There were a lot of good control finishers in zendikar and the second mirrodin block that were overshadowed by Titans and Wurmcoil Engine, and Jace 2. The big one I remember was Deathless Angel. If she were in a different standard, she would have been pretty good.
Also, while I am aware that Reanimation decks existed in Invasion/Odyssey standard, (Life/Death and Entomb in consecutive sets?!?) I never saw anyone playing it. This was a metagame thing, I think, since Invasion had a ton of good bounce effects and Odyssey block was full of graveyard hate.
One thing that will always stay with me is that back in the early fall of 2001, every supremely skilled player would fly off into Delphic oracle-like ecstatic throes at the mention of Holistic Wisdom. Independently of each other; separated by time and space. I'll never be able to dump from my memory the way their eyes would glaze over in way that seemed nothing less than lustful, but simply couldn't be. And uncannily, as I mentioned, it was a mass reaction lacking relation. So weird.
In short: Holistic Wisdom - it mildly traumatized me yet went nowhere.

Ya, but it did see play in odyssey/onslaught standard.
Precursor Golem:
seemed like a great anti-aggro card that would also cause problems for control. It saw some play in RUG decks at the end of Jace's standard run. It passed Jace test, attacked through four of the Titans, and could be run in any manabase. The problem was Delver of Secrets caused the card to flatline completely after that brief stint in summer '12. It could no longer be used as a blocker because Delver and Traft token flew over it, and Vapor Snag was pretty much the worst card that could possibly be printed against it. I'm hoping it gets reprinted. Even though creatures have gotten 2x as good since then, it can still fight with the best of them, IMO.
Hate to show my age again but Shadowmage Infiltrator was just outclassed (at the time) by Psychatog. Finkel really should have seen more play.
I didn't play that far back, but yeah, that was actually the first card I was gonna say. Ever since I first saw the card, I assumed that it saw a solid bit of play. I never really understood why it didn't. Then I read Psychatog. Re-read it and read Upheaval...bleh. :/
Finkel was very good in UB Mannequin many years later as a Timeshifted card from Time Spiral. I remember this being my favorite creature in the deck (yes, over Mulldrifter and Shriekmaw).
It's nice to see he saw some love at some point in his lifespan.
Deathrite Shaman. Although the card's standard life isn't over, it's doubtful that it will see any sort of significant play in standard due to the lack of fetchlands.
Yeah, of all the most powerful cards ever printed, this one...Deathrite just seems next to no play in Standard. It just...doesn't DO anything here. :/
Molten tail Masticore seemed good but never really got there. Fauna Shaman also had some love but I think it should've been way bigger.
I never understood why that card didn't see as much crazy play as it should have. Powerful ramp spells + Vengevine + Avenger of Zendikar + PrimeTime...really surprised it didn't show up more often.
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
Isn't Spiritmonger the classic example of this? Guy was OP on paper (for the time) and made it into zero decks. I'd go so far as to say that, given their raw power in a vaccuum, Spiritmonger and Phyrexian Obliterator are the only cards to consider for most unfortunately overlooked of Standard.

I could swear Spiritmonger was run in at least one deck that did pretty well at the time. But then again i was just getting into the game and i didn't pay much attention to that at the time.

One of the newer cards, yet one of my favorites as it can duplicate just about any other card.... And I haven't seen many people run artifact removal or find the card overly threatening to get rid of it.... Till they see a Kalonian Hydra get fat! For example....lol
Finkel's cards also did great in the Timespiral Block getting two spots in the top 8 GP San Francisco in 2007.
I often think about how many flavorful and just generally nice cards their was from Scars block that just never saw the light of day because of them darn swords and wurmcoil engines making them all irrelevant.
The best black creature in the game. Made zero impact in standard.
This is an untruth. While not the defining card of the format, Confidant was played in Dark Zoo and R/B Suicide Aggro and occasionally could be found in fringe decks like Project X and TarmoRack towards the end of Ravnica's time in Standard.

At least in my neck of the woods, this was a staple in the Mirari's Wake decks of the time.

Spiritmonger and Terminate were the basis for splashing black in the Dark Fires decks. Also, he was a staple in The Rock. Saw plenty of play, but is just way outclassed these days.
I always loved venser sojourner. great plus, ok minus, and probably the best ultimate after JTMS.
He saw a solid amount of play. Not sure how much at the top tables, but he was definitely a fairly popular card for its time. Before Caw-Blade was fully established and even before Caw-Go was fully established, Venser was one of the flagship cards in U/W control lists. Sorta. It was pretty split on how "viable" he was, but there were plenty of people who played the deck, myself included.
Easily one of my favorite planeswalkers of all time. Had a lot of fun with him. Though he got me into time SO much because of how durdly he was.

As much as I'm against the OTT view that this card is going to solo tournaments, cure cancer and make Susan Boyle attractive I'm not really a fan of the opposing camp who think it slaughters puppies and sired Justin Bieber.
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
