I think I need to listen to that whole soundtrack again, now.
That said, it wasn't until I came back to the game about 18 months ago that I found out that it was possible to do things like tapping to the left or playing lands in front. It was just that I'd had no contact with any such deviation from what I'd learned. I still (and likely always will) tap that way, but I no longer see it as all that unusual.
I tap in whatever direction i'm feeling at the moment, It is usually a mix of 90%left, 90% right, 45% left, and 45% right, just whatever as long as they know.
If I tap lands they go right.
I tap creatures to the left when they attack.
If I use an ability on a creature or artifact that requires a tap, I tap right.
How did this poll generate five pages of responses? I'm amused that it's that big of a deal to a lot of you. I'm a bit OCD myself, but I can't make myself care which way my opponent taps his cards. Besides, tapping to the right, would actually be tapping to the left from the perspective of my opponent sitting across from me!
I will agree though, diagonal taps irk me, as do stacked lands. But which direction you tap? Why on earth should I care? Just do what's natural for you.
I'm right handed but, I usually have my hand in my right so I end up tapping with my left. I turn it to the right though, that's the way the symbol is facing.

The picture clearly tells you to tap right. Also, every single computerized Magic game (Duel of the Planeswalkers, MTGO, Cockatrice, etc) taps to the right. Clearly, they're meant to be tapped to the right.
But I would never raise a fuss about it if my opponent tapped the other way.

Funny!
No one has made a big deal out of it as far as I can tell. 95%+ of the posts in this thread are just random users saying they tap whatever way without really discussing or seeming to care.

Diagonal taps could be annoying. But stacking lands is more than just annoying.
Stacking lands is an attempt to cheat. Ask your opponent to stop stacking his lands. If he still stacks his lands anyway, call a judge.
I don't care which way people tap. But if someone invented some rule about how you're supposed to tap to the left, I'd definitely make fun of him. I mean, the cards have a little picture describing how to tap to the right (and then there's the untap symbol...).

I used to tap 45 degrees to the right, as seen in the tap symbol of a revised Birds of Paradise. I did this all the way to college where people decided it was too difficult to see what was tapped and what wasn't, so now I tap the full 90 degrees, to the right of course.
I played a lot of tennis in high school. Sometimes you play against someone who's left-handed. It's weird. Everything for them is "backwards" to you. It's just their nature. To each his own, but if you don't want to get called out on it, turn your cards right.
I was taught to tap to the right, but at some point I decided to tap to the left instead to go against the flow Yeah, us Magic players are such nerds.
I might do a combination though. Tap lands to the right and creatures to the left, for example. I'm actually not completely sure, I don't play too close attention to this stuff.
Also if I tap all my lands, I kinda stack 'em all (but in a way that you can see exactly how many there are) and tap them just slightly.
I'm a lefty, I play and tap everything right-handed. I turn 90 degrees clockwise unless the creature has vigilance, in which case I rotate 45 degrees to signify the attack, then rotate back after the phase is complete. I have never had a complaint, even when playing against judges.
I tap both ways, although I tend to tap to the right. I just make sure all my tapped lands match at the same time, and if they don't I fix it so they're all facing the right way.
There is no correct way, I just care that you can tell the lands are tapped.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
If I remember right for a brief period of time the rule books called for a diagonal tapping. I think it was 4th edition, when they changed the tap symbol.
The tap symbol shows it to the right. So technically speaking, if you're not doing it that way, you are doing it incorrectly.
But its just a game. hell i saw someone use counters for their tapped lands. I guess it helps him. Thought it was alot more work and more difficult to see
