im not sure if Cockatrice will run on linux. I assume magic solitaire is the same as goldfishing?
You could literally play a duel against yourself with two of your decks. I did this quite extensively years ago to test and better my decks that I would eventually pitch against my friends' concoctions. You obviously have complete information about both decks, but you can still play each deck as if you only had that deck's info, thus letting it walk into combat tricks, etc. This also gets you thinking about what may be possible for the other deck to interfere and in consequence makes you conscious of those possibilities when facing other peoples' decks later. And, you can analyze a critical situation with a degree of scrutiny that you normally wouldn't have the time for in an actual game, testing out possible plays and their consequences. Heck, you can even note down the exact game state of a particularly interesting scenario with life totals, cards in hand, top couple cards in the libraries, etc. and play through all the possibilities.
Obviously, there will be some bias, since you know what you are trying to do with each deck in any given turn, and you can't practice reading your opponent. But it certainly helps with fine tuning your decks, practice sidebarding, and finding the best play for similar situations in real games.
This is a fairly shameless plug, but in terms of Magic activities you can do solo, may I suggest custom cards? We also have a variety of contests and games.
i would play by myswlf but i still dont know how to fully play? dont know how tokens work and all that other new stuff i played in middle school and that was a long time ago. thats why im trying to find a way to play and learn.
you mean like making up a card? if thats the case that sounds super dumb no offense. cuz im pretty sure i can make an unbeateble card. im pretty sure yall can too.
i downloaded cockatrice it seems to be working but its not letting me save my deck. it says please check directory is writeble and try again. what does that mean? can anyone help?

Of course anyone can. That is easy and not at all what was suggested. The suggestion was predicated on a Magic activity that you could do solo (and since you already took "sorting your cards" out as an option, that implied non-game activities were fair game for suggestions). It is more about doing what the designers and developers do: making cards for this game that are not broken, that explore new ground, that are fun, and a host of other things. It takes a wildly different skill set than just playing (which is why I don't do it) but it is an option for doing something solo that many enjoy doing.
As for actually playing the game, you could always try to get into the Arena Beta (not sure if it is open or closed or what it would take to get in) or playing one of the older Magic Duels games. If you are just getting back into the game, these are fine avenues to explore.
I often build decks and just goldfish them. You can find a way to play them against another deck that you are also piloting as Rezzahan suggested, but I often find playing my deck by itself is fun and informative as well as I get a feel for how the deck plays and some of the lines I can take with it. I do it more with EDH decks but I will sometimes sit down and play my Modern decks by themselves too.
i know the basic rules the untap upkeep main phase etc.. its the in between that im having problems wit. i havent found a guide yet that helps you in depth yet

That is still vague. "In between" what? Are you saying you don't know what happens when going from one step to another? Nothing (more or less). Everything has to happen in a Step or Phase. Are you saying "in between steps" as in "steps between <Step A> and <Step B>"? Does the guide I linked to give you any help at all?
I think you will find a number of people willing to help you in a number of things (such as the question you led this thread with as well as the current conversation about rules) but you need to be clearer in what you are actually having problems with. Are there game examples you can come up with to help illustrate where some of your problems lie? Any card interactions you are not sure about?
ok so i just finished my first game since ever and i got my butt handed to me. 45 to 0. i thought my cards did one thing but they did the opposite. i was confused during the whole match. i ran a merfolk deck i made. let me put it this way i need to learn everything.
some cards do 3 things at a time and i thought i could do it everytime i tapped it but i guess not.
i need to learn about blocking , haste ,trample hexproff, etc..... everything.
im on cockatrice if anyone has the time to help. god im hopeless lol

If you have trouble understanding the basics, first go through a basic guide like WizardMN suggested. You can't expect to go anywhere if you don't have a firm grasp of the fundamentals: card types, zones, turn structure, timing and priority, etc. and the principles associated with them. Don't assume, that you know those things, the rules have changed a lot since you last played. Better to simply start from scratch. If you have the time and determination, you can even try to tackle the mighty Comprehensive Rules themselves, though they are not an easy read. If you are unclear of something in the guide or the CR, you can always just ask your question in the rules forum, we will be happy to provide answers and examples to help you, and even cite the various rules from the CR for you to look into. And we are usually very fast to answer, a few minutes is the norm. (Because this is how we rules gurus have fun besides playing the game.)
To learn about combat in detail, look up the CR rules 506.-511.
To learn about the various keyword abilities like hexproof, look them up in rules 702. (You can quickly find the specifc subrule by looking up the glossary at the end.)
To learn about the special vocabulary associated with various actions, those keyword actions are explained in rule 701.
best way to learn is to play irl with a friend imo. There are also local gaming stores where many mtg players come together and play. join in at a open house or something or just ask around to play some matches with some kind players.
i read the rules still dont get most rules i think i have to play. i learn hands on better.
played my second game did better brought him down to 9 while i had 18. but then he had a 15/15 and a 10/10 and destroyed me

You can always download Magic Duels for free (although it is no longer being supported) on a gaming system like Xbox. You can run through the tutorials and then play against the AI. If you have an Xbox Live account you can play against live opponents or every once a month or so you can play live for free. Its not like paper magic or MTGO, but it will give you a good feel for play and you can go from there.

Then absolutely the first thing you should do is read the rules. Doesn't have to be the CompRules all at once, but learn the basic rules by heart.
