5 and 10 are the only ones I could see on magic cards. Of those, I voted for 5, just because it was a little more creative, and had a few directions to go, whereas 10 i could see as a blue legend or as a blue creature control card. I also like 8, but a little to out there for me.
I just thought it might be worthwhile to point out some of the smaller details in some of the paintings and how they could be capitalized on in mechnics/flavor if and when we pick
1)Noice the dorsal ridges/lack of body beneath torso. He could be an underwater creature of some sort. The 'skin' is kind of feathery, though, as if it were falling apart, and he would fit as a ghost or something similar. There are no real details around the thing that might give an impression of location, but the first thing I thought of when I saw it was 'possessed fetus.' I don't know why. Maybe the red eyes. Anyway, he's definitely a monster of some kind, which pretty much exclusively limits this guy to black, although I might be able to see U/B gold. If he were a creature, he wouldn't look impressive enough on a card to give him big stats, but this is YMTC; the whole point is to give it a cool ability, not just some random spike card that's a good beater. I could see it as a creature enchantment or even just a regular enchantment/instant/sorcery that did something to creatures that warped them in some way. But this isn't going to get picked and I don't like the art anyway.
2)This one is obviously the least popular picture, and with good reason. The art is full of mistakes such as the left side of the thing's nose and his back-right hand. None of his hands are a uniform size either, which makes them look really wierd. It's unimaginative, with very little detail to expound on outside of the creature itself; even its mutative extra two arms do nothing to increase the interest of the piece, because they're in the background and it isn't doing anything special with them. They're just hanging there. Any mechanic that would be built on this art would have to be in spite of it, rather than using anything from it, other than the fact that it's doomed to be a green creature.
3)I don't personally like this art, but someone apparently does, and I admit that it has more potential than I gave it credit for at first. Obviously the main focus is on the big BOOM, but the guy in the 'center' has some interesting details(despite the fact that his left thumb is the size of the whole rest of his hand). Specifically, I think it's interesting how he seems to be glorying in, or drawing power from, the destruction more than he's actually causing it. It might be cool if we saw a card that allowed red to benefit from things getting killed, rather than just killing things. We see that as a red effect in Betrayers, with a couple cards that benefit from lands being destroyed. This could be an uber-powerful variant of that effect. Say, a red enchantment:
Glory in Destruction 2RR
Enchantment
Whenever a permanent is put into a graveyard, draw a card.
OK, that's too good, but the point is that that type of interpretation is valid, even when you look at the art from card size.(Unlike the guy's giant left thumb)
4)Honestly, I have no idea where the lava idea came from. It doesn't look like lava. Whatever it is is something much more ethereal than that. It looks to me like pure magical energy being focused into some kind of glyph. Now, this does not get props for being especially well drawn, but it's good enough to be seen on a card, and its simplicity mean there are no obvious errors, even close up. They almost certainly can modify the card if the interpretation we come up with goes in a *slightly* variant direction, so we could, for example, decide that the dark blur in the background is a bunch of priests conjuring forth this power and directing it into this powerful glyph in order to form a spell of incredible subtlety and take over the world! That sounds more black or white than red, but color changes have been known to happen as well. In any case, this is very pretty art, and probably much more up to our discretion as to how to use use than any of the others[/shameless salesmanship].
5)I just have 2 complaints about the art on this card: first, that either her head is levitating above her shoulders, or her neck is about 4 inches too long to be human (most people's chins lie just above the plane of their shoulders when they're standing straight; hers is way up there); and second, that this is SO BORING!!! How many cards have art that basically looks just like this? In what way is this supposed to inspire creative card ideas? It makes me want to spit that this is the most popular piece. Although, I have to say that the purple eyes are a nice touch. It's too bad no one will ever notice them on the card. Also, it seems it's the only piece with the artist's full name on it: Rebekah Lynn Osorio(?), which looks which people CAN see on the card(that right there is a GREAT reason to kill this piece as a choice). Given these complaints, this art does have potential, but it will be in spite of the totally unoriginal art, not because of it.
Anyway, I'll do the rest later; or not, since it's Saturday and I've already done all the pieces that will make it to the next vote in any case. Vote 4!
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
You don't? You didn't notice that it is the only piece with a babe in it for a contest being voted on by (mainly) boys?
It's not even in my top 3 favorites, but it is obvious what the appeal is.
