At my FNM (legacy) Id say the average is about 20. Theres a good mix of middle school kids, college kids (myself), and middle aged folk. Its probably mostly 18-25 year olds though. I do however, live in a town where half almost the population is attending Ithaca college or Cornell University.
Personally, I'm 22 and have been playing magic on and off since I was 8. I don't think I did anything sanctioned till I was like 10 though.
I am 38 and been playing since 97. Most of the people in my playgroup are between 25-35. When I play at my LGS for EDH League, I am in the upper age group but there are plenty in their mid to late 30's a nd a few older than that.
I'm 19, I've been playing since I was in 6th grade (or 12 yrs old). I was the youngest player in my play group until we had to change where we played, which drew in a bunch of new people with the youngest about 13. Oldest is in the 40's I think.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
I think the biggest group of players fall between 16-25 but there are plenty of players outside this age. Pretty much anyone can play (look at the 13 year old playing on camera, day 2 in portland a few weeks ago)
My LGS will have a few under 20 at a prerelease, or drop day, but the majority of players are over 25, especially the ones who are trying to be competitive.
I'm 47, and I am not the oldest player.

I started playing when I was 17. Now, I'm 35. The average age at my Land Ground Store is probably about 24 yrs. old and I believe it to be the "normal" average for this game.
We don't have too many younger players and I haven't seen many ever since I started. The age demographic has gone up.

TheBlackCat is quite the talented necromancer.
I posted in this thread back in 2009, yikes. Now my playgroup ranges from 19 to 22.
The average age does seem to be around 24 judging from the people at my LGS though.
23 now and I've been playing since I was 15 (I think, it was around there).
MTG is probably the only card game I see with an expansive crowd, I don't see that many kids play but they still crop up time to time. From what I see most mtg players are late teens, young adult with a substantial older crowd as well.
How can anyone turn a blind eye to the fact that a poster with 2 posts just unburial rites'd a 3 and a half year old thread? Some serious action needs to be taken.

Eh, I noticed it was necro'd but it's such a general topic I couldn't be bothered caring. It's one thing to necro a thread with a definitive answer was given ages ago where there's nothing more to add (ie. "Should I play X in Y" or rules questions threads"), but we can't really answer everyone's age for them

Word for word the same for me. Except, I don't go to the local shops much anymore. I hit an EDH night once a month, and they tend to be 20-30 for the most part and in my group we span from 21 to 40.

i started when worldwake-shards was out when i was 10. now i'm 15 and still too used to caw blade because i played a lot of standard and i played RDW and grixis...
Started in '94, 34 years old now. I feel like I'm definitely on the older end of the player demographic, but also that the demographic is likely to continue aging (or at least expanding) as time goes on. I hit up an LGS only about once/month for Legacy, and for prereleases. And I've been making it to ~2 GPs per year, but more for the general Magic immersion factor than to actually play.
22, I first played Magic back around Onslaught and Mirrodin I believe. I didn't play much, I think I was in like 6th or 7th grade when I picked up my first cards. I also remember when Unhinged came out. I stopped playing pretty fast though and was never super serious into the game at the time. Fast forward to 2011 and I jump back in after quitting competitive Yugioh, this is around the summertime with New Phyrexia still being somewhat fresh, and M12 nearing release. I played casually with legacy and vintage legal (but not power level-wise, at least not at first) decks. Innistrad makes its debut, I get big into the flavor of the block, I get into EDH with Grimgrin, and that has been my game for the last good chunk of time.
Started in Odyssey block. Took a break from Shadowmoor to Zendikar. Been playing consistently ever since. 25 now. Mostly play Standard and Legacy. Talking like Mordin from Mass Effect 2 for some reason.

I collect pre-release Stone-Tongue Basilisk
I've been playing for about a year.
I quit two years ago, and started up about a year and a half before that.
I quit playing when I was 13-14, but I've played since Like, 95/96.
I remember when they went to the colored rarity, Bblack/silver/gold. I thought it was the dumbest thing ever.
I had an uncle who taught me how to play, I probably watched him long before I ever played.
I know a guy who's in his 60's I think that plays, a number in their 50's, etc.
The age groups around me are diverse.
There are definitely teenagers who play, and often kids too, but I'd say the majority of players are adults 18-30.
And for the record I'm 23
