Many stores pay out in packs. What do you do with yours? In the past I've opened them but I'm planning on just keeping them closed and trading or sellin them. What about you?
If the set has decent EV, like when it's first released, I'll crack them or draft with friends. Otherwise, I'll use them as throw-ins to close out trades.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
My store pays out in credit other than for pre-releases, for which (for the last three anyway) they do a mix of packs and credit. Some people have tried to sell the packs, but I've just opened mine. I top 16ed the last two and got 3 packs with my credit: DKA I pulled a Huntmaster out of one (which I sold for cash at the SCG pre-order price, before it went up), AVR I just opened some jank.
Draft with friends, 100% of the time. We get together in groups of 6 or 8, draft, then split into 2 random teams, and the winning team gets all the cards.
Each member of the winning team gets to pick one rare (who gets first pick is randomly decided), then they randomly divide the rest of the rares / valuable commons and uncommons among themselves.
Way more fun than cracking, and the draft practice will make you more likely to win the store's drafts in the future.
During pre-release and release events I crack em. I also tend to buy a couple boxes and crack those as well. After the release date though I just hold all my packs and trade them to people. The value in trade per pack at the store I attend is around 3.50 a pack so they even work as filler in trade where someone is like I don't see a 6 or 7 dollar card I am looking for. "2 packs sound good to even it out?" the normal response is sure and then a handshake and so forth.
I know people who never crack packs and will sell them to buy singles. I just like to crack packs at first then I am normally tired of them by the week after release and will just trade them as I already have the playsets I need from the set at that point. Just preference honestly.

I can pay for my next draft with the packs I win, so I generally do that. I only paid for 3 drafts last semester, and played 6 or 7 for free. I also had 5 to open, as I ended the M12 cycle with 2 packs and opened my last three Innistrad packs before going on spring break.
Second semester didn't go as well... Something about Dark Ascension drafts just didn't work out all that great. The last event of the year I walked it with 8 packs, and since I wouldn't be able to use them to draft at our club I opened them. Despite getting 6 foils, the best card I opened was a Champion of the Parish, and the next best was Gavony Township. I wish I could have just paid for more drafts with them instead
I generally avoid stores that pay in packs, and play at stores that do Store credit. Obv Store credit is far better, cracking packs is never good, while Credit lets you go "infinite"
My FLGS pays out in packs at Limited events (and free tournaments), and Prize Credit at constructed tournaments.
Prize Credit is like Store Credit (which we can buy for cash to use in trades with other players), except:
- you cant use it to pay for tournament entry (even Limited)
- you cant use it to pay deposits on pre-orders
- you cant trade it away
- instead of lasting 4 weeks, it lasts 2 weeks1 week until the end of the day
"Going infinite" is rather tricky in such circumstances...

Thats rough!
Our store credit lasts forever, and is given for most tournies with an entry fee. Can use it to buy anything in the store except pop etc. Your not "supposed" to use it for Entry, although the Owner makes an exception for me. So going infinite is fine if your smart.
Even if we can't trade store credit, I can just buy people things on my name.
If a store insisted on giving packs as prize, I would want to be able to enter limited events with said packs and pay the difference. If you want me to play limited, and I can't rollover my prize to play more limited events, nty.
