Pretty insane, but glad justice was served. Congrats to Ray Perez, an awesome guy, well deserved.

I think WotC, and likely Helene specifically, has shown tremendous leadership recently. I'm also glad to see they reached the right result re: the pass-down of the invite to Ray.
Hi-Larious. So much for the people calling this a witch hunt. I am disappointed, but not surprised, that so many have been caught cheating recently. With so many matches going on, and so many not being on camera, it's a low risk situation so if you don't have moral qualms about it cheating is often the right "value" choice, especially in the short term. I bet this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Like PSulli said recently, if these people had shown restraint and only cheated off camera, would they have ever been caught?

Pretty sure it starts out like that but after repetitive wins using the technique the urge to do it just one more time takes over, camera or not.
At this rate, we can start up non-sanctioned cheaters only events and have enough big-name talent to attract viewers.

Honestly I'm pretty disappointed with this. I wanted to believe he wasn't cheating and was just shuffling poorly. Platinum, Rookie of the Year, near top of the SCG Leaderboard. He is the most successful cheater to be banned in a long time, and you don't do as well as he was doing unless you're also really good at the game.
I love that all the people who were defending cheaters' rights in the other thread are wrong.
To be fair, the DCI has a lot of footage that we don't. In the vast majority of footage we had on Jared we can't see his eyes and that's very important. They should have access to more footage beyond simply what was aired.
They should have arrested him, 46 month ban? please... thats a joke. He should be in jail right now with other criminals. You cheat at gambling people break your legs, MTG should be no different.

For what? Cheating at MTG does not break any laws.
The ban is sufficient enough.

He didnt break any laws but he did get prizes from many events that he won by cheating, he might get striped from his title but the money/product is long gone, he should be obliged to give it back or fine him for that amount.

The thing with money/product is that it doesnt change the point that this is a game.
If we would play for 10-million $ price pool, people would be even more opting for blood, as money changes everything right ?
Cheater or not, if you paid a price you wasted your opportunity to identify a cheater, you cant come back and want your stuff back later on, especially with high money rewards this would potentially ruin a life (spend that money ? good luck paying 10 years of magic money back !).
Its a game and while people have any right to dislike a cheater, in no way should someone be seriously injured from it, not the cheater and not the cheated people, as for that, this is a game.

What we seriously need is education.
People should know how to properly shuffle and especially judges should be educated where to look more closely, especially on higher tables, magic rules are one thing, but cheating is a threat for tournament integrity that is quite important.
I love that all the people who were defending cheaters' rights in the other thread are wrong.
You do know the difference between actually defending the rights of cheaters, and defending the rights of those accused to a fair punishment after evidence is presented, right?
You do know the difference between actually defending cheaters, and being skeptical legitimately, a position that often gets changed when evidence is presented, right?
This attitude is one of the problems with issues like this, the absolute "if you don't view X you must feel Y" type of attacks which, besides being logically erroneous, just ... don;t help us anywhere so far as the real issue of cheating.

While I am not in a hurry to start awarding prison sentences, I'm not sure this is true.
Winning any contest with a monetary award by means of cheating is fraud. The reason I say "I'm not sure" is that I can't actually find the applicable law against fraud, but fraud is definitely something that people pay fines and go to jail for. If you go to a casino and cheat at poker and win some money and are caught, it's not just "you're banned from the casino".

If you're caught cheating in a casino they'll go after you in civil court. Magic however isn't gambling, it intentionally makes a few distinctions in that regard. Part of that is that they can't go after you for losses if prize money has already been awarded because it's not classified as a loss.
Does not deny improper shuffling, just denies knowing that there was anything wrong with the way he was shuffling. As sensible a response as I could come up with.
