I used to trade back in high school. But now that I have a job.. it's not worth the time and effort anymore. Paying a little extra by buying things online is still better than the hassle and time consuming effort in trading for cards that I need.
Also, I don't buy packs and boxes anymore... so there's almost no more trash cards piling up at home.
Well, I don't really buy packs either and just buy singles myself, but I don't think that assessment is quite accurate. Albeit, I guess the piles or past rares and mythics in the basement are kind of like trash +1? I keep imagining some person going down there and being like "oh, it's his past draft bulk from when he was going to the game store on Tuesday nights." Then he walks over, sees what it really is, and just goes "okay, forget that last remark. What am I looking at?!"

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
In general, a problem with barter is trouble finding someone who wants what you have and has what you want, including equivalent value for one large item.
A lot of people at the LGS do have trade binders, but I don't want to carry extra cards I won't have much time to do anything with. (Similarly, I don't bring decks not of the format I went to play)
I pulled a Karn, Scion of Urza that I was willing to unload, but no one had anything I wanted, even accepting that I'd have to trade down a bit. Since I'm not into Standard, other big Standard cards wouldn't help me.

Hmm, you have a point there. Although, I don't draft, too tired to attend those. The cards piling up at home now are from my habit of buying cheap but might be useful cards as sets come out.. for example, copters from Kaladesh, thrashing brontodon and kitesail freebooters from Ixalan, resilient khenra from amonkhet, etc. I stock them neatly in a shelf near my bed.. for future use in modern decks or fun decks.

That's basically what I do. I've got every remotely playable looking card going back to Origins, and I'm still picking up missing pieces from that set. Also still short on two Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

The crux of it seems to be the instant access to current prices. When I traded in middle school, we had a ~3 year old copy of The Duelist which we used to compare prices, which did nix some trades, but generally served as a guideline for not getting ripped off. People generally traded for cards that they needed for their decks, and aside from that, trades were pretty liberal. I picked up my Unlimited Sol Ring in trades, as well as some other Type 1 staples. Now, that would never happen because people would compare value until the trade is equal to the cent.
I feel like the shift comes from how useful/in-game value the card had to players to this investment-centric mentality that exists now. 4x of Hymn to Tourach is more valuable to me, with a discard deck, than a Karn would; even though there's a significant price disparity.
