i keep asking myself what i should buy. and what i am looking for is the best set to buy as someone who wants to use the cards for constructed play without doing the actual inteligent thing of just buying singles. i enjoy being challenged to build the best possible deck with a limited but not too limited pooll.
also having the time to actually think up this crazy ideas that may sometimes work.
now i emmediatly said to myself when i saw ixalan: well a set that is 100% tribal is not exactly mind stimulating and leaves little options for me to build crazy decks with. as results i didn't buy jack from it.
so i started mtg with a m14 core set and am wondering if core sets are my way to go. or do you guys think dominaria will still have some good tricks up its sleeve? is the difference between core sets and the now 1 block normal sets that core sets allow for more kinds of weird decks while normal sets focus on some set mechanics?
what would you say? core set or dominaria?
also what about slivers?
i just really... really like slivers... i just never had the chance to build a sliver deck yet... i have a diffusion sliver a trampler and a +1+1 sliver up to now also a +2+0 and a +0+1 sliver and a first strike sliver and a manaweft sliver... and maybe a vigilance sliver... and a sliver construct?
anyways not enough slivers... mostly not enough power/toughness boosters... okay getting off track now...
if you're looking for diverse supplements and steroids to beef up your brews core sets are great! how ever coresets always play better with other sets and not as a main if i'm correct Theros black and RTR was out at the same time as m14 so they'll enjoy the toys in those. If you're looking for slivers i would expect the new dominaria set to have some because fans like em and this is a fan celebration set. M14 will be great to buy if you have other cards to build around but i don't recommend it if you're looking for a base
We will not know until M19 comes out this summer. MaRo said that the Core Sets are going to be tailored more heavily towards being an entry point for new players, so who know how much that will affect the cards within the set.
man like 3-4 months until m19... it cannot happen fast enough... sadly for me im in one of those parts of my life time passes REALLY slowly...
so even return to dom is too for for me

Translation: "We still arent smart enough to understand what a core set should be used for"
Generally the powerlevel of cards in the core sets is a little lower than normal standard sets. If previous core sets are an example, there will be some bombs for constructed play but the majority will be geared towards being simple to understand so that newer players can get stuck in easily. Having said this, Origins was awesome to play sealed with so if they can do follow that example I'll be happy

EDH BRGKresh the BloodbraidedBRG, A box of lands and ideas.
Modern: RG Titanshift. A deck made of cards too stupid for EDH.
Retired: Lots. More than I feel you should suffer through or I should type out.

I am not sure if intelligence is the issue. I think it is a real lack of willingness to commit to any idea, as it might disenfranchise some players or limit sales.

That was what they were before the M* series. (M10, M11, M12...) They didn't have original cards or block mechanics.
Core Sets are definitely a place where NWO rules should be in full force. Maybe even to some extent at uncommon. You could probably put in legendary creatures and maybe even planeswalkers, since they're at the highest rarities anyway. But the cards themselves should mostly be simple staples. Maybe nerfed versions of staples (e.g., Shock or Searing Spear rather than Lightning Bolt) or colorshifted to the modern color pie. For power cards, they should be in the vein (pardon the pun) of Vampire Nighthawk: Just a creature with good stats and keywords.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

On phasing:
If they make this set on par with dominaria revist cards these will be fine
Even disregarding monetary values, I would buy sealed products from any large expansion before I'd buy M14, with the sole exception of BFZ.
Edit: M11 and M12 were fine. Anything newer is just chaff.
