Out of curiosity, is there any sort of briefcase type container that's good for holding a subset of a collection that's used to actually play? As in, I'd put a few decks in it, and then have room to put the cards that I use from time to time in there as well.
I ask because I'm not a really big fan of either the binder or the box solution. I feel that binders are too much work, but my collection is no where near big enough to justify a lot of the boxes online (It's only maybe 500 cards tops at this point, I played very very little back in the Kamigawa set, and just got back in). Plus, I think a briefcase type container would be ideal for portability's sake, all the ones I've seen so far just have slots for deckboxes to go into, which is a start, but I wonder if theres anything that is close to what I'm looking for.

6 five row boxes for each color and then gold/artifact/nonbasicland, and then sort out every card I might actually want to play some day into 2 four row boxes, one row for each color and then a row for gold, artifact, and nonbasics, and slowly try to put them in binders by card/what it does so I can build decks more easily.

That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating. Take it back!
I've mine pretty simple. I sort the cards by rarity then by set and then by the card number at the bottom. I've only started in Zendikar, so it was easy to start doing this right away.
A pile of cards for each colour, as well as nonbasic lands, colorless (artifacts+eldrazi), multicolor and Basic lands of each type, sometimes cards may be sorted into type. My rares can usually fit into a box with each being sleeved up, and a smaller box for trade, and my decks also go into a box (I can fit about 6-7 decks in this box).
I used to have a binder, but it got lost/stolen (probably stolen, as I don't see how I could have lost it) luckily it didn't have anything worth much in there (a couple of $10 mythics, but all the cards I care about were alread in decks).
A bunch of little plastic boxes in a shoebox. It's easy when you don't have many cards.

Atm I have 3 shoeboxes and 3 set boxes lined with cards according to colors but eventually I will get down to doing sets and in each set organized by color.
By set chronologically (besides core sets) and then by collector's number. For older sets with no numbers, by standard type sort (WUBRG Gold Artifacts Lands), and then alphabetically. Except, I don't keep lands with their sets, I have those sorted out seperately. In fact, I have a couple piles of lands I like better than others that have top priority for deck usage (like the chippy lands!). Oh, and I keep my rares in a separate box, sorted by set and number. Same with mythics and foils.
And as for containers, Well, I have the bottom drawer of a chest of desk drawers (you know, those plastic drawers), and a couple of those white cardboard boxes. As well as various deck boxes.
Easy. Aside from my decks, the rest of my collection is stored in a 800-card box; sorted by colour (White, White-Blue, White-Black, Blue, Blue-Black, etc. Artifacts and lands last) and then alphabetically.

I have 3 4000 card boxes (!). Separated by colour (Black - Blue - Green - Red - White), then artifacts, then gold multi-colours, then split multi-colours (the split cards from Apocalypse go here), then the lands.
Then, I separate commons from uncommons, and sort in alphabetical order. It's a hassle, but it keeps things organized.
For me, I have boxes for each color (and one box for multicolors and artifacts), and a divider to separate cards in and out of Standard. Since I have only been playing since Shards and most of my stuff outside of Standard is pre-Mirrodin collections of other players, it's been easy to separate the two.
I'm curious as to what other people's systems are.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
I have them all set by color on a binder. So far only uncommons/rares/mythics make it to the binder, but I'd love to add commons too and will probably do soon enough. I'm a collector, and I enjoy seeing all cards by each other's side. Main rule is, though, that any single card can only take ONE spot on the binder, unless they have different art. I can fit a playset of it on a single spot of the binder anyway (monster binders have lots of space), and any extra cards go to the card box.
I keep a binder full of rares and a binder for uncommon's pulled from recent decks and a binder for foils. The rest of my cards are in boxes based on color in alphabetical order aside from standard. For standard block's I usually buy a fatpack per set and in that I keep all commons for that set and then I have a long box for standard uncommon's. All of this takes up 3 LARGE rubbermaid tub's as I am moving in a week. I wish I had enough binders for everything as I really hate digging through boxes. I enjoy the visual feel if the binder and I think it helps me think up deck idea's better when I am flipping through the binder vs sifting through boxes.
I may or may not have registered just to ask this question.
The events thus far. Friend taught me how to play, gave me a new hobby to obsess over (I really need a job/social life, etc). Now, I dont have a MASSIVE COLLECTION like some people here but my inner collector (stamps and coins handed down from my grandfather, pokemon cards way back when) would like to start sticking some of these miscellaneous ones into pages before my brother, who thinks he can get away with lugging a stack in his pocket to his friend's house down the street, completely destroys them.
So, I start looking at options. Boxes don't really handle my "I want to see a pretty collection" complex, which leaves me with binders. Here I've got two options: either an average-sized thing with pages glued/sewn in or big, d-ring things with plenty of space and the option of adding more. Since this will probably be a growing collection, I think the latter wins out. I like this: http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Magic-Gathering-MTG/dp/B0018P4K98/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1281899705&sr=1-1 <-Simple, with the MTG logo. So far so good.
Love this thread - it's neat to see how everyone has such different approaches to organizing their collections. I've been at this for 17 years and believe me, I need to be organized or else I'd never find anything . It all starts with a good place to work (supplies are in the drawers)...
Once everything is sorted, it is stored on the bookshelf - all my cards are stored here...
The graded cards are on the top 2 shelves...
The next 2 shelves are my sets - they are stored in albums...
The bottom shelf is for my playstock...
All my playstock is stored double-sleeved in Yanoman coppers and perfect fits (so I can pull them for decks at a whim), except for my bulk. All bulk that is "better" (rares, foils, Alpha-Legends, signed, etc) is stored just in perfect fits; all other bulk is loose (and saved only for sigs or to give away)...
Close up of my graded storage...
Close up of my modest collection of sealed (gotta love the vintage Star Wars ;))...
I'm finally getting around to using a camera and Photobucket to share some of my stuff - hope you all enjoyed it, and thanks for looking!!!
Take it easy,
Jared

Kinda off topic but your wife is hot in your wedding pic. =) Nice. Also, you have THE MOST ORGANIZED COLLECTION TO CARD QUANTITY RATIO EVER! (IF YOU CAN EVEN QUANTIFY ORGANIZATION HAHA). Either way, this is amazing.
Well this is how i do it. I usually get a playset of commons and uncommons for each set. Then i order it by color. As for the rares, i order it in a box by color and alphabetical order. This works for me. I only started in zendikar though.

I'll sort everything when I finish making decks with all the bits and pieces of crap I keep. A lot of it is for Pauper decks I once wanted to make.

This leaves me with choosing pages. http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_supplies.php?viewType=Bags%20and%20Folders&info1=Bag%20and%20Folder&info2=BCW&info3=Case look awesome, and let's face it - I'm in this for aesthetics, too. Unfortunately, Ive heard the vinyl pages can be damaging in the long-run and I dont really have the desire to put each cards in single-sleeves for any reason before I put them in the pages.
----
TLDR: Sexy vinyl pages. Y/N? Page suggestions?
Edit: Oh, and I also like the sound of side-loading pages. I remember my pokemon cards would fall out a lot and it drove me nuts
