Over the past year, Wizards of the Coast has been working to streamline legacy systems used in recording organized play participation. As part of this effort, we will be decommissioning some back-end systems on March 21, 2017.
...
The change will primarily affect players who do not know their DCI number, but may want to use their number to participate in sanctioned Magic events, or who may want to access their play history information in the future. In particular, if you plan to attend a Grand Prix or other premier-level event, be sure to have your DCI number memorized, written down, or otherwise handy when you sign up. After March 21, you will not be able to show up at a premier event and ask them to look up your DCI number. They simply will not be able to.
Here's what someone told me and it is an awesome technique. Make a contact in your mobile phone like "DCI Num" and make the phone number your DCI number. Easy button.
I can't really understand what a problem this might be. Is it really that difficult to write down your DCI number in your phone, as a contact, have a photo of it or whatever?

Before the glory of Yawgmoth, yes, even this makes sense.

That's stupid. The number of players at the FNM that don't know there dci number is very high. If those numbers can't be looked up then it will waste a lot of time. It may drive local store attendance even lower.
I think the important bit of the statement you quoted is "...premier event...", to reduce the management times during great events like PTQ, GP and so on, not FNM

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again"
I don't think this is localized to premiere events. I think they just mentioned those as an example. My LGS sent this note to all of us with a note saying that after the 21st, they would not be able to look up our DCI for FNM, prereleases, etc.
Once again magic tries to fix electronic things that aren't broken and makes a worse experience for everyone. At least they are consistent.
Yeah, I have to admit that this is baffling. I can't imagine any of my customers migrating systems this way where the old tech is literally completely unavailable before the new system was already up and running in at least a sampled production environment.
I think they need to give this announcement more time to reach the public, perhaps an entire month before it goes into effect. As long as the stores really get the word out there about this change, the people who don't need a handicapped level of adulting guidance should be able to record their DCI to make a lot of people's day easier, or get to more pressing issues.
so basically what they're saying is that at a time when attendance is low, they're going to make an unnecessary change to in essence forces people who don't/can't remember their dci numbers to create new accounts to artificially inflate the number of the people playing the game by being able to say 'hey look at all these new accounts!'
i dunno, thats my first impression take away from this. it just creates a slew of new duplicate accounts by which to claim growth
Yeah, it must be difficult for some of the newer players, but mine's 4 digits and easy to remember as well.

Cards are game pieces, and should be treated as such, easily replaceable.
Cards are not money, investments, or a retirement fund, and should never have been treated as such.
Wizards made a mistake caving to speculators once, and we still pay for that mistake 2 decades later.
"Entitled:" the entire ad hominem fallacy condensed into a single word. It doesn't strengthen your argument to attack motivations, it just makes you look like you don't understand the argument.

I think this impacts every sanctioned event.

Wizards' tactic here boggles the mind.
