I was tossing around an improved version of Suffocating Blast. A solid card, the requirement for 2 targets makes it pretty difficult to take advantage of....sooo, I thought this up.
Confusing Bolt :1mana::symu::symu::symr:
Instant
Counter target spell.
~ deals 3 damage to target creature or spell.
It would do exactly the same thing, except its always at least a counter spell.
Doing 3 damage to a spell doesn't do anything, at least that I'm aware of, but you could just target say a Wrath of God twice if need be.

But seriously, ~ deals 3 damage to up to one target creature is probably the best way to go. Wouldn't want Ertai's Trickery to become unbalanced after all, now would we!?
Rather than making a effect that must fail (damaging a spell), why not just make it modal?

Cause then you would never get both, unless we bring back entwine.
Did you even read the text I suggested? I got both, without entwine. I even made it more versatile, with the second mode, by letting you not try to counter a spell.
I always thought Suffocating Blast was blasting a creature, and that Blast itself caused such a great calamity that it consumed a spell.
So to preserve the flavour, I'd make it like this:
Suffocating Reprint 3R
Instant
~ deals 3 damage to target creature. That creature can't be regenerated this turn.
If you spent UU on ~, counter target spell.
It's a little weird, I know. You can target a spell to no effect if you don't spend U.
This is the only way to make it have like a "kicker" cost without being broken, since 3 damage needs 3 mana, and counter spell with no gimmicks needs UU

It would have to cost somewhere in the area of :2mana::symu::symu::symr: for it to be balanced. I was also just curious if that wording would work.
