W,w,w,what? That's her? I might consider the troll prognosis confirmed. I hardly pick and choose myself, but I wouldn't have looked twice, hell even once, at her on the street. im not gay, but I might even rather schtup Finkel. Her strike one is 20/20 vision.
"I can remember one occasion, taking a shower with my wife while high, in which I had an idea on the origins and invalidities of racism in terms of gaussian distribution curves."
-Carl Sagan, writing as Mr. X in 1969
I would be put off if my date wanted to take me to a play about Jeffrey Dahmer too. I support her quest for female empowerment, even if she's exposing Jon Finkel as a creeper in the process.
I actually agree with all of her reasons for not wanting to date him, she is absolutely correct. If only she knew that. Sadly, she sees only that she got to exploit someone for a few bucks, and from what I can see, Jon really couldn't care less, and is busy enjoying the fact that people like him as it is, and even more so now it seems.
She was too caught up in herself to realize there actually were some good reasons to not go out with him, which have been mentioned here already, and instead glorified her own drunkenness and put down his intelligence, to get some page views.
Successful troll is successful, in this case, it looks like.

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
Did she get fired for this article? I hope she did.
I honestly don't know anything about Finkle, aside from the fact that he's a Shadowmage Infiltrator, and I don't care that she's not into Magic, but the way she puts it across is down right insulting.
It's one thing to say "This person was into a hobby that I don't find interesting at all, and as such I didn't think it would work out due to that fact and other reasons.", but when you make it out to sound like he has some kind of STD because of his hobby and tricked you into dating him, that's just absurd. Remember, your dislike of a hobby is your fault, not someone else's.
Also, I kind of want to see this play about Jeffrey Dahmer. Have tickets, need date?
Publicly trashing someone by name on a widely read site, when that person did nothing wrong, is NEVER cool. Not wanting to date him is totally legit - ID'ing him openly in your blog is not.
I agree about nerd-baiting as trolling for traffic.

Gawker does this everyday. Its how they get hits. They used to have a semi credible news circle going. Now its just ads and drivel about w/e will get more clicks.

Don't hold your breath. The whole Gawker freelance model is based on doing ANYTHING for page views. As was pointed out in the Forbes article, she probably made a killing on that blogpost - I refuse to call their yellow journalism pieces articles.
However, we can hope that her credibility is now mud, at least with any geek-related sites. Maybe she can get onto the Cosmopolitan staff now.
I feel bad for all of the guys out there who happen to be good at a non-mainstream nerdy thing and are, for all intents and purposes, socially competent and great guys but may not have the best self esteem who are affected by the Alyssa Bereznaks of the world.
Finkel doesn't need the support he's getting -- he's world champion and has financial success attributed to and beyond his nerd-game hobby. And, to be perfectly honest, a homely-looking troll-journalist is not even approaching even some of the less attractive women I've dated, let alone what an attractive gentleman like Finkel, who has success both in his nerd hobby, outside it, and financially, could get on those merits alone (and saying this woman is homely is really just a nice way of saying I'm not surprised she wound up on a online dating site but am surprised her name doesn't contain "Uthden"). If he wanted a vapid gold digger, his baller status could easily score that for him.
I feel bad for the guys who have the qualities, but not the quantities or self esteem, that Finkel has that are affected by the shallow people of the world, like her.

Part of the problem is that a lot of the Magic Community is pretty young (under 24) and the importance of social perception is still huge. I think that as I have gotten older I care a lot less. I was playing EDH as a bar with Chandrian a few weeks ago and we had the most adorable waitress. She asked if we were playing Magic and when we said yes, she said "Nice, that's pretty cool" and talked about how she had played before. It was ME that assumed she's was going to judge me. Later a bunch of hotties in black dresses walked in getting food before they went out boozing, they glanced at us, and kept walking. I had no reason other than my own self-consciousness to make any assumptions about what others thought of me. As it turns out, nobody cares about pretty much anything.
Something I'm curious about is why Jon Finkle didn't write about his passion for MTG on his profile. If I was a world champion I'd write that, so people who appreciate that would see it, and for people who that is a negative, they would know. The point of online dating is you can meet and find tons of people, when in person it could take forever to find someone compatible who shares similar interests.
In her defense...
I'm guessing the 2 were incompatible in a lot of ways besides "he plays a card game professionally", and I understand that it may be annoying to make the effort to meet someone and find out they left something something out of their profile that is such a large part of their life.

I agree with you. Now. I was very much the same "back in the day" when I hadn't really developed a self esteem to speak of.
But this woman's response to Finkle -- how does that speak for the gamers who aren't mature enough to know that most people don't have entirely superficial, high school-level social skills? How does this say anything to those people that it's anything other than normal for a woman looking at you to judge you on appearance (hedge fund dress) and interests (magic)? I'm not saying this is the majority or even many, but I know there are people out there at all that think that way, because I probably would have felt the same at some point in my life. tl;dr it sucks to be picked on like you're in high school and not everyone knows that's not the norm.
Did he still play? "Yes." Strike one. How often? "I'm preparing for a tournament this weekend." Strike two. Who did he hang out with? "I've met all my best friends through Magic." Strike three.
If I was considering a relationship with someone, I would not want to date someone who:
1. Has a major passion for something I have no interest in and can't see myself getting into.
2. Spends a great deal of time on that hobby (no time together)
3. All of their friends are through this hobby (can't find mutual interests in friends).
Personally, that doesn't sound like dating material to me. Maybe it does to you though, if you fit the 'loser' criteria that you're so scared of.
It has less to do with the Magic aspect, all of you becoming so defensive in this thread are only making you seem insecure with yourself.
If this line of thinking is being used by people, I pray for civilization. If you look at #3 you are basically saying that since his friends like X, there is no possible way they will like anything my friends like. Do I really need to point out that this logically makes no sense? As if people who like Magic do not like anything else on the planet, rofl.
Point #2 wouldn't make any sense for the context of this article either. They went out on two dates, clearly time was made.
I get people want to defend her, but lets not grasp at straws to do it.
shoot, tell you the truth....I can't defend her in anyway. I try to see both sides to this (yeh, I get that not having the same interests can be a dealbreaker)....but I really can't see what she did to be anything more than cyber-bullying...which in my opinion is all that nerdbaiting is.
Ok, so she didn't like his interests, and maybe just maybe the fact that he is dedicated to his hobby is a bit much for her and she wouldn't know how to communicate with him/was intimidated by his status......but that doesn't mean you go online and write a slanderous article (pardon me, Libel), and bash a guy about it. Continuing to make comments about mothers warning there daughters, comparing playing magic to having a kid or being divorced, and some of the other really nasty things she said. Even after the article she continued to press the issue/slander and libel.
Bullying is Bullying no matter the target, the audience, or the media. And that is all she did.
The only good thing that I see about this is kharma to the nth degree. She posted such a hatebred message, and now she is the one that is going to suffer. Yes, she is making a lot off of this. But really, was the money worth the cost of being known as....Well, you all read the memes, I don't have to repeat. Plus, if she ever wanted to get a real job in journalism and not just blogging (sorry for all you bloggers out there, I am not attacking blogging, just bloggers like her), this is going to be a huge red mark on her.
I avoid a lot of blogsites (I only go to a few on blogspot to tell you the truth), mainly because I see so many articles like this. Shoot about six months ago there was one on AVclub that really angered me...and it broke down into bullying and profiling someone due to interests.
I can certainly understand being turned off by people who have hobbies you consider outside the norm. Like it or not we all have our personal predjudices.
But then going online and posting an article trashing someone over it? Especially in a format where the person couldn't even respond? That's just low class.
I also find it funny how someone who does something as socially awkward as trying to find a date on OKCupid trashes someone else for having a socially awkward hobby. Any girl with even the slightest modicum of personality and social skills can find a guy to date, we're not that picky
According to Reddit and the IAMA Jon Finkel AMA conversation people asked him why he didn't mention his magic accomplishments at all.
Finkel responded and I am paraphrasing "It is very hard to claim you are the world champion of something without sounding like a pompous ass."
It is also not uncommon to refuse to list all the nerdy activities you take part in on those websites anyways. I have met quite a few girls from similar websites that were closet gamers but did not mention it in their profile.
Unless said hobby consumes your life I do not feel that you are required to list every damn thing you enjoy doing on your dating profile.
Any girl with even the slightest modicum of personality and social skills can find a guy to date, we're not that picky
lol, Not so for this woman. After a night of getting plastered again, she was going home alone. The fact that this entire event strated with that setting alone should say a lot.
Because conservative bias is a far, far worse thing. Liberal bias doesn't, statistically speaking, make people stupid. Conservative bias (or at least Fox's version of it) does.
Found this too yesterday, decided not to share. But here it is, so:
God, what a preppy woman. Nerds run the world now. She should seriously reconsider her tastes.
Many people have stated in this thread why she's not excused of her tone.
Eh, she's entitled to have whatever tastes she like, you can't give somoene a hard time for thier personal prejudices and then dislike them due to your personal prejudices.
Her opinion I don't have a problem with, I don't share it, but she's entitles to it. But what she isn't entitled to do is trash someone in an online story, especially without his knowledge or commentary on the situation added in. If she changed the dat to an interview and allowed Finkle to reply to what she was saying, and included that in the story, that's one thing, but insulting someone online without thier input is pretty low class.

That sounds almost as judgmental as the writer of the article.
