I like the old frames. I agree with previous posters who said it has more of a fantasy feel to it. I guess that's why I like old 70's and 80's book covers, like Choose your Adventure.
I would love the old frames if they were easier to read. The text is pretty horrible on them, but generally speaking, foil old frame cards look very good. The modern frame seems somewhat boring to me, but overall I think it's a better design.
Since I'm a new player, I tend to prefer the modern frame over the old one, but both are fine. As long as there are no white borders or futureshifted frames , I'm okay with it.

Agree completely. I absolutely love the classic and retro feel of the old frames. They also feel a lot more "magical" or arcane than the modern frames. The new ones are good, and looked especially good for Mirrodin, but it's somewhat stale in my opinion.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
I prefer the old frames for black cards, blue cards, and artifacts, but I'm indifferent about the other colors.
About a week ago I picked up two judge foil swords of light and shadow to replace the others I was using in edh and I'm so much happier to have the old frames for those particular foils.
The new frame just looks too....modern for artifacts which should have an older archaic look to them by default.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
I know this is an old thread, but I just got back into MTG a couple months ago after having last played when the old card frames were still being used and just thought I'd add my thoughts to this thread rather than create a new one.
I think the new frames are cleaner and easier to read, but the old frames had a more fantasy/mysterious look to them, and were overall more enjoyable to look at and play with.

This is more or less my thoughts on the matter. Wonder if there is some way that these two styles could be combined to create a frame that is elegant, clean, but really conveys the fantasy feel well.
I dunno, something about the old frames, particularly how the red old frame's art had cracks in it, as if I were looking at a card carved on red stone, that I really liked.
The 2003-2013 frame is my favorite. It is the most readable of all the frames. The new one has too much black on it, although I like the anti-counterfeiting features.

I'm in love with the Future Sight frames particularly on lands. River of Tears
(Then, I do love the look of Netrunner's cards...)
I wish we had some current frame with the old artifact background, those still ook pretty great.
I started playing during Revised. The old frames hold a lot of nostalgia value for me, and have a certain "rough" quality, the appeal of which I can understand.
They are, however, pretty bad from a functional design standpoint. Aesthetically, I also greatly prefer the much cleaner modern look to the older style, though that's entirely down to personal preference. The only reason I don't consider the old frames entirely inferior to the modern frames is nostalgia. If Magic were invented tomorrow and someone making it showed me an old and a new frame and asked which they should use, I'd instantly pick the modern ones. Even without my preference for a cleaner style, legibility beats all other considerations.
I started playing during 4th, and although I really liked the old frames, I think the new one is cleaner and makes the cards look really great. That said, I prefer the frame used until Theros, the new-new one with the hologram has too much black on the bottom.

Before the glory of Yawgmoth, yes, even this makes sense.
I've been playing since Magic's inception but I think the new frames are way better. Everything on the card is cleaner and more defined. Old framed cards look cheap by comparison.
Old Frames (1993-2002)
I love these the most. Honestly if WOTC did a single block in this style with black borders they would probably sell a lot more.
New Frames (2003-2014)
I was and am still upset that these became the norm for how frames looked for a decade.
Current Frames (2014-Present)
Frankly they look downright hideous design-wise.
I like the Modern frame more, but all are alright. The current frame is still a tad odd to me, but we did need something to help with fakes. My major problem with the current frame is the tokens as you have that blank bar below their type if they don't have any ability, and that annoys the hell out of me.
I think new frames (2003 - present) are the worst thing that happened to magic, really, the worst
Of course, the artwork has become hideous as well (at least most of it, there are exceptions, but the ones that survive get killed by the frame), too much digital, too much gloss and brightness, no variability (I remember when artists had their distinctive style on mtg cards), looks too much like an ugly world of warcraft universe.
I only collect old frame cards, especially really old ones which have the best artwork on them.
Gamewise I think magic is still very good, especially in limited (though I could go for hours on the many problems I have with how the game developed)
That all being said, I started playing almost 15 years ago, could be my old player bias, but I just wish at least some cards could get printed in the old border, not asking for that much..
Loved the Planeshifted frames, and don't have a preference between the old, modern, or new card frames. The only thing I miss about the old card frames are the brown artifacts, as I miss "Mono Brown", and it's the only way the Browns could ever win anything it seems ( and that's coming from a current Browns fan )

I don't think I'd want to go back to having smaller frames for art. No card type box and no power/toughness box.
It's like the dragon shield sleeves logo. It makes the product look old even when it's new.
What gets me the most is the frames change in colors, you can't play brown anymore.
