I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
I collect Arabian Nights mountains..my goal is to get 24 of them (current count...6)
As you probably know, there is ONE guy who drove the price of those beautiful lands by collecting them...over 100 of them he has and upped a video of them all in Youtube...I want some too
As of my current "collection", I have a unique land card for each color and only use those. They are not that expensive, since the hobby budget won't allow me to only run GURU's, but there are the lands I strictly use:
There are other lands I am fond of, like Zendikar Mountain 244 (http://magiccards.info/zen/en/244.html) but it does give you an edge, albeit a small one, to only have one art for your lands (say, all basics being the same) and on otp of it I enjoy the symmetry.

I just started to collect Unglued lands again. I used to have a ton of them back when they were first released but unfortunately they were part of the cards that got sold off.
Prior to that, I was collecting Unlimited lands. I have a ton of Revised lands and preferred white bordered land when playing since they're easier to recognize at a quick glance. I played a ton of Valakut and Wolf Run, so it was convenient to have a mental shortcut when ramping. I liked Unlimited over Revised because the colours are more vibrant and they don't have the tap symbol

In a very large binder I have:
- one of every land from Alpha to M13 (including un-lands and the zendikar *non* full art lands).
- the vast majority of lands from all special sets or decks (from Starter 1999 through to Planechase 2012).
- all the Euro and APAC lands.
- all the portal 3 kingdoms lands.
- all the MPS lands, and the majority of promo basic lands (Arena lands etc).
- many foil lands.
- a decent collection of basics in non-English.
The most notable omission from my collection is Guru lands, but I'm sure I'll get them one day. I'd also like to acquire more non-English lands, although these aren't exactly difficult to obtain.
I genuinely love MTG basic lands. My favourite part of every new set is seeing the basic land art. If ever I sell my MTG collection, I'm sure I'll keep my basic lands.
BTW, since people ask, even though it's not very 'magic', my favourite all time land is the Colin MacNeil APAC plains depicting Uluru with the kangaroo in the foreground
I haven't started collecting basic lands; but if I was going to do so I'd love to collect Alpha/Beta lands personally. I just prefer my lands actually say "T: Add W to your mana pool." and I like the art from the early sets. Not a fan of full art lands myself, they don't look like magic cards.
The only good thing about this post is the edible chocolate roaches they gave out! Mmm mmm!
*crawl crawl*
Wait a minute, edible roaches don't crawl! EDIBLE ROACHES DON'T CRAWL!
I collect the Zendikar, Unhinged and Unglued lands. In addition I also collect Beta and old Foreign Black Bordered Lands. Korean Islands look really cool with the old art. I suppose I also collect regular basic lands too. However me collecting these basic lands is for two reasons.
1. I've collected basic land and sold it to Star City Games. They literally are the only place I've seen that buys them per 1,000. Considering people just leave them laying, I pick them up and donate some to the store land box.
2. The Ironman format requires lots of basic lands. Ironman is the greatest format OF ALL TIME. When a card hits the graveyard or is exiled, it is permanently removed... via Paper Shredder.

Just check the basic land pictures, these are real pictures of one of the most famous cube's and it basically touches upon most of what we have talked about in this topic.
My recommendation for the 'newcomer' to land collecting is....find a card per land type and collect around 20 of them so you can use them in all your decks. (Unless you have too many to count) Just be sure to check the prices in magiccard.info since a Guru land is worth WAY more than a Zendikar full art.

I use old-frame basic lands in my decks whenever possible. In addition, I tend to go for a single set when selecting the lands for a deck. Rifter taps Mirage plains and mountains, Spiral Tide prefers Ice Age islands (no surprise it occasionally causes Brain Freeze!) and the new, artifact heavy mono-B control deck received Urza's Saga swamps - yay for scrap metal!
Just be sure to check the many versions on the right-hand column.

If anyone's actually after a checklist of Basics, I have an excel spreadsheet with all of them from every English set, including promos. Just doesn't have GURU's and Summer lands on there, cause I don't intend to go for them myself. Could upload it somewhere if anyone is interested
I never knew about Arabian Nights Mountains until this post. Very strange. I wonder why the other basics were not printed in that set.
Arabian Nights was originally going to be a stand-alone set, so all five basic lands were scheduled to be included in the set. When it was decided that Arabian Nights would be just an expansion for Alpha/Beta/Unlimited, and not a stand-alone game, they decided to remove all the basic lands from the common sheet.

They missed one.
I thought it was because they needed an extra card to fill out the sheet.

In the next year or so, I'd like to "upgrade" my deck lands to Arena Urza's exclusively (like http://magiccards.info/arena/en/11.html) and in the future, funds allowing, to GURU only, with the possible exception of Arabian Nights Mountains (http://magiccards.info/an/en/91.html)

That Mirage Swamp is great. I used to have 4 of them in my old Mono Black Discard deck.
