Can you <realistically> play competitive magic by renting only: and is it worth the premium you pay?
Recently I started experimenting with an Online MTGO rental service... and I must confess I am hooked. For 60$ per month I can rent ANY modern deck or standard deck online. Although I can't keep the decks overnight... I can swap between cards and decks as needed.
This actually get's me excited to play MTGO again as I can actually utilize it as a competitive testing client.
The biggest challenge: my collection in real life is not as fluid. If I decide (through online testing) to play a different deck, I would have to rent anyways or borrow the cards.
As a result I started thinking - would it make more sense <as a competitive magic player> to sell my entire collection and just rent the deck that I want to play for any given tournament?
Going to a rental-only philosophy could cost as much as $200 per month in rentals alone (MTGO rental + 2-3 paper decks). Though the average cost would probably be 100. (MTGO + one deck for whatever the GP format/PPTQ format is for that month).
Is that worth it to be able to always play with the "best deck"?

What is the MTGO rental service? If this is offered by wizards for $X a month for unlimited copys of all cards in MTGO (no redemption oddvously)for as long as you pay the monthy fee. I would say GO for it! If this is offered by players/3ed parties that a) might not have the cards you need or b) opens both you and then up to HUGE risk of thift/selling cards to other people/havign you account stolen from. HELL NO.

I think the rental service is a great way to go assuming that it actually works. One of the big barriers I end up having more than anything is the entire process of getting the deck together along with sideboard before going to an event. Rental services would basically shortcut the preparation process and potentially make it much easier to play the game. I'd imagine the downside is that ultimately the decks for rent will be based on decklists found online, so it's basically playing a net deck. That can be a good or bad thing depending on the meta one is playing in.

I think the biggest barrier is cost.
Let’s assume you go full throttle and spend 100$ per month on deck rentals. In a year that’s $1,200. In three years you could buy pretty much any modern/legacy deck.
Deck renting will always cost more money in the long term because it’s a service (not an investment). But the benefit is you can play with anything you want.
Yes. They also have paper rentals (As well as spare deck). It does not violate any MTGO agreement because you actually physically own the cards on your own account until you return them.

I'd imagine that for a large event, many people will be trying to rent cards/deck.

Yea that’s not an issue from my experience.

Selling some cards I don't want.
Generally less than tcg mid.

If it's not your account, then maybe the risk to you is low if it's pay per month.
Correct me if I am wrong, I'm just curious.
