If you're interested in trying to take commissions, I'd suggest you check out our Artwork forum. Play mats, card alters and so forth and information on taking commissions is located there.
I am interested in doing commissions, but I'm more wondering if there is a need or even a want of that kind of thing? Sorry if I'm breaking forum rules or something XP

Oh, no no. As long as you aren't soliciting for commissions here at any point, you're fine - I was just pointing you that way for if you decide to do so.
Custom playmats is a big thing and definitely worth getting good at. Most players want a way to stand out and be unique, and outside of "pimping" their decks out, custom Playmats are the best way of doing so.
ok. On that thread of thought, what makes a mat "good" over another? Is it merely artist's skill, or are there any other, more controllable factors that can be adressed?
I've commissioned the art for my Youtube Channel Playmat and I know of at least two other people in that community that have done so as well.
As far as what makes a mat good, I would say that skill and style are the main things people look for. Without seeing any of your art, I can't really say anything other than that.

Playmats are a strange medium. Have you tried drawing on one before? The colors tend to bleed and you have to use multiple layers of ink.
Players like it when the blending is done well and the colors pop. Copics are usually the marker of choice.
how many of you either a) own a custom, hand drawn playmat or b) would be interested in one?
I'd like to start making them, and I am for another card game, but I'm not sure if the magic community would be at all interested in that.
