is a reasonable creature, and I could at least envision it being built up into an ok kichen table deck.
But looking at that list, you can still see how little WotC cares about making those decks good - only 3 copies of Take Inventory and Galvanic BlastGalvanic Bombardment (not even great cards, but they need to be played as 4-ofs or not at all), only basic lands, splitting Thermo-alchemist and Sanguinary Mage and putting in situational junk like Turn Aside and Shreds of Sanity to rot in hand in a deck built to tap out on your turn for Prowess triggers.
Just curious: Where are you that you can't buy anything more recent than these decks? In my experience big box stores, and even drugstores, stock precons and boosters from no later than last year.
Yes, I would not buy intro packs consisting of no-longer-Standard-legal cards. If you want a preconstructed deck that can be competitive, I would order one of the recent Challenger Decks online if possible - these decks have essentially more value in them than the sticker price, and you can play them and hold your own at FNM right out of box. If you want to play casually with a precon I would get one of the latest planeswalker decks or one of the upcoming Commander 2018 decks.
yea challenger decks are awesome. i own the hazoret aggro deck. its a beast out the box. i also bought 3 of the new m19 planeswalker decks. i got the tezzeret, vivien the arkbow and sarkhan. i played with all of them and so far viven seems to be the strongest. if your local store doesnt have them try walmart. they have the new stuff
