I was just thinking on the different prerelease cards there has been the last while. Mirrodin Block had the whole useless artifact cycle which were atleast flavorful. Kamigawa Block is just bad, but we knew that. And now Ravnica had Gleancrawler!?!? For a set that is really cool, this was possibly the worst representation of it. I would have prefered any of the uncommon guildmages to this stinkie rare.
But maybe I am just to spikie. What did you guys think of Gleancrawler and prerelease cards of the past?
Gleancrawler may be ugly, but it's at least playable. Other than Gleanie, there hasn't been a single prerelease card that's been playable since Dirtcowl Wurm.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
Gleancrawler is a really good card, and a fine representation of Ravnica. Calling it "A stinky rare" is a pretty stupid thing to say considering it'll probably see some T2 and Extended play. It represents the guild mana thing in Ravnica as well as the Golgari themes. I can't really see what else you were possibly looking for in the prerelease card.

I like gleancrawler, it's a 6/6 for 6 easy mana. And it's ability allows you to dredge without dredging. And personally, i liked avatar of hope as a prerelease...

I highly doubt it will see any play at all and if anyone said anything stupid it was not me considering either 1) you are right and you just end up sounding like a jerk or 2) you aren't right and then you sound like a jerk and your wrong.
Also, I'm fairly sure Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni was the prerelease card for Betrayers of Kamigawa.
I forgot about that one obviously. It was quite excellent and exactly what we should expect.
Lightning Dragon (I think), Raging Kavu, Q-Phells (in domain), Glory, Ink-Eyes are all not playable?
I was implying in my original statement that Mirrodin block onward had bad prerelease cards. I said nothing of past cards which there are a few, some of which you mentioned, that were quite nice.
Apparently, I struck a nerve with people's love for Gleanie which I didn't know existed. I was only hoping that this thread might generate some discussion about what people's thoughts on the prerelease cards were.
I find Gleancrawler adequate, but unimpressive. A 6/6 trampler for 6 mana is nice. Throwing on an added ability makes him good. T2 playable? Plausible, but I'm not seein' it. Maybe with some kind of weird Kokusho build. But overall, he's a slightly undercosted fattie with a nice ability thrown in.
I think Gleancrawler can see some play. The reason they made it a prerelease card is because of its guild mana cost. But let's see about the other playable ones, or at least ones that have seen tournament play.
1) you are right and you just end up sounding like a jerk or 2) you aren't right and then you sound like a jerk and your wrong.
Are either that important? People take too much stock in being right.
Anyway, at the very least you can usually sell them for around $5 so it doesn't matter how terrible it is.
I've never really like Gleancrawler, there are so many guys that are better than him in that spot. Sure its interesting, and someone might play it, but nothing truly competitive.

So they don't have a good track record for prerelease cards, but if they prereleased the best card, then they'd be spoiling the fun.
All i know is that the Prerelease card for Glory is actually entitled "Prayer", thus making it awesome. I love WOTC translations

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
Tempest: Dirtcowl Wurm
Not bad. Easily by black, though. Stronghold: Revenant
Terrible. They could have picked a better card. Exodus:Monstrous Hound
Obviously meant to be played in a land destruction deck. Still sucks. Urza's Saga:Lightning Dragon
Now this one is good. I would've been better without the echo. Urza's Legacy:Beast of Burden
It started off as mediocre, but when Scion of the Wild came along, it's now crap. Urza's Destiny:False Prophet
This card is good. Final Judgment with legs. Mercadian Masques:Overtaker
Not bad, though its ability has since shifted to red. Nemesis:Rathi Assassin
If only Mercenary decks were as good as Rebel decks. Prophecy:Avatar of Hope
I would have preferred Woe Invasion:Raging Kavu
Not half bad, it's all bad. Planeshift:Questing Phelddagrif
Not bad. It did see play, as I recall. Apocalypse:Fungal Shambler
Odd colour combination makes it difficult to play. Odyssey:Stone-Tongue Basilisk
Never cared too much about threshold Torment:Laquatus's Champion
This one is good. Real good. Judgment:Glory
This card is good. Difficult to get rid of. Onslaught:Silent Specter
It's no hyppie, but a good card nonetheless. Legions:Feral Throwback
Mediocre at best. Scourge:Soul Collector
This one's not bad at all. Mirrodin:Sword of Kaldra Darksteel:Shield of Kaldra Fifth Dawn:Helm of Kaldra
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, but not by much. Champions of Kamigawa:Ryusei, the Falling Star
Not bad. Just need a way to sac this. Betrayers of Kamigawa:Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni
I like this card. A lot. Saviors of Kamigawa:Kiyomaro, First to Stand
It could have just have the abilities without any dependence on the number of cards in your hand. Ravnica:Gleancrawler
Not bad. There is a way to break this card. Unhinged:Ass Whuppin'
In the world of Un-, it works.

Yeah, I got nuthin' against the Crawler. Fact is, I was kinda psyched about it. I mean, it's kind of a ridiculous finisher. Just don't run more than two or three.
Keep in mind that pre-release cards should be flashy rares, not tournament sotaples. Their main goal is to appeal to the casual crowd, and thus drag them into pre-releases tournament - and most of the cards they pick do this well enough. Tournament players are going to play at pre-releases with or without promo rares anyway.
Sometimes, the "flashy rare" is also a tournament viable card (Ink Eyes, Glory, Laquatus's Champion, Raging Kavu, etc). Most of the times, it's not, and I can live with that.
That said, I totally hate the Kaldra equipments as pre-release cards. Huzzah, one more thing to hate about Mirrodin block!
Well, Myrrodin block didn't upset me too much, and Gleancrawler for a prerelease card wasn't too bad either. Hey, at least I got a playset, seeing as how I got to enter 4 flights. All considered, sure, they could've done something slightly better, but I ain't complainin'.
yeah - obviously I disagree with you, John. Spam Warning!.....Amazing - even in a forum where posts don't count, there's spam. That proves that getting rid of the post-count won't help getting rid of spam! Thans for this excellent example! - Craven

Gleancrawler is good, Ink-Eyes is good, Ryusei is fair. Kiyomaro (or whatever) sucks... I think Kiyomaro is one of the reasons I was not at all pleased after the Saviors prerelease. But it WAS a bad set.

Kamigawa Block in general was pretty stinky. It reminded me a lot of Mercadian Masques actually with a number of good cards, but overall just being so under powered.
gleancrawler is GOD in limited, by the time you get to 6 mana, usually most of their removal spells are already gone (putrefy, brainspoil, disembowel)
in my ravnica prelease i got a gleancrawler and i got 3-1-1, the loss due to mana screw, but whenever gleancrawler hit the playground, it goes downhill to the other player
with gleancrawler, attack with golgari rotwurm, the wurm trade for 4/4, throw the wurm for 1 dmg, get the wurm back, cast the wurm again, what's not to like
and in a ravnica draft, i got another gleancrawler and the means to transmute into it (forgot the name of the transmuter), i got another 3-1-1, i "lost" the game in the last round due to a "free" glimpse... :tongue2:
(is it okay to say things like this in here? )
bottom line : gleancrawler is GOD in limited, ok in block construct... try facing 6/6 trampler yourself
But maybe I am just to spikie. What did you guys think of Gleancrawler and prerelease cards of the past?

They probably wanted a neodual, or a Cutpurse.
They had a Dimir Guildmage for the Release tournaments.
