Unstable had silly art, but it still managed to feel like Magic art to me because most of it had the right texture/level of detail. Battlebond, though... what do you think?
It looks a bit cartoony for sure. I noticed that immediately when I saw the first handful of creatures.
It's not really a bad thing, but compared to Dominaria, where a handful of the named characters look like actual Human beings (Idris Elba as Teferi, anyone?) Battlebond sort of feels like intentionally cartooned up and aimed at a younger crowd, maybe a ploy to get newer players involved?
From what I've seen this may be the first set that I buy zero packs of since I re-started collecting and playing in Time Spiral. (After a many year hiatus.) A lotto Doubling Season isn't going to be enough to sucker me in. I don't need to see more. Hardest of hard passes.

Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but sure some of the art is a little cartoony. But a.) as has been said let the rest of the set come out first and b.) it's not all that way there are some of the normal styles you'd expect already spoiled.
Again though, this isn't really a spoiler of any kind, could be wrong but I bet there's a better place for this thread.
So far the only issue I have with the art is for Doubling Season. It looks like that whole thing was built in Minecraft and then they backed way up and took a screeny.
Hm, I don't have problem with the ones you mentioned... though I have issues with some of the cards such as Bountiful Promenade, they look too CG oriented, and if you look at their larger resolution pics you'd notice they aren't detailed, just strong color contrast to make them look vibrant on cards only.
I'm happy with a feel-good cartoony set, I'm enjoying the character representations so far. But I do agree that a lot of the non-character art is painfully CGI and way too flat and plastic. Like zoom in on Bountiful Promenade and you'll see it looks just like the Sims or something.

It's curious, because the artist of Bountiful Promenade is Jung Park, and his other pieces prior weren't like this.

It really isn’t the right place. It’s not a rumor, just a statement. Should be moved to Magic General or another reverent board.
As far as the discussion. Way too early to judge based on the first cards. Sigh....guess it’s impossible either way to release a set without someone complaining about something. I’m waiting for the “see this is why we can’t bring back Coreset” post when the M19 hits.
A lot of people did not like the dour death-gloom-despair of Hours of Devastation, many others loathed the whimsy of the Ixalan cards, many other hated the optimistic steam punk of Kaladesh. There are even people that really hate the art in Dominaria. A set's art should refelct the tone of the setting. I wouldn't want all the bright colors of Ixalan in Innistrad. By the same token, I wouldn't want the eeriness of Innistrad to be present in Battlebond.
Yes some of the art is cartoony but that really is not a bad thing, especially in a supplementary product no one is forcing anyone else to buy or play with.

Exactly. I don’t like Innistrad really, but that just means it’s not for me. Nothing wrong with that. A game like Magic doesn’t need to have every plane be loved by every person, it’s just not realistic.

I agree, it's better to have sets and art that are beloved by some and hated by others than having sets and art which everyone just feels "meh" about. Tons of people love original adventure world Zendikar and hate the nearly destroyed Eldrazi world it became from Rise of the Eldrazi onwards, yet I feel exactly the opposite way and I'm not looking forward to getting back to a restored Zendikar. I still wouldn't complain about Wizards doing so, instead trying to find things in the set that might appeal to me (there are in my experience always at least one or two aspects that intrigue me in a set). Or as others have suggested, don't buy the cards. That also works. People just shouldn't try to frame their opinions as being objectively true for everyone, since they can't possibly be in regards to such a subjective matter.
Funny, so many posters here are quick to play devil's advocate here.
I agree with you, the art feels like it was stolen from a 90's Saturday morning cartoon. Guess this is amateur hour.
Wonder why they accepted this art direction? Best to look at it at other angles; such as target demographic. They (WotC art team) might be gunning for the matured millennial group, ages 16 to late 20's that grew up on Pokemon before coming to a more mature game.
Another thought was that this might be an experiment to tackle something lighter, reading just these comments. If this is true, then any praise given is just negative reinforcement. True, as others have pointed out, only 15% of the set has been previewed, but I doubt the style will change much. What company puts out the mediocre art to lure in the "oohs" & "ahhs." A lot of thought goes into what to show off first. This might be the better artwork... we might get Avant Garde scribbles or an attempt to reignite the Dadaist movement... which would really just look like a "movement" of color, lol.
Guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed & hope this is just a cruel joke, followed w/ a "just kidding" & PRESTO CHANGE-O, the better art appears. Only in dreams...

Blasphemy, people dislike the art direction of Dominaria?!? Where are these people, so I can politely tell them how wrong they are.
In other news, the art style is very reminiscent of Battle for Zendikar block to me. Which it being similar is not a good thing as I consider it one of BFZ’s larger weaknesses.

I mean, I don't know that I "dislike" it, but I didn't find Dominaria's all that interesting. It's generic fantasy the plane though so that's to be expected. I think with that in mind it's fine I suppose, but I prefer almost every other plane to it. New Phyrexia and some other places (Grixis comes to mind) are about the only places I actively dislike though.
People complain that Magic is becomming too cartoony? I miss the days where some of the cards just had some ]Foglio art. I like some diversity in styles and some out-there art. I don't want everything to look brown and realistic.
Arkham, the 1920's. Investigators battle horrors from beyond time and space, risking life and sanity while conspiracies of cultists and malign servitors seek gateways for their outer gods to return...
Soon, the stars will be right! Great Cthulhu shall rise!

Of course, I also have a Commander deck in which all of the nonlands except the commander (plus two of the lands) are illustrated by either Phil or Kaja Foglio.
vs.
I really dislike most of the Battlebond art spoiled so far. Look at Pir's Whim, Rushblade Commander, Fan Favorite, Proud Mentor, and Impetuous Protege. They all feel ...off. Too soft, a little derpy, and they stylistically clash with reprint cards.

As far as the set goes it seems fine to me. Given the much heavier tone for Conspiracy this feels like a nice contrast.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
