502.7a Protection is a static ability, written "Protection from [quality]." This quality is usually a color (as in "protection from
black") but can be any characteristic value.
The "characteristic value" can be some combination, like "multicolored," but it does have to be based on characteristics.
Of course, that rule could be changed, but it does exist.
Protcetion from cards
This is one that a rules change could make possible.
Protcetion from sources
This is not. It's too vague. What you would do is give it all of the abilities that such protection would imply:
(D) Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Enforcer of Law.
(E) Enforcer of Law can't be enchanted or equipped.
(B) Enforcer of Law can't be blocked.
(T) Enforcer of Law can't be the target of spells or abilities.

Protcetion from opponents.
Except, an "opponent" is never the source of damage, never an enchantment or equipment, never a blocker, and never the source or a targeted ability. It would do nothing.
I don't think "Protection from Cards" can be a valid ability.
For example, a creature card in your hand once it is in play is a Permanent - Creature, not a card as such [so boomerang effects do not say return card in play to hand but return permanent or specified permanent type].
Whilst in library, hand or graveyard they are cards - but they aren't doing anything until cast or activated, in which case they become a specific thing - like say an instant or sorcery or aura spell that could target a creature, but the concept of card would be too nebulous or general - for example, if targeted by ping ability of a Prodigal Sorcerer does protection from card operate; similar with attacking or blocking creatures.
Simpler and less confusing to give following abilities: 'Protection from permanents (or non-token creatures)' and 'Can not be the target of spells or abilities'.

Could you say "Protection from nontoken?" I don't know if that's a characteristic...I guess I doubt it.
And as long as we're hypothesizing, instead of "sources," try "Protection from objects." You will go far. Maybe.

Incorrect. A card is a card wherever it is. Boomerang is worded that way so it can bounce (and kill) my Roar of the Wurm token. There are examples of things in play being referred to as cards, but I can't think of 'em and Gatherer is of no help when I'm searching for "card." Protection from cards works. So does protection from nontokens, and it's actually a bit more comprehensive, protecting from copies of spells.

Many of those cards have been errated to say "nontoken permanent". Two examples are Bronze Tablet and the more recent Rishadan Pawnshop. Although I don't know enough about the rules to know whether this errata was just for clarity or rules-related.

The ability technically would work, but it woudn't do anything on a Sorcery. Protection works for permanents only. You can use Counterspell a Karoo Meerkat.
So what if I used "Cannot be the target of spells or abilities" on a instant or sorcery.
That would work. In fact, it's close enough to cards like Last Word to say it works the same way. But that isn't "protection," is it? The definition of protection says "A permanent with protection can't be targeted by spells with the stated quality and can't be targeted by abilities from a source with the stated quality." It doesn't apply to spells.
