Simple enough question. How many times a week do you play magic? Is it organized or casual? And how often would you prefer to play magic?
I ask this because I have recently returned to magic after a long hiatus. I only get to play once a week and it costs $10 to enter the tournament. $500 a year and that's not even the price of the deck. I built a budgeted deck for modern, which was a massive mistake, and I'm considering upgrading to a modern elves deck because I like the toolbox component and dual win conditions. This would be a large investment, and while I'm not necessarily debating the merits of investing in a competitive deck, I am wondering when that money becomes a good time investment.
I only get to play once a week, it's one of these LGS where people love to go 0-1 drop leaving me on byes after an inevitable loss in the first round. It almost feels like no one actually likes Magic, they only like winning tournaments. I'm curious if anyone else is in a similar predicament where they only get to play during organized play once a week, and what kind of investment have they made.
I play one session of casual EDH a week, on average. That's usually a few games of casual before people start showing up for FNM. When I play official events they're usually prereleases or drafts.
Over the last ten years I've probably put huge amounts of money into magic, but because I get most of my cards from events or trading I can mostly convince myself I'm only paying event entry fees

I play a friend of mine nightly via Cockatrice but I havent played with real cards in about 12 years. So I guess Im casually competitive as the decks we use are always Modern or Standard (past & present) decks
Interesting, no kitchen table magic yet. Maybe people that use mtgsalvation don't play casually with friends. I feel like if I had people to practice with outside FNM that I could really justify diving into an elves deck.
I play at the atore a couple of times a month, but I do play some quick games with my brotjer in law whrnever we get together in family meetings and took Goblins vs Merfolks to a trip with a friend this year and played a lot. I used to play with my son but he got into playing Modern and we only play for testing once in a while.
Commander and even Brawl are nice formats to have a nice game. People don't concede in draft much at all in my experience. Modern is probBly not thr most friendly format.
I play Commander with coworkers on Wednesdays, and at my LGS on Sundays. Wednesday usually gets 2 games in, Sunday gets many more.
Every now and then I'll do Limited at my LGS as well, and there's generally a Sealed league at work for each new set, that I sometimes participate in. I've also done Draft at work once or twice, though my coworkers run Drafts weekly.

Sounds like your FLGS needs to incentivize people to stick with the tournaments. I would suggest taking some of the packs that are going to the winners and moving those off to raffles for people who do not win any packs but who never the less played to the end of the tournament.

Huh, that's really weird. Personally after a loss in round one the last thing I want to do is leave. I want to play my deck more to get more insight on whether I actually drafted a bad deck, or if I just got unlucky. Sometimes I hate my deck from the start, but usually that's not the case. And no matter what I stick around. Going home on a loss always feels awful imo. I'd much rather lose round one and then win twice, rather than win twice and then lose - even though technically that's a better record.
Personally I draft at my LGS 1-2 times per week, and play commander/brawl at my LGS once a week, play winston drafts/pack wars with my girlfriend once every week or two at home, and max out prerelease weekend. And then a ton of time spent making commander decks at home, but I guess that doesn't really count.
I play Modern on Monday at one store, then Wednesday and Friday at another store. (all of this is Modern) I sometimes play on Tuesday at another store, but they don't always fire, so I'm hesitant to go. I play test whatever Season it is with my team on Thursday. And I play either whatever season it is (Standard right now) or Modern on Saturday and Sunday, traveling up to 65 mi. for these events.
In the past, it has been worth it because I've gotten it back and more in prizes, but I've been on a rough streak recently. Las Vegas (GP) would be a nice place to break out of it!

There's a very large swing in what people could call normal amounts of time spent in this game. Playing a couple times a year or a couple times a day can both fit into a pretty normal schedule if you want it to. I've done both of those, and I've found even just playing prereleases and the occasional game is satisfying enough for me.

Geez I drive 5 miles to play magic and often feel like it isn't worth the trip, I can't imagine driving 65 miles for a weekly tournament. I guess a problem I have is how much time you spend doing absolutely nothing while you play magic. I can't imagine driving 65 miles for a 4 round tournament and then winning or losing 4 turns in in every game and then spending 30 minutes each round waiting for the lantern player to wrap things up. I mean I bring books and videogames and snacks for between rounds, but in a 4 round modern tournament, it's pretty common to play for 15 minutes and then wait 30 minutesx4=2 hours for other players.
I don't know, it just feels kind of miserable participating in tournaments. Even in commander where it's super casual. You're playing for a bit, and then the hardcore combo guy is taking these 15 minutes turns and youre just sitting there waiting for your turn to start trying not to check your phone.
Anyone else have this problem where you commit yourself to an event or commander group and most the time you're not actually playing magic?
I enjoy the game. I enjoy the competition. I enjoy trying to hone my skills to nearly perfect. Yes, there is a lot of down time, but going to tournaments this often, I also have many friends or "pseudo" friends to be more accurate. We talk about Modern, Magic, and other stuff too. Sometimes, I only see these grinders at these tournaments because they don't live close to my LGS.
Right now, I have a lot of time to play because of life circumstances, so it's really the only thing that I have going for me right now. It's something to take my mind off other things. I mean, I guess I could drink instead or develop a heroin addiction... (or get fit again or something positive, lol)

Have you tried Untap.in? That's the one I'm starting to use since it's a web interface that doesn't require any installation. Honestly, I haven't played paper magic in months and the last time I really did a serious constructed FNM was Eldrich moon standard. I did draft Ixalan once just to see if maybe I could get into it, but time constraints and such made it impossible. Also, I found my own shortcomings due to having ADHD had a major impact on my ability to draft (It takes longer to come to a final decision on each pass than a person without. I've clocked it to about a difference of 15 seconds per every minute.)

Unfortunately I have to agree with you considering other TCGs I've branched into. The plus side is that because of draft singles that are playable have a lot of value, but because the floor to the card power level is like a sub-basement to the basement, there are way too many bad cards to each good card. Bad cards are necessary in a TCG as a learning tool, but excessive bad cards can make a game harder to learn. I know in origins I played people who were using Yoked Ox and healing hands with their win condition being to land a single copy of Deep-Sea Terror or a Sphinx of Magosi.

I play EDH/Commander on Friday nights after work and sometimes on Saturdays when I'm off during the weekend depending If I'm able to get a game or two going. Standard/Brawl rotation is hard for me to keep up with due to being preoccupied with other TCG's, Modern doesn't interest me as much as it once did especially since WotC is killing the format on purpose by taking advantage of the Secondary Market value of staple cards instead of banning problematic cards that they should've banned a long time ago. How does Standard get a pass but Modern doesn't?
Most of the time Pre-Release events aren't worth the cost due to the low expected value of cards being pulled unless I'm playing in a booster draft but even then I'd much rather play in a Draft Cube by having a more consistent card pool to work with. This is one of the reasons why I don't like playing the booster pack lottery anymore since you're never guaranteed to pull what you're wanting from the actual set unless you go out of your way to trade or buy singles. It wouldn't surprise me at all If they managed to rig the pull rates in order to increase the incentive to buy more booster packs.

OP, you said that players at your LGS will do a 0-1 drop?! After one loss? That's nuts! I've often heard of 0-2 drop, but that's because you're low in the rankings if you lose both your first matches. But just one? Recovery is totally possible after losing just the first match. 0-1 drop sounds like a terrible idea.
