Hello,
I just finished opening a 36 booster box of journey to nyx (in french if that matters).
I got a total of 3 mythics ( Worst Fears ,Pharika and Keranos ) and a big total of 10 prerelease promos ( two of each).
Is it just me having bad luck or is it a pattern?
The pre-release prize pack were the same, few mythics and many prerelease promos...
This is pretty normal from the data my team and I have gathered over the years. Promo rares are printed at a much higher rarity (our speculation) than things like S. Revelation. There has never been a set where I open the most expensive mythic more than once or twice (often zero).
No, I meant which ever Mythic stinks (RTR's Hellkite for example) my local store sells hundreds of boxes and tracks rarity with the buyers and we see that mythics that we know will suck are 3/4 times more common than Planeswalker mythics.

Your store records the rares opened in every single pack they sell to the general public?

I don't believe you (or the people who told you that at least). Tracking what's opened already seems suspect, but then finding that something printed on the same exact sheet as the chase Mythics is 3-4 times more common seems pretty outlandish. I guess since most cards at most rarities are trash that might be part of how you got that. Most likely it's because playable 4-of Mythics require 9-10 boxes of product per playlet and it takes just 1 box to get all the crappy RTR Hellkites you and all your friends need (1).

I don't blame you for not believing me. I wouldn't either if I wasn't directly connected to the data for the last 6 years and thousands of cases worth of information we've collected.

The distribution of Mythics and Rares is not random. These things can be mapped. If certain Mythics appeared more often than others, the mappers would know and it would have been disclosed by now.
I have been involved in opening cases at a local game shop for each of the last three sets. Even over 70 boxes, the count of each Mythic is not equal, but they are within expectations and it has not been the case that chase Mythics have appeared less often than others.

"Because we cannot prevent draws in paper Magic we allow IDs. If we could prevent draws we would not have IDs in paper Magic. " Scott Larabee.
Cracked a box today for the fun of it. 8 rares I opened twice, 3 of them "Dictates." Of the good stuff, 3 gods & Mana Confluence.
It may be a small set but there's so much good stuff in it!
Every set yields at least one thread in Magic General where someone gets a lesson on statistics.
Your box sucked. WotC's randomization doesn't.
Open 20 boxes and you'll get 1-2 more that are equally bad and 2-3 that are great.
This. So many times this.
People only remember random events they consider memorable. And if a set has 3 great mythics and 12 meh ones, it's much more common to get 10 rubbish ones in a row than it is to get 5 great ones in a row.

I thought boxes were pretty much unmappable (sooooooo, not a word) in recent sets.
UA, the only way what you claim could be true is if they just threw away some of the chase mythics and rares. Otherwise it is literally impossible. MaRo himself has directly answered this question many times by saying that no rare/mythic is more rare than any other (baring special printings and such). One of the commons is more rare than the rest, but not any other rarity. MaRo may obfuscate to withhold time sensitive information, but I am very certain he would not directly lie about something like that. The damage that would be done to the game's reputation would be much too costly.
My buddies and I drafted 2 JOU boxes last weekend - one was really good while the other was not as good.
Here's the breakdown:
Good box:
Mythics:
2x Prophetic Flamespeaker
1x Keranos, God of the Storms
1x Iroas, God of Victory
1x Pharika, God of Affliction
Notable Rares:
2x Mana Confluence
1x Deicide
1x Temple of Malady
1x Temple of Epiphany
1x Master of Feasts
1x Eidolon of Great Revels
1x Hero's Bane (Foil Rare)
Bad Box:
Mythics:
1x Athreos, God of Passage
1x Prophetic Flamespeaker
1x Pharika, God of Affliction
Notable Rares:
1x Mana Confluence
2x Battlefield Thaumatage
1x Dictate of Erebos
1x Dictate of Kruphix (Foil Rare)
On the 2nd box, we got some rares that duplicated (the blue PR card, the red PR card and the Centaur lord I think)
Take note that we only got 1 Banishing Light and only 2 Brain Maggots out of the two boxes we opened (they seem to be rarer than usual rares lol).
There was chatter among people here that if you open a Mana Confluence, chances are, you'll get pretty good stuff in your box. I guess our second box proved this theory wrong
It's not bad luck, most of the cards in the set are just intentionally designed crappily either for limited (crappy promos) or overcosted for EDH (dictates, random effect rares, junk artifacts) Imagine instead of Generic heroic flier #4 or overcosted dragon #9, you got blade splicer or Chandra's Phoenix, then it wouldn't feel so bad.

I agree with most of this post, but costing the Dictates lower would be *absurd*. Flash makes them too potent at lower costs.
One thing I've noticed, well at least from experience, with the boxes in the THeros block is that you usually get multiples of the Promo Cards - PR and Release party (etc. Abhorrent Overlord, Arbiter of the Ideal and even Tromokratis!)
I mean, a lot of people have them because of the PRs plus they are the rares that are part of the Intro Pack! It's not like we have a shortage of these cards lol
