The set is designed in the spirit of Rise of the Eldrazi. Slow gameplay, giant creatures and many mana sinks. You should be able to play 10+ mana creatures and they should be good!
Swallow(Each creature you sacrifice while casting this spell pays for 1 or one mana of that creature’s color.)
Replaces the Eldrazi Spawn mechanic from Rise of the Eldrazi.
Bloodlust X(Whenever this creature deals combat damage, put X +1/+1 counters on it.)
The mechanic for sharks and the like.
Talisman(If equipped creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Equipment.)
Similar to Totem Armor, except this is used on equipments.
Melody {mana}(While casting a creature spell, you may tap this to pay for {mana}. This doesn’t untap during your untap steps for as long as you control that creature.)
The ability of the nixie race.
Level up: Returning from Rise of the Eldrazi.
Duet: As long as you control exactly two creatures, {effect}.
The seahorse mechanic.
Color matters: For obvious reasons, flying will not appear in the set. Instead, blockability revolves entirely around colors. Intimidate and other mechanics that restrict the creatures able to block based on color will appear as well as abilities that change creature's colors. However, the set will not focus on having color-based synergy like Shadowmoor.
Power 8 or greater matters: The theme for the naga race.
0/1 Fish tokens: Many cards generate 0/1 Fish tokens that are all colors.
Humanoid races:
(G/W)Nixies: Female human upper body and fish tail (classical mermaids). (W/U)Merfolk: Fish-human people (D&D Merfolk). (U/B)Naga: Human upper body and kraken tentacles instead of legs. (B/R)Murlocs (R/G)Elementals: Sentient water elementals. Long, fish-like body.
Non-humanoid races:
W Whales, Walrures, Seahorses U Turtles, Fish, Leviathans, Kraken B Leviathans, Kraken, Horrors R Sharks, Elementals G Turtles, Fish, Serpents, Seahorses
88 commons: 15 cards of each color, 5 allied-color hybrid cards, 7 artifacts, 1 land.
55 uncommons: 8 cards of each color, 5 allied-color hybrid cards, 8 artifacts, 2 lands.
45 rares: 5 cards of each color, 10 multicolor cards, 4 artifacts, 6 lands.
12 mythics: 5 cards of each color, 1 hybrid card, 3 multicolor cards, 1 artifact, 1 land, 1 additional blue card.
Wow, I just looked at a few cards and they seem really really good.
One comment: I think the cost for the eye should be 6.
Edit: Pearlreef mystic should be an uncommon.

Thank you.
Idk, Gilded Lotus gives you 3 mana repeatable for 5, that's on the same power level as 5 mana once I think.
You're probably right on Pearlreef Mystic. I'll note it for now, because I want at least one "power 8 or greater matters" card at common and these effects must of course be more powerful because you won't trigger them that often, but still...
Two more Melody cards:
Coralia Basscaller :2mana::symg::symg:
Creature — Mermaid Shaman (U)
Melody :1mana::symg: (You may tap this to reduce the cost of a creature card you cast by :1mana::symg:. This doesn’t untap during your untap steps for as long as you control that creature.)
When Coralia Basscaller enters the battlefield, put a 3/3 green Fish creature token onto the battlefield.
0/1
Singing Cliffs
Land (U)
:symtap:: Add to your mana pool.
Melody (You may tap this to reduce the cost of a creature card you cast by :2mana:. This doesn’t untap during your untap steps for as long as you control that creature.)
Melody is cool! I feel like it has some memory issues, though. What if,
Melody X (Tap: Add X to your mana pool. Use this only to cast a single creature spell. If that card enters the battlefield, exile this card. When that card leaves the battlefield, return this card to the battlefield.)

which is like sort of backwards champion, I guess
I thought about that too, but wouldn't it invoke the flavor that your guy gets eaten by the creature? I feel like the memory issues are about as bad as with soulbond, and that worked out okish I guess? (only drafted AVR on MTGO, not on paper)
What I don't like about the mechanic is that it's a bit restrictive on what you can use the mana for. I'd like to include activated abilities of creatures (I still want something like Levelers), but the reminder text would become a monstrosity :Psyduck:.
New cards:
Drowned Geist :symwu::symwu:
Creature — Spirit (C)
:1mana:, :symtap:: You may tap or untap target creature with power 3 or less.
1/2
Nolgul :8mana::symu::symu::symu::symu::symu::symu:
Legendary Creature — Kraken Avatar (M)
Nolgul can’t be countered.
Swallow, protection from noncreature
Whenever Nolgul enters the battlefield or attacks, gain control of target creature.
If Nolgul would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Nolgul and shuffle it into its owner’s library instead.
12/12
OP and .pdf also updated.
I got a bit of a designer's block last few days. If anyone has some cards to suggest, go for it!
I thought about that too, but wouldn't it invoke the flavor that your guy gets eaten by the creature? I feel like the memory issues are about as bad as with soulbond, and that worked out okish I guess? (only drafted AVR on MTGO, not on paper)
Well, with soulbound presumably you put your critters together so you know they're buddies.
I would think that with Swallow in the same set, you'd have filled the 'eating' mechanical headspace already. I guess you could use a counter mechanic as well? This could be ugly but...
Melody X
- ~ enters the battlefield with a song counter on it.
- tap, remove a song counter: add X to your mana pool
- as long as ~ has no song counters it does not untap
- when a creature with a song counter on it ltb, you can move the song counter onto ~
I suppose that you could just leave the memory solution to the players, but your current implementation definitely has some questionable results when it comes into contact with untapping effects.
For your mana sink, having some common invokers would really help a lot. To differentiate from Onslaught and RoE ones, maybe they can have as their schtick to grant abilities to creature instead of having abilities that only affect them (Onslaught) or the whole board (RoE).
The blue one could give creatures the ability to change their colors (including becoming colorless) and gain +X/+X (for some fixed X), the black one could give +X/-X, the red one +X/+0 and haste, the green one +X/+X and fight and the white one +X/+X and lifelink or vigilance.
I'll definitely have some invokeresque creatures. I'll try to keep the abilities different from the ones from ROE. I thought of:
White: Creatures you control get +2/+2 until EOT.
Red: Gain control of creature until EOT.
Blue: Creatures opponents control get -5/-0 until EOT.
Green and Black, don't know yet. The green one should definitely be less powerful than Wildheart Invoker. That card was just insane. I don't want green end up being the superior color again.
But I still need another mana sink mechanic, invokers won't suffice. I might just do levelers, because I'm ok with the set being a reimagination of Rise of the Eldrazi and it would give the opportunity to do multicolor levelers.

Yeah, that's really not pretty. Anyway, even if the mechanic doesn't use counters, that shouldn't prevent players from using dice or whatever if they feel like it would help them.
I wanted to make some untap effects in the set to go with the mechanic. That could become confusing if a creature is "melodying" multiple creatures, but I'm willing to try it out (maybe just flicker to make the creature forget it's melodying something).
So, I've made some thoughts about how I want to distribute the mechanics:
Fish tokens: UR, secondary W.
Melody: GW
Swallow: BR, secondary GU
Bloodlust: R, secondary BG
I'll remove Fish tokens from green, as they already have Melody and I don't want to have green be the superior color like it has been in ROE. Having Fish tokens in different colors than Swallow encourages some multicolor play. White will not get Swallow, but a token theme and black can get some '~ dies'-triggers to go with Swallow.
Second, I don't like the interaction that you can Swallow away a creature with Melody and thereby "cheat" the downside. I don't know exactly how to prevent that, as you can always pay costs in any order. It would have to be hard-defined into the ability, which is very unelegant.
Some new cards:
Eversong Scallop :1mana::symw:
Creature — Clam (U)
Defender
Melody (You may tap this to reduce the cost of a creature card you cast by :symw:. This doesn’t untap during your untap steps for as long as you control that creature.)
When Eversong Scallop enters the battlefield, draw a card.
0/2
Ctali Warmonger :3mana::symu:
Creature — Naga Warrior (C)
Intimidate (This creature can’t be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a color with it.)
2/4
Abyssal Bolt :3mana::symb:
Instant (C)
Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn and you gain 2 life. Naga have at least that much respect for mermaids that they wouldn’t use them as target practice. Murlocs on the other hand...
Ctaleth :8mana::symb::symb::symb::symb::symb:
Legendary Creature — Kraken Avatar (M)
Ctaleth can’t be countered.
Swallow, protection from monocolored
Whenever Ctaleth enters the battlefield or attacks, you get an emblem with “Creatures your opponents control get -1/-1.”
If Ctaleth would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Ctaleth and shuffle it into its owner’s library instead.
11/11
Rampaging Hammerhead :3mana::symr::symr:
Creature — Fish (U)
First strike
Bloodlust 2 (Whenever this creature deals combat damage, put two +1/+1 counters on it.)
2/2
Grazing Plesodons :4mana::symg:
Creature — Serpent (C)
Swallow (Each creature you sacrifice while casting this spell reduces its cost by or one mana of that creature’s color.)
3/5
Murloc Marauders :2mana::symbr::symbr::symbr:
Creature — Murloc Berserker (C)
Murloc Marauders can’t be blocked by creatures that share a color with it.
4/3
Haunted Shipwrack
Artifact (U)
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a 2/2 black Zombie Pirate creature token onto the battlefield, then Haunted Shipwrack loses this ability for as long as you control that creature.
You could have Swallow require that the sacrificed creature be untapped; if you sac it in an untapped state there's no way you can trick it into becoming tapped for Melody before it hits the yard.
But honestly I think this is a much bigger problem than that; any time that you have multiple cost-reduction effects in play, things get ugly.
That would be a reasonable change. It leads to some weird interactions on other fields though, like with Narcolepsy-like cards. Have to keep it in mind when designing these cards.
You know what, I retract my prior statement: You don't have to worry about the interaction as long as you define both Melody and Swallow as alternate costs due to 601.2b:
601.2b If the spell is modal the player announces the mode choice (see rule 700.2). If the player wishes to splice any cards onto the spell (see rule 702.45), he or she reveals those cards in his or her hand. If the spell has alternative or additional costs that will be paid as it's being cast such as buyback, kicker, or convoke costs (see rules 117.8 and 117.9), the player announces his or her intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 601.2e). A player can't apply two alternative methods of casting or two alternative costs to a single spell.
Anemone Gobbler :3mana::symw:
Creature — Fish Beast (C)
Vigilance
Anemone Gobbler enters the battlefield tapped.
2/4

-8: Tap up to eight target permanents. Those permanents don’t untap during their controller’s next eight untap steps.

Blackreef Angler :3mana::symb::symb:
Creature — Fish Horror (R)

Sorcery (C)
Swallow (Each creature you sacrifice while casting this spell reduces its cost by or one mana of that creature’s color.)

I heard cards are pretty good when you're trying to make a set.

0/3
Lord of Ctalis :1mana::symu::symb:

Cards and cards! Some murlocs, token makers and a few more talisman.
I have the feeling that the talisman are kinda meh - they should probably give a minor stat boost like +1/+0 or +0/+1. The problem is when the stat bonus is so large that you'd rather want the creature to die instead of the Equipment - that would make people upset about the mechanic (for example a +3/+0 would allow you to continually throw tokens into your opponent as long as you keep the Equipment around). Their upside is of course that you never get two-for-oned.
Ticking Trinket is probably a good card though. Got the idea after I watched this game. That was kinda brutal!
Next update I'll focus on mana sinks. I could do levelers, but these would interfere with the +1/+1 counters in the set (though after some card changes that wouldn't be a problem). They should also be a bit different than in ROE (artifact, multicolor, off-color or hybrid levelers), but I haven't come up with good ideas yet.
A mechanic similar to Scavenge would also work and go well with the sacrifice theme. However, playing with RTR the last weeks, I find that Scavenge isn't that interesting and also not very effective as a mana sink. Scavenging onto intimidate creatures would also be a very effective strategy and would make the format more aggressive than I'd want.
Anyway, your thoughts are welcome. The updates:
Luminous Blast
Instant (C)
Luminous Blast deals 3 damage to target attacking creature. That creature becomes all colors until end of turn. “Our lumomancers’ spells couldn’t kill it, but they gave our warriors at least a target they could see.”
—Expedition journal entry
Shoal Sentry :4mana::symw:
Creature — Beast (C)
When Shoal Sentry enters the battlefield, put two 0/1 Fish creature tokens that are all colors onto the battlefield.
2/4
Blackreef Murloc

Creature — Merfolk Shaman (C)
Haste
When Merfolk Jellydancer enters the battlefield, put a 0/1 Fish creature token that’s all colors onto the battlefield.
2/2
Lady Kaladrin :3mana::symu::symb:
Legendary Creature — Naga Wizard (M)
Whenever Lady Kaladrin blocks or becomes blocked by a nonartifact creature, that creature becomes a colorless artifact.
:1mana::symu:: Target creature attacks and blocks this turn if able. “The barrier has been breached. The overworld is ripe for the taking.”
5/4
Cephali Signet
Artifact — Equipment (C)
Equipped creature has vigilance.
Talisman (If equipped creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Equipment.)
Equip (:1mana:: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)
Ticking Trinket
Artifact — Equipment (U)
Equipped creature has haste.
Talisman (If equipped creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Equipment.)
Equip (:0mana:: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)
Throne of the Urkraken
Legendary Land (M)
:symtap:: Add to your mana pool.
:4mana:, :symtap:, Sacrifice Throne of the Urkraken: Search your library for a Kraken, Leviathan or Serpent creature card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library. In eons Kalimaras dwelt in the overworld, these chambers served as his throne.
I'm in a card crit mood today. I'm looking at this totally blind - not going to bother to read the mechanics yet. This allows me to view the set from an outsider perspective.
Luminous Blast: The second clause is really random. What are you trying to do? Feels like hot glue gun design, but reads weird in a vacuum. This is relevant.
Quote from Mark Rosewater »
One of the best tests to see if you're integrating your theme seamlessly is to take a look at the card out of context. If this card was shown to someone, does it look like just a card or does it look like a card trying to fill a void. This card screams to me "I have a +1/+1 counter theme!" whereas a green instant that says "Put two +1/+1 counters on target creature" does not. This card feels like you needed to find more ways to use +1/+1 counters and does not feel like a natural extension.
Shoal Sentry: Really defensive, but OK. You have to make sure that your Limited environment isn't bogged down by creatures like this. It would be good if you have something like the Evokers or something so that creatures just won't be chumped by Fishes all day long.
Blackreef Murloc: My worry with this is that this will die easily and there'll be nothing to recur. Also, I remembered you commented on my Warcraft III set.
Battle Hymn: OK.
Bloodkelp Lumomancer: "you may have". This reminds me of prismatic. I'll repeat the maro quote above. I have something else I wanted to say but I forgot.
Merfolk Jellydancer: I like this card. When you play a creature with haste you usually debate attacking or leaving it behind.
Lady Kaladrin: Has strange flavor, would be better off as a Gorgon. You should have reminder text regarding the colorless artifact part - is it still a creature? Doesn't feel like a mythic to me IMO.
Cephali Signet: Change the name so that it's not like the mana rock. I like Talisman. It's relevant for limited. It's interesting to compare these to the Rings.
Ticking Trinket: Still nice. This is pretty strong, however, effectively a Fervor in 3 colorless. I know that Lightning Greaves was printed, but I would like to see a 1 equip. I know that it makes you sad and it makes me sad.
Throne of the Urkraken: Doesn't feel mythic to me. Other than that it's fine.
Well, I would take a look at the mechanics, but ok. A different point of view I guess :tongue:.
Luminous Blast: What is hot glue gun design? I don't have the context to understand that quote entirely. What was the card doing? Is the "Put two +1/+1 counters on target creature" card the one you should do or shouldn't?
The set has a color matters theme. Like in Shadowmoor, you had Crimson Wisps with the color clause that doesn't do much outside the block.
Shoal Sentry: There will be invokers, yes.
Blackreef Murloc: What happened to that set anyway?
Lady Kaladrin: Yes, it's no longer a creature. Will add the reminder text, but the card will see some change anyway I think. Naga is a main race in the set, gorgon's don't appear. Since Naga don't exist yet, I don't see the problem with giving them this ability.
Cephali Signet: What mana rock? The signets from Ravnica? Name can be changed of course, no big deal.
Ticking Trinket: Well, Fervor is a terrible card and a better comparison would be in fact Lightning Greaves. It protects the creature and gives haste.
Throne of the Urkraken: Could also be a rare, sure.
On Luminous Blast: Hot glue gun design is stapling two basic effects together to make a card. Also, the card was something like "Whenever this land becomes tapped, put a +1/+1 counter on an opponent's creature". It was an Enchant land aura for your opponent's lands.
The "put two +1/+1 counters" thing is what you should do. Regarding the card, will you really use this card to ping your own creature or something to turn on your color matters cards? I feel like there are better ways to use this effect, like "Prevent X damage to a creature you control, that creature becomes all colors" etc.
Shoal Sentry:
Blackreef Murloc: I finally found my old copy of Warcraft III two months ago and I've been enjoying it a lot. I was thinking of revisiting that set. I couldn't comment on the comments because I was swamped with homework that time, but if you look at the Google Doc I made some changes and added some Naga.
Lady Kaladrin: Yeah, I guess you're right. It IS pretty gorgon-ish, however.
Cephali Signet: This shouldn't collide from the Ravnica signets.
Ticking Trinket: What do you feel about the 1 equip?
Throne: OK.
----
Forgotten Glory: Token making usually isn't instant, but white is the color most likely to get instant token making. This feels bad if you're attacking because the fishes don't have haste. It's fine for blocking, however - just pointing that out.
Hideaway: This card is nice and has decent flavor.
Put on Leash: I'm not sure how much intimidate you're going to have in the set, but this is environment dependent. I don't really like this card because it's very swingy - if your opponent doesn't have any intimidate then this card is a cantrip and if he or she does then this card devastates.
Deephollow Leviathan: Remove hexproof or trample, maybe both or maybe make it weaker. This is too strong for common with swallow. I can see this on a rare.
Noble of Blood Bottom: Yet another quote.

2/2
Whenever you sacrifice a creature, you may gain 2 life.
Quote from Mark Gottlieb »
I love cards like this (I'm a Johnny who enjoys sacrificing my own creatures for fun and profit), but there's no way this should be common. Exactly three cards in history have had a "whenever you sacrifice (something)" trigger; one was rare and two were uncommon. This weird line of text is just egregious on a common, especially in a set in which you need two other cards to make it work (since there are no creatures that sacrifice themselves here), and sacrificing isn't even a particularly prominent theme (sure, there's consume, but those are one-shot spell effects and you're not going to pay the additional cost all the time).
Magma Dwellers: Colorshifting the WW Intimidate Knight - fine.
Temple Guard: Reminds me of Ogre Jailbreaker. Might play out pretty board dominating, but that's fine.
Serpent's Herald: For some reason I really like this.
Lord of Ctalis: I like this card as well. Well-designed cool lords make me happy.
Warchief of Grglmar: I don't think Bloodlust should have a parameter. Just say Bloodlust. Other than that it's fine.
Emerien Composer: I don't really like Melody. At first glance it feels too "binding". Why would you give your other Mermaids +1/+1 and Melody? Nonbo. I would probably say something like "creatures you control with melody untap during your untap step" or maybe something like "GW: Untap target Mermaid."
Kayisha: Can't crit 'walkers since they're too complex. This looks fine though. Would be sweet if you could make indestructible as instant speed.
The Abyssal City: I don't like these Eldrazi Titan-esque guys. They feel less splashy to me and feel like rip offs. I know we all love Battlecruiser Magic and Eldrazi, but these don't feel like big, jaw-dropping monstrosities the Titans were.
Warcraft III: You have to give me a link to the thread though, it's buried under twenty pages by now. Btw, maybe you're interested in a warcraft 3 map I made a few years ago :tongue:.
Luminous Blast: No, you're not supposed to ping your own creature. Being all colors allows intimidate creatures to be blocked by creatures of any color (that's why I would take a look at the mechanics). It's a downside.
Cephali Signet: Then I'll rename it to 'Seal of Coralia'.
Ticking Trinket: I feel like it would make the card more fair but much less exciting. (like every uncommon has to be fair (Skymark Roc *cough*))
Put on Leash: I cut this card since and replaced it with Luminous Blast. You read the updates I posted, but you can also look at the OP (text versions and images). Makes more sense.
Deephollow Leviathan: It should be on the same power level as Ulamog's Crusher. No idea if that's the case, just stating it.
Noble of Blood Bottom: Then I'll change it to "Whenever a creature dies, ...". Since it's not a permanent effect it shouldn't make much difference and also makes the card a bit better (it's not that good).
Lord of Ctalis: I think I'll add deathtouch though.
Warchief of Grglmar: There are uncommons with bloodlust 2 and I plan to go higher at rare.
Emerien Composer: Giving melody is really a bit nonbo since most have melody already anyway. I think of something else.
Kayisha: Made the token into a Llanowar elves. Don't think the race mechanic needs to be put on their planeswalker.
The Abyssal City: That's personal taste I guess. This one I don't like that much and I feel like I can find cooler abilities (having to do with being a city and such), but I think the others are great.
Cool to have you around in the thread :thumbsup:. I only hope it's not going to be advent when that Caeia guy returns :Psyduck:.

Overview
The set is designed in the spirit of Rise of the Eldrazi. Slow gameplay, giant creatures and many mana sinks. You should be able to play 10+ mana creatures and they should be good!
Swallow (Each creature you sacrifice while casting this spell pays for 1 or one mana of that creature’s color.)
Replaces the Eldrazi Spawn mechanic from Rise of the Eldrazi.
Bloodlust X (Whenever this creature deals combat damage, put X +1/+1 counters on it.)
The mechanic for sharks and the like.
Talisman (If equipped creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Equipment.)
Similar to Totem Armor, except this is used on equipments.
Melody {mana} (While casting a creature spell, you may tap this to pay for {mana}.
(G/W) Nixies: Female human upper body and fish tail (classical mermaids).
(W/U) Merfolk: Fish-human people (D&D Merfolk).
(U/B) Naga: Human upper body and kraken tentacles instead of legs.
(B/R) Murlocs
(R/G) Elementals: Sentient water elementals. Long, fish-like body.
Non-humanoid races:
W Whales, Walrures, Seahorses
U Turtles, Fish, Leviathans, Kraken
B Leviathans, Kraken, Horrors
R Sharks, Elementals
G Turtles, Fish, Serpents, Seahorses

One comment: I think the cost for the eye should be 6.
Edit: Pearlreef mystic should be an uncommon.
Thank you.
Idk, Gilded Lotus gives you 3 mana repeatable for 5, that's on the same power level as 5 mana once I think.
You're probably right on Pearlreef Mystic. I'll note it for now, because I want at least one "power 8 or greater matters" card at common and these effects must of course be more powerful because you won't trigger them that often, but still...
Two more Melody cards:
Coralia Basscaller :2mana::symg::symg:
Land (U)

Melody X (Tap: Add X to your mana pool. Use this only to cast a single creature spell. If that card enters the battlefield, exile this card. When that card leaves the battlefield, return this card to the battlefield.)
which is like sort of backwards champion, I guess
Thank you :).
New cards:
Drowned Geist :symwu::symwu:
Creature — Spirit (C)
:1mana:, :symtap:: You may tap or untap target creature with power 3 or less.
1/2
Watery Demise :symb::symb:
Instant (C)
Destroy target non-Kraken, non-Leviathan, non-Serpent creature.
Nolgul :8mana::symu::symu::symu::symu::symu::symu:

Eversong Scallop :1mana::symw:
Creature — Clam (U)
Defender
Melody (You may tap this to reduce the cost of a creature card you cast by :symw:. This doesn’t untap during your untap steps for as long as you control that creature.)
When Eversong Scallop enters the battlefield, draw a card.

Ctaleth :8mana::symb::symb::symb::symb::symb:

Luminous Blast: The second clause is really random. What are you trying to do? Feels like hot glue gun design, but reads weird in a vacuum. This is relevant.
