Warden of Squirrels :4mana::symg::symg:
Creature - Elf (R)
Affinty for Squrriels
Kicker
When Warden of Squirrels comes into play, if you paid its kicker cost, put X 1/1 green squirrel creature token into play.
3/4
The one who helped me create this card wanted to have the Affinty cost reduce the kicker cost.
For example
You have six squirrels, and want to pay :symg::symg: to put six more squirrels into play with this.
I know it works better like
Warden of Squirrels :xmana::4mana::symg::symg:
Creature - Elf (R)
Affinty for Squrriels
When Warden of Squirrels comes into play, put X 1/1 green squirrel creature token into play.
3/4
And I'll probably just do it like this but I wanted to explore unused design space of older mechanics for my new set.
It seems sort of silly to ridicule a company for marketing efforts. Of course they are going to hype upcoming products, every company on the face of the planet does it, and it works, thats why they do it. There isn't really any sense complaining about it. If you don't like the marketing, ignore it.

It works.
Nothing in Magic "reduces costs." The effects you refer to "reduce what you have to pay" after you have added up all of the costs.
So, if you want X to be 5 in this case, it costs 4, plus 2 green, plus another 5; or 9::symg::symg:. Then you reduce that 1 for each squirrel you have.
The wording of kicker was changed from "if you paid" to "if the foo kicker cost was paid", as change-of-control issues occur when who "you" is (the person who played it, or the current controller) changes. It might not matter in this case, but you should still follow the given text.
Affinity can reduce costs besides the card's mana cost, so it can work in conjunction with kicker in the way you suspect. You might want to consider convoke, though, as affinity will always seem heavily artifact-related, and convoke very creature-related, which your cards obviously is.
X4GG is different from 4GG + kicker :xmana:, as some effects may reference specifically kicker costs. (Imagine kicker triggers: "Whenever another card comes into play, if its kicker cost was paid....")
Creatures with X in their costs generally rub Le Chat's fur the wrong way; kicker seems more proper in those cases. Your tastes may vary.

And for good reason, since the only existing permanent-creating spells with "X" in the mana cost use it in a replacement effect, that applies as the card is coming into play. The permanent itself does not know what that "X" is, but that replacement is applied while it is still a spell. For example, on Riptide Replicator, the "X" is different in the two abilities. The rules really don't explain how a triggered ability knows the "X," but it apparently does.
I almost explained this before, but I thought it was going too deep. But that's why I only commented on teh Kicker version.

Instant
Target spell or permanent's tone becomes playful.
