Does anybody have any experience mailing cards to her to sign? Her personal website says she does so, but has anyone actually gone through with it? If so, how much did you tip/how did you send the cards/how long did it take?
Terese Nielsen is a Gen Con 2014 Artist Guest Of Honor and will be signing a lot at the convention. Do you have any friends going to GenCon this August?
I sent her some cards. I included a starbucks card as I hear she likes a nice cup of coffee. Got my cards back in around 2 weeks or so, but YMMV on that.

I have done so. I sent her about 20 cards, and tipped $5. It took a couple months to get back, but she emailed me a couple times in the interim. About average time for an artist signing.
She does like coffee, so Sparki probably wins with the Starbucks card.

She altered a Force of Will for me about 10 years ago. I recently reached out to her to check on doing another and she's charging $500 now. Will she sign for free though?

$500 to alter ONE card?! Wow.
That seems somewhat excessive to say the least.
At what point in time did she transform into archdemon of greed?
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.

Not necessarily greed. For one thing, you don't know her financial situation. For another thing, you don't know how many requests she gets for this stuff. If she's getting hundreds of requests (and remember, she's one of the most popular artists for the most popular TCG), she's not going to have time to do all of them, so a reasonable way to limit that is to only do them for a significant fee.
Also, if we're talking about an actual hand-painted alter, that's a not insignificant amount of work. You're not getting that for free. There are alterists who will do full alters for much less than $500, but it makes sense that you'd have to pay a premium to get it done by Terese Nielsen.
I sent in 4 FoW, 8 RiP (4 Foil), and a few other foils of her cards and got them all back on Friday signed and in good shape. It was a super easy process and could not be happier about the signatures. I think they really make the card pop. If anyone is interested in sending things I would say go for it. I sent her a $10 dollar tip along with return postage money as a thank you.
