Hello again people! Well, it's been a long while since I last posted here. I took a long break from making sets, and in the meantime I fell in love with crafting cubes for drafting (still gathering cards for my fourth cube), so one day it struck me that I really, really should design a cube of custom cards.
My first attempt was set on a plane called Elandria, and I didn't really go too far with it (I might revisit the project some other day). Then I turned to revisit an old project: Beyond the Guildpact. The 'Beyond the Guildpact' block had already gone through two iterations, both more than halfway to completion but I never found the impetus to finish it (you can still find remnants of the sets in this forum). But I finally have.
Some points to note before we look at the set:
- If the power level is a little wonky, it's because the cards are designed to operate within a cube. Cards like Ancient Plan would be broken beyond belief anywhere else.
- There are only two rarities: 'Common' (two copies exist in the cube) and 'Uncommon' (only one copy exists in the cube). Duplicates count towards the total of 420 cards.
- I'm mainly looking for comments and critique with regards to the cohesiveness of the set, or if there's some essential card effect that I missed. I'll be printing it out for testing in my group soon and will update as it goes along.
The setting of Beyond the Guildpact is Ravnica, 1000 years after the events in the original Ravnica block. Following the death of the Living Guildpact a new covenant was formed between the guilds. Over the years the boundaries between guilds have weakened, allegiances have shifted, etc. Basically we're looking at a very different world compared to the Ravnica we're familiar with a millennium ago. Our story begins when a human boy called Marven, originating from our world, ignited his spark while being delivered a crushing loss in a Magic tournament.

This is a nice bunch of cards. If I didn't comment on a card below, that's because I think it's ayokay
Spawn doesn't fit Magic in the broad sense. It works as part of a card name but not rules text mainly because it's too flavor concise. If you're bent on condensing "put a n/n color creature type token onto the battlefield" into one word, I suggest "summon". It would fit Magic's overall flavor and be a nice nod to Magic's past.
Grain Harvester - The flavor of the name doesn't jive with Ravnica's urban setting.
Mutant Crackdown - I really like the flavor of this.
Perimeter Module - What is the flavor of this? It seems way out of Ravnica's fantasy tek range.
Skyrider Patrol - I've considered and reconsidered putting a 3/3 white flyer for 3W at common. It seems like uncommon material or lazy design power creep common. So I haven't done it. Is it actually okay though? I really don't know. How do you justify it? HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT!?
Aerial Courier - This is nice. The name is bland. Messenger Hawk?
Biologist's Claim - If your set had rares, this would be rare. If you want a true uncommon, it should just cantrip.
Cloudwisp - Shouldn't this also grant flying to enchanted creature?
I find that 'Spawn' is probably the best candidate for 'put a X creature token onto the battlefield' so far. 'Summon' is great, though as you mentioned, it's been used in the past. I think it's a mix between the two; it feels better to Summon Angels and Krakens, but Spawn Saprolings and Zombies.
Grain Harvester - Someone needs to grow Ravnica's food somewhere Name changed to Grain Hauler.
Perimeter Module - All of neo-Azorius's creatures are named 'X Module'. I imagine them to be magical versions of giant robots. Art-wise they'd look something the totem armors of Rise of the Eldrazi but a lot more artificial.
Skyrider Patrol - This started out as a 1/3 for 1W, but I felt white needed a more aggro push. I'm a little iffy on this and expect to see this drop to 3/2 after the first draft with the cube. Really hope this can be 3/3 though.
Aerial Courier - Messenger Hawk sounds good
Biologist's Claim - I agree it's a little weird to see legendary creatures and planeswalkers at uncommon. I agonized over set size and rarities for quite a while before settling down on 2 copies of common and 1 copy of everything else. I needed the variety of cards and at the same time a manageable cube size. You're right that in another set this would be a rare.

My first attempt was set on a plane called Elandria, and I didn't really go too far with it (I might revisit the project some other day). Then I turned to revisit an old project: Beyond the Guildpact. The 'Beyond the Guildpact' block had already gone through two iterations, both more than halfway to completion but I never found the impetus to finish it (you can still find remnants of the sets in this forum). But I finally have.
Some points to note before we look at the set:
- If the power level is a little wonky, it's because the cards are designed to operate within a cube. Cards like Ancient Plan would be broken beyond belief anywhere else.
- There are only two rarities: 'Common' (two copies exist in the cube) and 'Uncommon' (only one copy exists in the cube). Duplicates count towards the total of 420 cards.
- I'm mainly looking for comments and critique with regards to the cohesiveness of the set, or if there's some essential card effect that I missed. I'll be printing it out for testing in my group soon and will update as it goes along.
The setting of Beyond the Guildpact is Ravnica, 1000 years after the events in the original Ravnica block. Following the death of the Living Guildpact a new covenant was formed between the guilds. Over the years the boundaries between guilds have weakened, allegiances have shifted, etc. Basically we're looking at a very different world compared to the Ravnica we're familiar with a millennium ago. Our story begins when a human boy called Marven, originating from our world, ignited his spark while being delivered a crushing loss in a Magic tournament.

Beyond the Guildpact
Spawn doesn't fit Magic in the broad sense. It works as part of a card name but not rules text mainly because it's too flavor concise. If you're bent on condensing "put a n/n color creature type token onto the battlefield" into one word, I suggest "summon". It would fit Magic's overall flavor and be a nice nod to Magic's past.
Grain Harvester - The flavor of the name doesn't jive with Ravnica's urban setting.
Mutant Crackdown - I really like the flavor of this.
Perimeter Module - What is the flavor of this? It seems way out of Ravnica's fantasy tek range.
Skyrider Patrol - I've considered and reconsidered putting a 3/3 white flyer for 3W at common. It seems like uncommon material or lazy design power creep common. So I haven't done it. Is it actually okay though? I really don't know. How do you justify it? HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT!?
Aerial Courier - This is nice. The name is bland. Messenger Hawk?
Biologist's Claim - If your set had rares, this would be rare. If you want a true uncommon, it should just cantrip.
Cloudwisp - Shouldn't this also grant flying to enchanted creature?
Where's the other 400 cards?
I find that 'Spawn' is probably the best candidate for 'put a X creature token onto the battlefield' so far. 'Summon' is great, though as you mentioned, it's been used in the past. I think it's a mix between the two; it feels better to Summon Angels and Krakens, but Spawn Saprolings and Zombies.
Grain Harvester - Someone needs to grow Ravnica's food somewhere Name changed to Grain Hauler.
Perimeter Module - All of neo-Azorius's creatures are named 'X Module'. I imagine them to be magical versions of giant robots. Art-wise they'd look something the totem armors of Rise of the Eldrazi but a lot more artificial.
Skyrider Patrol - This started out as a 1/3 for 1W, but I felt white needed a more aggro push. I'm a little iffy on this and expect to see this drop to 3/2 after the first draft with the cube. Really hope this can be 3/3 though.
Aerial Courier - Messenger Hawk sounds good
Biologist's Claim - I agree it's a little weird to see legendary creatures and planeswalkers at uncommon. I agonized over set size and rarities for quite a while before settling down on 2 copies of common and 1 copy of everything else. I needed the variety of cards and at the same time a manageable cube size. You're right that in another set this would be a rare.
