About a year ago, I thought it would be cool to have one copy of every Island. I finally started my Island collection yesterday (see the story below). I now have in my binder every expansion set Island except SHM #286, SHM #288, and AVR #235. I also have a copy of each of the Islands from Unlimited, Revised, 4th, 5th, 6th, M10, and M12. I am missing one M11 Island, and I have not started M13 yet. Also, I even have a few Islands from Portal and Portal Second Age.
Anybody else have Basic Land collections?
My random story. I just built a Mono White Kithkin deck (as is obvious, I am a casual player), and I thought it would be cool to have Lorwyn Plains in the deck. So I went to my LGS and asked for Lorwyn Plains. They told me good luck and handed me 4 large boxes of basic lands. I did not find any Lorwyn Plains in those boxes. So they handed me 4 more. At the very end of my 8th box, I finally found them.
But the during the process of looking for the Plains, I noticed they had tons and tons of pretty Islands that I had never seen before, which inspired me to finally start my Island collection. I managed to get Islands from every expansion block from Ice Age to Shards of Alara (which is when I started playing). It was very exciting.

I don't consider mine a collection, but I keep at least 25 of every land, that way I can have every land in a given deck be the same. I have over 100 of each of the Zendikar full frame lands, I use them for Edh.
I try to make sure every one of my decks has the same of one kind of basic. Since 4 of the 5 got reprinted in M11, it was pretty easy to gobble up a ton of them.
I for some reason can't seem to throw away the lands(or get rid of). I go to sort things out and think, "I don't need all these" but then I just put them right back. I've got basic lands coming out of my ears. I did go and seperate them though.
First I created my "these go in decks I make for FNM or tournys" box. It's got any Un set lands, Zen lands and any land that is a foil.
Then I seperated them by how they look. Anything from Mirrodin to now went in one section and anything before Mirrodin went into another. The older ones aren't as plentyful so I got them all in one fat pack box and I use them when I go do limited events so I don't have to fight with everyone else for lands.
Anyway, I've got a ton of lands and I can be somewhat of a pack rat. I may or may not have a problem.

Whoa! King Felix plays MtG!!! All kidding aside, I am totes jeals of your Zendikar full art land collection. I think I have 25 full art Islands that I am constantly switching between decks.
MPS (or Magic Premier Shop) basic lands are Japanese basics that come in foil and non-foil (depending on the year). They were promos and were based on the different sets that were out (i.e. there are MPS lands based on Mirrodin, Zendikar, Shards of Alara, etc). They're beautiful lands are now relatively cheap, or at least compared what they used to be.
I am kind of doing what you're asking about, I've got a decent group of each basic. Is there a checklist or anything somewhere for the unique artworks? I noticed that there were a number of an old border set reprinted in a new core set, etc.
I just have my Zendikar full-art collection and Ravnica collection. I'll collect all the new Ravnica lands as well. Ravnica has the coolest art on the lands of any set so far imo, and Zendikar is a close second. God if they make the new Ravnica basic lands full art, sales will go through the roof. Won't happen but I can dream can't I
I collect forests. I have every standard forest Alpha through current as well as Alternate 4th, CE, IE, Square Cut, 3 playtest forests and 1 test-print. Am currently trying to hunt down reasonably priced Summer Magic copies.

Two things...
1) That's pretty cool. I like the idea of having a land type, and trying to collect them all. I really enjoy anything that broadens trading horizons too.
2) Good luck with the Summer of Magic Forest! I saw one for $200 sell... that was sad. Do you have the APAC, EURO, MPS, ARENA, and GURU Forests already too?

I am working on a basic land collection. Excluding promos, special sets, and Summer Magic, I have 1 of every basic land from Alpha to M13. Eventually, I'll probably start collecting the promos and special set basic lands as well.

I have all of the APAC, EURO, and the GURU (and the Arena, 6x9, &c.)
I forgot to mention my Forest proofs, signed cards, and misprints.
I only have a little over half of the MPS. My collection is extremely sketchy when it comes to foreign releases. I happen to have a lot of foreign forests but it's not something I've chased down yet. My English collection is hard enough to keep under control. I keep my progress posted in my sig.

There's a guy at a local LGS that has a binder of every art of nearly every basic printed, plus all the ones that can be foil are foil. He trades quite highly for anything that he can 'upgrade' or lands from new sets.
My wife collects these plains, http://magiccards.info/m11/en/233.html she tries to make every white deck she uses only have these art. Every time we go to a prerelease and either of us plays white we pick any of that art out that we find. No idea how many she's got now but it's got to be more than 100 by now.

Yeah, I really like that Plains. I have a friend who collects that artwork as well. I think he has 20 or 30.
I love the Ice Age lands, especially the forests. I'm always looking for ones in better condition than my current collection - I try to use these lands in every deck I build. It's a collector-like habit, but I've never really considered it collecting.

I also love the Ice Age lands. You probably know already but just in case, the original Ice Age land art was used for the Coldsnap theme deck basic lands and 1 version of each was foiled for the 2001 arena promo lands. Just in case you want to mix it up a bit.

That is really interesting. If I ever run into a foil basic land with a bird, I will let you know.

There's a good article on it from SCG here.
I really love the Ravnica lands, i'm still in the process of trying to complete it. On the contrary I don't like SoM/MBS/NPH Basic Lands.

Trade thread - not up to date
Part of my collections of basics is a selection of ~160 euro lands, so that may be an accurate assessment.
I am also partial to the Innistrad/Avacyn Restored cycle of lands, the dark ones in Innistrad and the "cleansed" ones in Avacyn Restored.

These are pretty cool. http://magiccards.info/mps/jp.html I might have to pick some up for my collection.
I just searched for Island on magiccards.info.
I like the SoM/MBS/NPH lands. I think the progression from shiney to phyrexian-y is cool.
Nice collection!!!

I agree I think the ISD/AVR land cycle is cool. Especially the Plains. The Islands are not quite as good.
