A lot of people sort their cards by set (and then alphabetical/collector number or whatever). That makes sense and it makes finding the cards you want for a deck pretty easy.
My question comes about cards that are not strictly part of a set. How do you organize cards that aren't part of a normal set? For example, cards that come in the Modern Event deck or in a Duel deck (they all have their specific symbol). I could make a section for each of them, but it seems silly to have a card that was original in Theros stuck in that weird section just because of the expansion symbol.
I suspect there isn't one best way to do this, but I'm curious how other people are handling that.
I don't have many of these types of cards but I've got anthologies, chronicles, the un sets, conspiracy and such like that which aren't really part of a block grouped together. The volume fits nicely in with the box I have for the recent core sets.
Now of course I've got it all cataloged so if I'm looking for something that's in an event deck or duel deck that was originally in a Theros set it'll show the event or duel deck expansion and I know it's in that recent core set box in the area for those types of cards.
Now, I do have a problem of how do you order such sets within the box. It's not a terrible issue for me at the moment as I probably have fewer than 700 cards in this category. So what does it matter if anthologies is before or after chronicles or where unglued is in relation to unhinged. But with the blocks you can order the sets more or less by when they were released, cold snap being an odd one if you order them by block structure. But not buying a lot of these types of products I'm not sure "release date" is the best order.
I consider those their own sets and organize those accordingly. That is to say, a Duel deck has a precise number of cards - I'd keep all the cards from a duel deck in its own section. So if I want to find a specific version of a card from a specific set, I just go to the set to find it.
I organize all the supplementary products with subcategories. Duel decks are all in one (this is where I would put the modern event deck), and then commander products are all in another. I don't sort these by color like I would normally do, since I go out of my way to not have a large quantity of them. Stuff like conspiracy is sorted as normal, because it is actually its own set with randomized sealed product.
That is totally up to you. You are the one who will have to find the cards later, after all. There is no objectively best way to organize your collection. One person's best system is another person's nightmare. Find the way, that serves you the best.
