I was in the middle of responding to the "age quit = Unsportsmanlike Conduct?" thread which was closed before I could post my insights. Consequently, I've created this new thread to discuss, explore, and debate anger control issues among players (who are sore losers for the most part).
One player in my city just placed 2nd on a big event tournament, he then proceeded to open all his prize, 20+ boosters, and tear up all the rares/mythics one by one. Open the pack, tear the rare, open another pack, tear the other rare, rinse and repeat.
These people should get something in their DCI records, for me, this is not an acceptable human behavior.
You shouldn't let this bother you. Chances are he did it with the intent of irking others who may have wanted to win said rares and mythics. However, by you (and others) not getting visually upset despite his obvious stupidity, his plan to get shocked reactions from others fails, and he may even acknowledge how irrational, arrogant, and pointless his behavior is. Ultimately the cards are his property, so if he wants to destroy them that's his prerogative. Ironically, by tearing up his own rares, he actually increases the value those cards (albeit somewhat insignificantly) since there are fewer copies of those cards in circulation as a result.
As far as "rage quitting" goes, I've seen it before and feel it's highly inappropriate and immature. Perhaps it was purely circumstantial, and the guy was just upset that he lost to a girl who was younger than him, but chances are he has deep seeded anger management issues, due to a chemical imbalance, or a lack of proper social upbringing.
A few months back, I was playing in a small eight person fnm draft at a local store, and this one guy who was trading with the store clerk came to the back of the store where we were seated, flipped out randomly, and said "I should start carrying a weapon on me!", then started uttering borderline death threats under his breath (but loud enough for us to hear) for no apparent reason. What made me feel extremely uncomfortable was the fact that the comments/threats didn't even seem to be directed at anyone in particular. Another guy who was playing in the draft and knew this weirdo asked what had happened, and I couldn't even believe the explanation that came out of his mouth. Evidently he was furious about not getting "fair value" for the surgical extraction (non foil) which he traded to the store for three copies of another cheaper card. Unfortunately I can't remember what the card he traded for was, but I was dumbfounded by the pettiness and couldn't believe he got so angry over losing a dollar or two in a trade with a store (which is expected since stores usually buy at 45-60% or trade at 70-80% value). So another guy at my table tells him "You knew in advance that the store only trades at 70% value, so if you didn't need the other cards right this minute, why didn't you just hold onto the extraction and trade with someone else for better value?" His response was something along the lines of "I'm impatient." (the understatement of the century).
In my mind all I could think was "Wow!, What's wrong with this guy?!", because when he initially flipped out, I honestly thought he had just lost a multi-thousand dollar legacy staples binder or something. Anyways, long story short, another guy who was there said that the guy (who he knew since high school) has always been a bit unstable and has already been banned from 4 other stores in the city (which wouldn't surprise anyone who witnessed the outburst that I did). In any event, I decided not to go back to that store since I didn't want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, just in case that dude decided to come back one day with a sawed off shotty to accompany his short temper. To be honest, I'm usually very tolerant of other people's social imperfections (or total ineptitude) because I get along well with most people, but that experience was really odd, and still makes me uncomfortable to this day. If I was the clerk or store owner, my immediate instincts would be to ban him for life, but knowing how unstable he is, who knows if that would be the right decision since that might actually backfire and provoke him to seek revenge against employees and/or players at the store. In the end, Who knows what the underlining issues was. Maybe he's just bipolar and just forget to take his sedative meds that day.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.
Still, I would think that the guys local reputation would be enough to hurt the shop he frequents most enough that they kick him out... I know plenty of shops in my area that just wouldn't put up with that crap.
Still, I would think that the guys local reputation would be enough to hurt the shop he frequents most enough that they kick him out... I know plenty of shops in my area that just wouldn't put up with that crap.
I doubt the employee working there at the time heard the guy's outburst. If he did, I can't imagine him just letting it slide. I contemplated taking some initiative and saying something to the clerk after he left, but I decided not to since nobody else who was there thought his threats were serious (which in itself was a bit disconcerting), and I decided that I didn't want to be that guy who ratted him out and got him banned (even though he definitely deserved to be). It may sound selfish, but I decided to avoid further confrontation because I have way too much stress and drama in my life already that I don't need or want some guy who's angry at the world to have any reason to be angry towards me in particular.
Furthermore, logic dictates that in due time he would undoubtedly get himself banned from that store on his own, since he successfully managed to get himself banned from four other stores already. I can't say why he got banned from three of them, but I was informed one store banned him for assaulting a younger player who also happened to be a minor. I didn't witness the other incident, but according to hearsay, he got so angry at a comment made by his opponent during a game (which was supposedly condescending) that in a fit of rage he grabbed the poor fifteen year old by the collar of his shirt and threatened to "take him out" (which I suppose meant he was ready to knock the guy unconscious). Whoever was working in that store at the time apparently told the guy never to come back or he'd call the cops, and I guess that was enough of a deterrent to keep him away for good.
Now I usually don't have reason to bash store policies, but as far as the store I was at (when the incident I witnessed occurred) is concerned, I don't really care what they do, nor do I feel it's my place to advise them on how to improve their business (or playing environment). In all honestly they're pretty delinquent to begin with, and they tend to make bad decisions all the time which has already driven away most of their customers to the competition. For example, their singles prices are literally through the roof (150-250% of what everyone else is selling them for), and they're the only store that I know of which not only charges more for drafts ($12 vs $10) and sealed deck events ($30 instead of $20) than other stores, but also offers fewer prize packs to winners! If you think that's ridiculous, they even encourage people to pay a yearly "membership fee" in order to participate in certain events at a slight discount (ie: $25 instead if $30 for sealed deck events, which ironically is still more than what other stores charge random walk-ins for the same events). Try to figure that one out! Personally, I think they're either greedy, desperate, or don't have a clue how to build a loyal returning customer base, but people can run their businesses however they want even if they're destined to fail.

I have a friend that we play EDH with who acts like he's untargetable. When you do end up targeting him, he gets upset and says various things that makes him sound very childish. When he loses, he blames his opponents and his deck. I strip mined his land once and he kicked me. He's kinda unstable, but we just usually laugh him off. Plus he gives us free food and drinks and place to play. So there's that...

So this one guy that frequents my local store brought his fiance to her very first draft. She was clearly quite lost with the concept, but was just as clearly having a lot of fun with it and got the gist of what to do. After realizing at the start of the draft that Innistrad has a flip card in every pack, she made it her mission to collect every one she could find and make a deck out of them. With each new announcement of "I choose ___ flip card!" The face of the guy sitting next to her got darker and darker.
"Why are you taking ALL the flip cards? Don't you know that their all different colours? It doesn't make sense!" to which she replied "But they're different and cool!".
On the second to last pack she pulled an Instigator Gang and the guy (who i guess was trying to draft werewolves or something?) exploded on her and called her a dumb B$#$.
She looked confused and taken aback and the final pack rotated in silence. After everyone was done, the fiance (who up until this point had been very quiet) stood up, walked over to the other side of the table, and slugged the slimeball in the face. hard. It was epic.
Both the guy and the fiance were forced to leave the store as the coordinator in charge didn't get the full story, but as he was leaving I heard the fiance say "she still gets to play right?"
4 players (including myself) conspired to let her win each match and she went home with a modest amount of boosters. To this day i bet she thinks her deck was awesome.

People seem to forget that the best way to foster new players is to give them a shot, treat them fairly, and help them grow. Of course some of these people with anger issues I'm willing to bet are people who have been in their local "Scene" for a while and are sick of seeing new blood come into what used to be "thier" store and stealing "thier" records.
I'm glad I haven't seen any outbursts as extreme as the ones mentioned here. I did used to go to a store for fnm where multiple people would get pissed off about luck and start cursing about missing land drops pretty frequently. Didn't take long to stop going there
I shared my "card tearing" experience because it was pretty similar to the original on the other thread. Nobody gave a damn to the sore loser, and he just stormed out after all the drama.

I just realized something. The reason that people like this exist are because everyone is wimps. All the comments are "I don't like confrontation", "I don't want to be that guy", "I was afraid of ruining my reputation", "Maybe he has problems".
Don't you realize you could have done something? If they are being a jerk, stand-up for yourself. If they are making a scene, tell them to check themselves or GTFO. Don't come on here, and post about how you did nothing, or how you stopped going to the shop because you are afraid of someone.
It's easy to kick them out, and it's easy to keep someone in check. Some people have problems where they can't keep track of their own anger, and just need someone to tell them them to calm down, and some people are just *******s who need to be banned. The only way to find out is to actually talk to them. Which appears to be a really scary thought for most people.

"If you don't wear your seatbelt, the police will shoot you in the head."
- To my youngest sister when she was 6.
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.

I would agree here. People really need to let people know that it's NOT OKAY to behave like this. It's not like you're going to hurt the person's feelings. It's one thing if they threaten personal harm, but when you take away that power they asume they have (i.e. having a big mouth), then usually the person backs off, or just goes away.
In my local shop, I'm at an empass with one particular individula, he makes a deck that beats mine so i bring a deck that beats his and we always end up playing on round three so who wins in that round ALWAYS goes on to win FNM its kinda funny, but we both have an uncanny ability to snap, because 90% of our rounds are a good games 1 battle, a sweeper in game 2 because one of us sideboarded better then the other, and almost always in game three one of us gets severely mana flooded, or screwed. Now when that happens to me I get VERY upset with my deck, and likewise he does the same, and i dont thinkt here is anything wrong with that. However in my store we have one particular kid we nicknamed him "troll" and troll gets bad over EVERYTHING you do,he only plays mono-coloured decks because he cant wrap his head around 2-3 colour strategies, i remeber playing him with a Bant list i put together for fun, and i O-ring'd his Liliana and out came the first pound on the table curses and damn near tears lol, he actually spernt the rest of the game "shaking" from anger to which i laughed and walked away after i beat him. I believe anger is a necessary and healthy part of any players life as it drives you to be better, but aso to be able to recognise the reason as to why you have become angry, i.e. ok i drew to mana forest, cut a couple and add 1-2 plains that should make it better. that was a very simple and crude example but i hope everyone gets it, as for severely angry players the best way to deal with them i've found is treat them like and other threat on the table and make them work against themselves and REALLY angry player makes mistakes and can be easily overcome

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but anyone who gets mad enough at pieces of cardboard for it to be noticeable has a problem. Both situations you described are ridiculous, if someone can't handle loosing they shouldn't be playing.
Well, I agree the second thing i aid about the guy we call troll is definately rediculous. Me and my buddy are trying to team up and help each other jump up from the amateur to pro level, so we spend ALOT of time playtesting and using each other as we come from a small area, but when we take our decks to actual events and we spend all this time playtesting and successfully only for it to crash and burn when it counts would disappoint the best of us, we dont get table flipping angry lol, or tear up cards angry, but we voice our disappointment and anger at the poor showing thats all

I think play mistakes are probably the biggest palm to face moments you ever have, i was playing a little junk deck last FNM end up 2-1 because i swung with thrun and buddy was tapped out with only a bird and a skinshifter, so i swung thrun in and totally overlooked the bird, he blocked with skinshifter gave me a weird look, and then turned skinshifter into a 4/4 rhino my thrun died his skinshifter died, and then he dropped a SoFaF and swung with bird for for the win needless to say "FACE PALM" head down, shuffled sideboard, and was a little more vigilant in game three

If I lose a game because of my own mistakes (and they are legion) then I get mad at myself, but never violent. Worst you will ever get out of me on that is a "damn, that was stupid".
I know someone in our casual group that every time he loses he starts muttering about "internet combos" and sulks. That's code word for "you beat me because you net deck, you couldn't otherwise", but he isn't violent, just firmly convinced that he is really a better player than he is.
Our local group has no violent players. The game store a state away that is the closest FNM, on the other hand, has that one guy I started that other post about. Fortunately, that is the worst I have had to deal with lately.

There are people who are just rotten people, but there are also those who have their heart in the right place but just get genuinely frustrated with the game sometimes. Yeah I know, "it's just a game", but part of it being a game is it being enjoyable.
I can say from experience that I've had many moments where I get frustrated with the luck factor in the game. Especially with limited events, to build fantastic decks and consistently get screwed over by mana issues game after game, week after week, gets aggravating after a while. Is it a problem with my shuffling? Maybe, but I've tried every legal shuffle method in the book.
To look over beside you and see these fantastic games full of back-and-forth action, while you look at your games where the only time you've managed to pull out a win for the past six drafts was because your opponent got more manascrewed than you did... You try to stay a good sport about it, but it becomes extremely discouraging.
There's a reason they call me "the manascrew guy" at my store.

- To my youngest sister when she was 6.
Fear not the night, fear those who walk the night.
And I am he that walks the night,
But only evil need to fear me
And gentle souls sleep safe in their beds
Because I own the night.
