Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx had me thinking. If I had a devotion of 5 so I used its second mana ability, could an opponent respond by using an instant to kill a creature, and therefore lessen my devotion? e.g. I am expecting to get 5 mana but after a Leatherback Baloth gets destroyed I actually get 2 when the stack resolves.
I just assumed this was possible until I noticed one of the rulings: The second ability is a mana ability. It doesn’t use the stack and can’t be responded to.
If you can use an instant to lessen devotion, what does that ruling mean?
I guess the same question could be had for the gods, if, say, Keranos, God of Storms declared an attack, could the opponent use an instant to kill a permanent, reduce devotion and therefore convert Keranos back to an enchantment only?
This belongs in the rules forum, but mana abilities cannot be responded to. By the time you decide you're going to use Nykthos to generate mana no one can do anything to try and lower your devotion. In contrast, Keranos constantly checks your devotion to see if he is a creature or not, so removal can be used to lower your devotion at various appropriate times.

Woah I was certain I did post it in the rules forum.
Think this is the problem of having multiple windows open...
