I would guess that Los Angeles has a lot of tournaments, but I honestly don't know about the Midwest or the East coast. I have only visited in the past for non-Magic related reasons. I would like to point out that Indianapolis has the SCG Open with the largest attendance usually and has the Invitational.
Why do you ask? (picking a place to move to? :p)

I'm no expert on the topic, but I've thought about it a lot and this is what I've come up with:
In North America, Magic is most popular on the East Coast, particularly the colder areas. Where I am from in New England, there are very few towns too small to have a standard FNM. Also, I've heard that most of the Vintage old fogey's live in the area between Boston, upstate New York, and Philadelphia.
I believe California has a lot of players due to sheer volume of population, but the weather and attitude in California enables people to do plenty of other things besides Magic. This might also apply to Florida. They might have large, centralized tournaments given the centralized nature of the states, but they might have fewer small-scale operations.
Other places are the ones where you hear stories from people who have to drive two hours to play standard. That's laughable in my area, I just have to walk five minutes or go to an even bigger tournament a half-hour away.

Excuse me sir, I'd like to have a word with you ;)...
California (Orange County mostly), used to be, and still is, the center for Magic is the South West. It was in Costa Mesa, CA where Scott Larribee got his start w/ his gaming shop, South Coast Gaming Associated. Scott is now THE head of all tournaments that WotC has (Grand Prix, Worlds, etc...).
In Garden Grove, my old teacher, Alan Emrich worked at a store called Brookhurst Hobbies. He was a friend of Richard Garfield at the time and helped save Magic from it's utter collapse w/ Garfield's idea of changing the cards' backs for Arabian Nights. Mr. Emrich was one of the individuals who convinced Richard Garfield that it was a bad idea. I'd like to credit my old teacher for saving the game.
Back in 1993/94 when I began playing, there was already a following at my school, of about 15-17 players.
As it stands, in pretty much every city on Orange County, one can find a LGS that sells either Magic singles, or at least packs. That is well over 20 LGS's in one given county.
With an obvious bias I'm curious to ask if anyone knows the number of tournaments in Seattle and then in Vancouver Canada. I feel as though Seattle is up there probably not the most but definitely notable being that we host SCG Opens, GP's and Pro Tours quite frequently.
The greater DC area has quite a few sanctioned events. Within a ~2 hour driving radius, you've got Baltimore, Richmond, and Roanoake (home of SCG). Baltimore, Richmond, and DC all get GPs and at least one SCG Open a year. I think Baltimore had two SCG Opens last year. There's also a fairly large number of game stores running FNMs, Legacy tournaments, Modern tournaments, SCG IQs, PTQs, and other such events on a regular basis.
New York would probably be my guess for most tournaments though, just given how many people live there.

Twin Cities is pretty good for magic. Two large metropolitan areas and their surrounding suburbs all within 30-60 minutes depending on where you live. You can play legacy three nights in a row so that says something about the area I think.

The Tristate area is probably the answer. Encompassing upstate New York, New Jersey and down to Philadelphia. You're never more than an hour from a Competitive REL event on a Saturday and there are tons of lower level events.
My friend who moved to Cali has told me how far he has to travel for events and how they are less often.

Actually ya, I have a good combination of free time and savings and thinking about going somewhere and playing a lot of magic for a while. Sounds crazy to some people, but I just got back into the game after 10 years or so and always enjoyed playing when I was younger, just didn't have the finances or flexibility back then.
I guess it's a healthier extended break from the alternative (traveling/living in foreign countries and binge drinking)
If you live near the Boston they have plenty of LGS around the area but if you the Grand Prix type of person then it's not so good as the only other state with a GP is New York.
Chicago has a lot of tournaments. There's at least one big tournament every weekend, with a lot of stores running smaller tournaments at the same time. I think we get a yearly GP now, or at least it's kind of seeming like it. Pastimes is one of the largest gaming stores in the country, hosting GPs in other states as well as the TCG championship.
I couldn't verify if we have the most tournaments, though. I would assume it being either Los Angeles or more likely New York.
San jose is home to channel fireball. There are events every day and we have other LGS here too who also do magic draft or constructed every day. All of them log you in with your name and/or dci # . They are all 'sanctioned events'.
I would say there are 40-50 events per week here

That sounds legit. I think I'll make my way over there and check it out for a while, can't hurt with GP being right there in Sacramento this weekend. Just need to find a place to rent for a while.
Somewhere in California?
Maybe it's an area in the East Coast? Star City Games?
Florida?
Texas?
