A couple of people have said this, and it's confusing me. I'm familiar with EDH/Commander, but not with foils being a big part of it. Is playing foils-only EDH a thing that people do?
With formats like EDH and Highlander in general, where you have 1 of each card, many people enjoy foiling out their decks to make it look better, since it's much easier to get a single foil of each card as opposed to a set of foils of each card like you'd need to pimp out a constructed deck:)
I agree. I live on the east coast and near the water on top of that. Foils look like semicircles after a couple of days here, and warp even in sleeves. I think foils would perform better if we all lived in a place like arizona that has no humidity.
Really beyond stupid. How are foils special if you keep pushing 100% foil products?
Then again... they ARE going to make money from this.... the foiling sure doesn't cost them the extra $8 you're being charged. And all the poor/sane people will continue to buy regular packs, so this is just trying to tap a luxury market or something.
What an awful idea. Overcharge for foils of the worst block in years. Whoever's cousin came up with this needs to stop speaking up in meetings. lol.
I can think of less than 3 blocks in the history of the game that were better than Shards. 2 if being an overpowered degenerate mess is included in the decision making.
omg. i wanted to defend WotC when people were saying they were out for a cash grab with all the new stuff they were coming out with, now it is a little hard to do. this is just a blatant cash grab imo.
Then don't buy it idiot.
It kills me when people on here act like WotC is Bank of America. Yes, they are a company. Yes, they make money off the game. But this doesn't affect you at all. These aren't necessary to be competitive in tournaments, nor are FTV or the other "in between" ideas.
This icing on the cake stuff is just proof that the company is doing well and thus, can offer us more fun in between products outside of the typical run of the mill Magic flow.
Let's all cry for more options and the health and success of the game. The entire world is crumbling economically, yet Magic is at its greatest fiscally and you socially inept tards still find a way to *****.
Infraction for flaming (and don't doublepost either, while you're at it.)
I didn't think Shards was that terrible. Bloodbraid Elf is one of my favorite cards in years, and all in all, despite the lack of flavor, it was ok...not great, but not Homelands-terrible.
I do agree that this idea is stupid. Good thing I don't care for foils. I feel sorry for the people that damn near spend a grand just so their Extended/Legacy decks look shiny.

Like Metallix87 said, the foil "premium" cards that have come with the starter decks that I've purchased over the last few sets have all warped to the point that I feel it's unfair to use 'em.
I'll probably get at least one. I use a ton of Shards block cards in my casual decks so this would be kind of neat. Not as efficient as just trading for the foils, though.
Would be awesome if they had foil Priceless Treasures...
The question as to whether Shards is a worthy block is irrelevent. If this is popular, they'll do it every block from now on. Which block is better than which is entirely irrelevent.
However, this whole endless-promo stuff is getting a little silly. As a highlander (non-foil) casual player/collector, I don't really care how many zany promotions they come out with, I have no interest in these things, but I know others do. That being said, am I the only one who thinks they're really trying to push Magic as a monthly expense for their customers as opposed to 3-4 times a year?
Think about it, they tried making more cards and sets, there was some backlash, and they decided to make less cards per set. The new mythic rarity helped increase sales but probably not by much. Now they're constantly looking for occasions to come out with something new. I wonder if 5 years from now this time will be looked back on as the start of a promotion wonderland or a spam blitz that irritated many customers. Time will tell.

The only good thing about this post is the edible chocolate roaches they gave out! Mmm mmm!

Wait a minute, edible roaches don't crawl! EDIBLE ROACHES DON'T CRAWL!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe when Wizard's uses the term "Premium Foil", they are referring to the foiling process they have thus far used for the From the Vault series.
This leads me to believe that these packs will in fact not contain regular foils, but premium foils as we have previously seen in From the Vault sets. If this IS in fact true, I for one am personally interested in getting a few packs of these.
I doubt it. They've never really used the term "premium" to describe a whole product, and it's a term a lot of people don't know, so calling these "premium foils" just ends the possibility of any confusion.
I'll buy lots if these are newly printed cards with corrected text, or none if they're just the exact same as the original foils (or if they were lazy, and didn't update the wordings).
I think this idea is interesting. For me I feel its a tad overpriced. I could have seen $9.99 possibly, but $11.99 I think will just put it out of many people's price ranges. Even I have to admit that this seems like a tad much. Though given that demand for shards block has largely waned since m10 and now zendikar has been/are being released, I suppose something to try to help support interest in that block a little more isnt too surprising.
Anyhow, seems like that would be an expensive draft :p. Honestly I just dont see the level of demand for this that we have had for other product. I think Ill probably be reccomending to the shop owner at the shop I run the singles collection for, not to buy these and just focus on the other products we have that we need to keep stocked. Unless of course people come out saying they want these really bad, then perhaps, but its just a little too over-the-top if you ask me.
But hey, if its just a limited release thing and its something that some players want, then hey, why not right? Not every product they make is for every group of players, Im sure some will want this, though most very likely will not. If they want to be gimmicky then I dont think it really hurts anything perse, as long as it doesnt hurt everyone else who plays who chooses not to purchase these items, then I dont really see a problem with it.

What are you complaining about?Wotc want our money?... can I remind you that Wotc run a buisness, it's normal to want cash.If you dont like it just dont buy it, nobody will force them down your troat.Did you lost something because of this release? No.Did you gain something from this release? No?Well the product isn't made for you, please try again later.
Personally I like the idea, i'm a foil ***** so i'm probably going to buy some.

Right. That would be WotC running a business.
I still don't see what's so sinister about these (dumb) deck-pimping releases. WotC has (wisely) stopped releasing as many sets or as many gameplay-distinct cards in each year as it makes it difficult for people to "keep up" and drives away some players -- quite reasonably to complain about that. But there are definitely players out there who spend $X amount on Magic per year, but would really kind of like to spend $2X (or whatever) on it, if they got something "worthwhile" out of it. Releasing completely optional, no-new-cards products for these people to buy makes WotC "free" money (if the products are sufficiently appealing) and has no actual affect on everyone else, so... why not do it?
That said, I don't see this specific product being particularly successful. Foils aren't worth 3x regular cards on average which makes it very hard to really get your money's worth out of packs like this.

There's no way this can be called a cash grab since it's obvious that the target market is small. (Not to mention the willing market.)
They're experimenting with new product ideas. That's perfectly reasonable.
