I added a couple more UC's to the sheet. I don't want to see this set stall out. Let's design the last few UC's so we can move onto the rares by this weekend. Only the following UC slots remain....
- The black "no rebel" creature cycle card.
- 1 red noncreature slot.
- 3 green noncreature slots.
- 1 Drone.
- 2 "other" artifact slots.
We also need to figure out some way to add a few cards for the U/G limited archetype, and there are still a few loose ends to tie up at UC, plus lots of missing FT at UC.

Neither do I. I was really just waiting for Indighost to design the missing cards himself... I'll see if I can come up with some ideas for the missing cards.
EDIT: I designed some of the missing cards. The only slots left to fill now are the one red noncreature and the two generic artifacts.
EDIT 2: I'm going to upload renders of all uncommons as they are right now in a few minutes. In the meantime, I marked the flavor text column in the sheet with different colors:
RED = missing, someone should write it
BLACK = no room for flavor text on this card
BROWN (two cards) = flavor text can be there, but must be shortened to fit on the card
In this folder, uncommon renders. In this other folder, common renders (the same one already published, repeated for completeness).

So I printed out and put together a couple of theme decks of our set. The decks are W/U Brotherhood, and R/G Rebels. I only have cards flavored for each faction in that faction's respective deck. The decks follow a typical theme deck set up, with 2 rares, etc (both of the Rebel rares are cards not yet in the spreadsheet). I have now played them against each other 4 times, with each deck winning twice. The decks have been fun to play, although they both seem pretty strong considering they are mostly one offs and commons. The implants in particular seem quite good. I'm not saying either of these things is over the top, more testing will be needed. Another thing I noticed is, between the implants and the negative auras, the W/U deck sometimes had 3 or more permanents on the opponent's side of the board, which made some rather confusing board states (not to mention clean up at the end ). Also, the Brotherhood deck really scries a lot. This could just be because I kept drawing Information Chip though. So far the coolest interaction I've seen is, The Rebels cast a Break the Bonds on a Chained Baloth (perfect name interaction!) with 4 -1/-1 counters on it, but the Brotherhood cast an Inquisitive Recall returning the Baloth in response (although they didn't get to scry 2 'cause no brainwashed creatures). Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted about any further results/thoughts.

So I brought the two decks to a friends house and played them a few more times with other people tonight. This time, the Rebel deck won all 3 times. The first game, the Brotherhood was in control the entire game, but then stalled out with the Rebels at 4. Then the Rebels took the game over from there. The second game, the Rebellion jumped all over the Brotherhood at first, but then the Brotherhood stabilized and came back a bit, then wiped the board with Mass Roundup when the Rebels started to get the upper hand again. But the Rebels drew the biggest 2 creatures in the deck after that, and won with those. The last game the Brotherhood got land flooded, and it really wasn't much of a game. I saw a lot less implants tonight, than I did when I was testing them by myself (the Brotherhood has 3 in the deck I think). I think I need to add something big to the Brotherhood deck, because the one I have built is too reliant on a bunch of little, evasive, controlling creatures. It needs a finisher. I'll try to post the deck lists tonight after the Mets game. For now, here are the 2 rares I'm playing in the Rebel deck (the Brotherhood deck runs Mollification Mage and Mass Roundup).
Kunfar Instigator
Creature - Viashino Rebel Warrior (R)
Haste Recruit - Whenever another nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, that creature gains haste until end of turn.
3/3
Venakian Beastcaller
Creature - Elf Rebel Warrior (R)
As long as it's your turn, Venakian Beastcaller has hexproof. Recruit - Whenever another nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, put a 3/3 green Beast creature token onto the battlefield.
3/4
I'm not positive I'm done developing the Beastcaller, but these are the rares in the Rebel deck I've been playing. BTW, there was a lot less scrying today.
Edit: BTW, I think I might delete Ratillion Ritual from the sheet and replace it with an Exsanguinate type card. I forgot I wanted to make one of those for the G/B archetype. We made all that ramp, but we haven't made much to ramp into so far. I kinda wish we could make a rare G/B Hydra that comes into play with something like 10 minus X counters on it or something like this....
Lurking Monstrosity
Creature - Hydra
Trample, menace
Lurking Monstrosity enters the battlefield with 10 minus X -1/-1 counters on it.
, Remove a -1/-1 counter from Lurking Monstrosity : Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature.
10/10
I'm not sure how balanced that is, but you get the idea.
Edit2: Does anybody want to make the last couple of UC's? If not, I'll post some ideas in another day or so.

Made a mirror pair of brotherhood affiliated positive equipment at uncommon. When will we start playtesting? I know R&D playtests a lot with commons only.
As you can see from my last few posts, I have already begun playtesting on my own a bit. As I've said before, I'm not positive I will be able to playtest on Cockatrice. I suppose I could try to download it tonight and see what I can figure out. If anybody else wants to playtest without me on Cockatrice (or any other way) while I try to figure it out, please feel free, but keep me posted on the results.
Edit: BTW @scrad...you have 2 cards at UC in blue that are very redundant with already existing cards, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on these cards. The cards are Loyal Serpent and Camp Wall.
Edit2: Is it too much of a rip off to have a rare cycle of enchantments that have you choose Brotherhood or Rebellion? Maybe it could be a cycle of creatures with that option instead?
At this point, I would rather finish up the UC's, then move onto the rares and MR's before we playtest. I would like to get the whole set printed out and draft it a few times with some friends. I suppose we could draft with no rares or MR's, but I would like to keep moving with the set. We can always go back and fix things. I ask that everybody on the team goes through the list as is, and addresses the remaining questions. I would love to shore up the loose ends we have now before creating more.

I would like everybody of us to read today's article by Maro, which is very relevant to our set, as it's all about building a set around a two-sided conflict, just like our Brotherhood vs Rebellion one.
I'll check the sheet either later today or at last tomorrow.

I read the article you recommended bravelion. I think we've done a pretty good job thus far on what he is talking about. What do you think?
I think Elite Peacekeeper and Brotherhood Arrester should swap rarities. I'm probably just going to do this myself if I don't hear anything to the contrary.
As far as the recent lack of activity, I've been waiting for people to address the few issues I've brought up at C & UC, but other than that, I'm ready to make some rares. Since nobody seems to be addressing those issues, I guess we can just start making some rares. I added The Rack at rare, but it is traditionally an UC. I feel like it would probably be a rare these days (it was a "special" in TS). What do others think? I love The Rack for this set and want to fit it somewhere.

I wasn't bringing up the fact that it was a special because I thought that made it a rare, I just mentioned it because the only version of it we have in Modern doesn't have a specified rarity. Rare seems right to me though. I could be wrong, but it looks like scrad at least agrees.

No way The Rack would be uncommon today. It just has to be rare.
I also think we've done a good work, the only thing I'm not sure about is the last point MaRo brings up. Do we have enough synergy between the factions so that a player can mix up cards from the two opposite sides and still have a functional deck (even if maybe slightly worse)?
Oh, I forgot a clarification I wanted to make. I don't know if any of you were already playing at the time of Time Spiral, but I was (started with original Ravnica), so I remember what was going on. "Special" in Time Spiral just means that card was part of the timeshifted subset. All cards in it had the same rarity, regardless of the rarity they had in their previous printings, and you could find one replacing a common in any pack, kind of like the BFZ Expeditions. Thus, the "special" rarity in Time Spiral has no effect on what rarity the card would have today. The TSP timeshifted cards included cards that would normally be common (for example Squire) and cards that would be mythic (for example Akroma, Angel of Wrath) at the same time and the same rarity. It's a precedent that you should not consider when deciding what rarity the card would be today.

I seem to have caused confusion by pointing out that The Rack was a special. I only brought that up to say that, although The Rack is legal in Modern, there is no established precedent for it's rarity.
I'm leaving for NYC to go to the Mets' playoff game tonight. I'll be back tomorrow night, but will not be active again until then. Let's try to shore up the uncommons and start on the rares by Thursday if possible.

I'm about to do just that. I've added all missing flavor texts and I think the only thing we are missing is a replacement for Wall Camp, which I'm working on right now. Then I'll post updated renders for all the uncommons in the Drive render folder, and then I think we'll be ready to start designing rares. That will all happen in a very short time. I think tomorrow we'll already be able to begin rares, maybe even already tonight.

The render's look good! Thanks bravelion! It looks like we are about just about ready to move onto the rares. I do have a few more things....
I think I might just leave Brotherhood Arrester and Elite Peacekeeper where they are. I'd be curious to hear other's opinions on these 2 cards. Maybe I'm worried about nothing.
Please see the comments section in the spreadsheet for the following cards...Looming Hoverguard, Venak Recycler, Wilderness Channeler and Father's Sword.
I'm still not sure if I want to replace Ratillion Ritual with a Drain Life type spell. I kind of like the Ritual. What do others think? I have thought of a few black X spells that I think it would fit at rare also, so maybe we don't need one at UC.
I added a white rare to the spreadsheet, but it was mostly to help while making the decision on Father's Sword and Shield.
Edit: Also see the comments section for Suppress. I knew I was forgetting one.

I have only very briefly read through the blog and some of the posts here so please let me know if you have already discussed this, but isn't Brainwash creating unnecessary combat math that can be avoided? Your current version is: Brainwash (Whenever this deals damage to a creature, if that creature isn't brainwashed, put a -1/-1 counter on that creature and it becomes brainwashed.)
However this secretly gives all your brainwashing creatures +1 power in a similar manner to Kolaghan Aspirant. So I propose we try and transfer this board complexity to comprehension complexity so that a 3/3 does die to a 2/1 brainwasher creature. This also has the upside of making the cards seem more powerful due to having a larger P/T.
My version: Brainwash (Whenever this deals damage to a non-brainwashed creature, the first point of damage is dealt in the form of a -1/-1 counter and that creature becomes brainwashed.) Alt version: Brainwash (Whenever this deals damage to a non-brainwashed creature, it deals 1 of that damage in the form of a -1/-1 counter and the creature becomes brainwashed.)
Those points are very reasonable, and thank you for that. Yes, we already realized it essentially gives the creature one more point of power. Your proposed versions, to me, look like they decrease board complexity but increase comprehension completixy. They don't seem easier to understand than what we currently have. I'd like to test first with the current version, and if we see the board complexity is indeed too much, than we can always revert to another version like those you propose later. We aren't at the point of full playtest yet, Flatline had a couple playtests but that's all the testing we got for now. We definitely need more.

Be aware it isn't just board complexity but actually tracking complexity which is the most dangerous type of complexity due to being able to lead to feel bad moments or decision paralysis. Especially as this is a keyword mechanic the comprehension complexity should be able to fit in the set's complexity budget. This is doubly true as non of your other mechanics are hugely difficult to understand.

Excellent! I'm glad to hear your friends had a positive initial reaction to brainwash. Please keep in mind that the Ministers are not necessarily finished cards. I am waiting until we get to the MR's until I look at them again, but at the very least, I'm pretty sure the blue one will change considerably.
Made a few comments in the sheet. I'd really like to lock uncommons closing the few remaining conflicts and pass to rares as soon as possible.
I totally agree. I'll try to take a good look at the UC spreadsheet tonight to see what's left. I can't make any promises though, a lot of my hobby time lately has been taken up with the Mets being in the playoffs. Let's go Mets! I did already respond to some of your comments though, and also commented on scrad's new rares.

Thank you for taking the time to look at our set Doombringer. I have a great deal of respect for your knowledge, and think your insight can only help to make our set better. Feel free to keep it coming. I will try to a post a more in depth response to your thoughts after the Mets game tonight, if it's not too late. At the latest I will do so Saturday (tomorrow's volleyball/Magic night for me, perhaps I'll get a chance to do some more testing myself ).

Yes its both great and annoying that there are so many sweet projects that I can't look at all of them in detail. You guys should hop on the custommagic IRC channel sometime if you ever want more opinions on the project.
Hold on with rares! We still have a few things to decide on uncommons:
• What about the blue drone? I'll probably change it because I just had an idea that we should agree on better.
• What about the green Wilderness Channeler? Do we want to make it embolden 1?
• Which version of Dahl's Shield/Sword do we want to use?
• EDIT: Oh, and of course there is always this:
I think Elite Peacekeeper and Brotherhood Arrester should swap rarities. I'm probably just going to do this myself if I don't hear anything to the contrary.
I personally have nothing against the swap.
Once solved these points, then we can think about rares.

Kunfar Instigator
Creature - Viashino Rebel Warrior (R)
Haste
Recruit - Whenever another nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, that creature gains haste until end of turn.
Not a lot of action lately...
I'll check the sheet either later today or at last tomorrow.

EDIT: I've updated the uncommon render folder.

My version: Brainwash (Whenever this deals damage to a non-brainwashed creature, the first point of damage is dealt in the form of a -1/-1 counter and that creature becomes brainwashed.)
Alt version: Brainwash (Whenever this deals damage to a non-brainwashed creature, it deals 1 of that damage in the form of a -1/-1 counter and the creature becomes brainwashed.)

Excellent! I'm glad to hear your friends had a positive initial reaction to brainwash. Please keep in mind that the Ministers are not necessarily finished cards. I am waiting until we get to the MR's until I look at them again, but at the very least, I'm pretty sure the blue one will change considerably.
Are you designing commons? Check out my primer on NWO.
Interested in making a custom set? Check out my Set skeleton and archetype primer.
I also write articles about getting started with custom card creation.
Go and PLAYTEST your designs, you will learn more in a single playtests than a dozen discussions.

Exodus of Zendikar - ON HOLD
• What about the blue drone? I'll probably change it because I just had an idea that we should agree on better.
• What about the green Wilderness Channeler? Do we want to make it embolden 1?
• Which version of Dahl's Shield/Sword do we want to use?
• EDIT: Oh, and of course there is always this:
I personally have nothing against the swap.
Once solved these points, then we can think about rares.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
