This Month we will be concentrating on some of the most common mistakes made by new and experienced custom magic card designers alike.
Each challenge will concentrate on a single issue, having us work to try and improve on these potential points of weakness and give us a better understanding on how to tackle these issues.
Everyone loves characters, they give us a perspective into the game, drive the needs of the narrative and effect great change that can be showcased in gameplay.
A huge amount of the recent popularity of magic and formats like EDH is tied to Planeswalkers and legendary characters that players can relate to.
So it should come as no surprise that players love to make legendary cards and planeswalkers to showcase their cool world or characters.
Unfortunately a lot of players are not great writers and are often not up to the developmental challenge of creating planeswalkers, thus you often see very low quality legendary characters and planeswalkers.
Thus we are gonna make a legendary creature and a planeswalker, both of which should be from a plane of your design.
Note: These challenges will now be getting more difficult, be sure to read the requirements carefully when submitting and judging.
So our challenge is Create two cards both of which should be from a plane of your design
One must be a Mythic Legendary creature from a new plane of your design.
The other design must be a Mythic Planeswalker from the same setting. It must be a different color identity to the legendary creature.
You may add a few sentences describing the context or characters of your two cards.

Feel free to ask questions if your unsure about anything in the Discussion Thread
Due Date: February 1st. Critique due date is the 4th
Both of my character originate from the plane of Ezeti, a desert-like plane steeped in Egyptian mythology. Pyramids, hieroglyphs, sphinx, and most importantly, slaves, are present on this plane. While this plane has a firm birth from the lore of ancient Egypt, my characters are drawn from the biblical story of Moses and Ramses.
Rymas, Tyrant King2UBR
Legendary Creature - Human (MR)
You control all Slaves. 4, T: Rymas deals 1 damage to target creature. That creature becomes a Slave in addition to it's other creature types.
Tap five untapped Slaves you control: Search your library for a permanent and put it onto the battlefield.
2/4
Rymas rules over all Slaves. Using his whip (and the whips of his slave drivers) he conscripts more and more people into his slave army. After has amassed enough man power, he can use his army to build whatever he wants.
Masos, Breaker of Chains1WU
Planeswalker - Masos (MR)
+1: Exile target creature, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
+1: Each player gains control of all creatures he or she owns. Until the beginning of your next turn, spells and permanents cannot leave their owner's control.
-7: Exile all creatures you don't control. Then return them to the battlefield under your control.
[3]
Masos is Rymas's brother who sees the wrong and fault of slavery. He has taken up the mantle to free every slave. As he becomes more renown for his slave freeing, he unsuspectingly becomes a king himself.
I had written this beautiful text when my browser quit..I'm so mad right now, spent 1h in that and went to waste
Radis is known by its major city, Farlabth, a city of commerce, where you can find scholars, mercenaries, artificers, traders, wizards, and so many other characters and/or activities. Less known is the remaining of Radis. The mountains in the north are ruled by goblins, that used to raid Farlabth. Since the Bloody Summer, though, Frieds, a group of brave and surviving cat warriors, control the border of Farlabth, keeping it safe from the raids. In the south there's a huge and flourishing forest, Kaith, but not much is known about it. Elves are yet to be seen, stories tell, but one can find Snakes, Trolls, Saprolings, Bears, and so many other types of fauna and flora. The mysteries of Kaith are not known yet, as not many adventure to enter it, and even less return from their trips.
Frieds was created by Jalai after the Bloody Summer, quickly gathering an army that could put an end to the misery of Farlabth. Jalai is one of the most influential and respected characters of Radis, and Frieds' captain. Many talk about the Bloody Summer, but what's history is the Red Cry, the turning point when goblins were finally defeated. Tales talk about a Shaman, who was leading the goblins in those raids, and screamed so loudly when he realized his defeat, immediately disappearing with no trail. Who believes these tales say his spark ignited and his disappearance was due to his first travel. And some swear he's back!
(this is nowhere near the quality of the previous text, but it's now 4am )
Jalai, Frieds' CaptainWW
Legendary Creature - Cat Warrior (MR)
First Strike
Whenever a creature you control blocks, you may pay 2. If you do, it gains indestructible until end of turn. 1WW: Put a 1/1 white Cat Warrior creature token with first strike onto the battlefield.
2/3
Mejer, the Red Cry1RR
Planeswalker - Mejer (MR)
+1: Put two 1/1 red Goblin tokens with haste onto the battlefield.
0: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal any number of Goblin cards from among them and put the revealed cards into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
-1: Goblin creatures you control get +1/+0 and gain menace until end of turn.

I'm still trying to write about these two characters in a clear and concise story that isn't 12 pages long, but I have a really tough time with brevity. Anyway, I'm done trying for now, but if we can get an extension to tomorrow night I hope to have something written up by then. If not.....
Screw it! This is barely proof read, I hope it makes some sense. Also, this is as short as I could make it.
Zanbae is a post-apocalyptic plane inhabited by a single tribe called the Eyodwa, or “The One”. The Eyodwa consists of all of Zanbae’s races; Goblins, Humans, Elves, Merfolk, etc., all living as one. Fearful of their war filled past that culminated with detonation of the great and powerful “death weapon”, the Eyodwa live a simple tribal life, rejecting violence and all but the most rudimentary tools. Nature and unity are at the heart of the Eyodwan way.
Things are not so easy for the Eyodwa though, the “death weapon” left behind toxic fallout that has affected the plane ever since its detonation. The fallout causes great sickness and horrible mutations among the inhabitants of the plane. Through all this, the Eyodwan elders have managed to find uncontaminated ground and drinking water, and have managed to keep many of the Eyodwans from succumbing to the sickness. The animal inhabitants have not been so lucky though. Many of them have undergone strange and sometimes horrific mutations. Life for the Eyodwa is a constant struggle against their environment and the horrible mutated beasts that live within it.
Rin was just 9 years old when the “death weapon” was detonated. At the exact moment of its detonation, Rin’s planeswalker spark ignited and he planeswalked away to the plane of Denear. There he was found lying unconscious by a hermit named Drath, who took Rin back to his humble home. When Rin finally awoke, he had no memory of his past, nor any knowledge of the planeswalker spark that he possessed. Not knowing what to do with the boy, Drath brought Rin to some shaman elders that he knew in the nearest village. The elders immediately recognized a great power within Rin, and began to train the boy in their ways. They named him Ultarn, and there Rin stayed for the next 25 years or so, growing into one of the most powerful shamans on Denear.
One day Rin’s village was visited by a blue aligned planeswalker named Tuturri. Tuturri immediately recognized the planeswalker spark within Rin and began to work with him to master his powers. While working with Tuturri, Rin slowly began to regain some of the memories from his early life on Zanbae. When Rin began to tell Tuturri of these memories, he was surprised to find that Tuturri was aware of the events that transpired on Zanbae. He told Rin that no planeswalker had been to Zanbae since the detonation of the “death weapon”. Scholars across the multiverse were sure that visiting the toxic wasteland was a one way ticket to death. Rin decided he would find out for himself if that was really the case, so late one night, he planeswalked away without mentioning anything to Tuturri. When Tuturri awoke the next morning and found Rin gone, he knew immediately where he had gone, and followed him there.
Rin, Awakened
Planeswalker – Rin (M)
+1: Add to your mana pool.
-1: Reveal the top card of your library. If it's an instant or land card, put it onto your hand.
-8: You get an emblem with “You may play instant and land cards from your graveyard.”

Garathar, the Provider
Legendary Creature – Elf Druid (M)
Vigilance
Whenever you cast a creature spell using only mana produced by basic lands, that creature enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it and you gain 2 life. "You have helped to provide us with uncontaminated soil and water, and for that we are forever grateful."

C: Interesting design, although hard to evaluate in vaccuum. How many slaves is there gonna be? Or is it just a subtype to be added? Nevertheless, the flavor is there. Except for the building part, it probably doesn't make much sense to build "creatures", for instance.
P: I can see this set will be a mess with layers and so on. So many creatures changing control, I don't think it's feasible. Still, the flavor is there, although the second ability is not very useful (at least in offensive - you can never attack with those creatures), and the third ability is weird, because it seems you're, indirectly, slaving others' creatures (I think the idea is that they 'join' your side/cause, but still...)
Overall: The cards capture the characters' ideas pretty well, despite some flaws in their design.
C: Unless I'm missing something, we know nothing about Garathar...Which wasn't the point I believe. But the design is good, and creates an interesting deckbuilding tension, for a powerful effect.
P: We know more about Rin, but not enought to understand what he does or why he does it. The card itself seems a mixture of Koth, Xenagos, Domri and Nissa. Yeah, all RG Pws, which is probably the main reason. +1 is fine, but -1 is weird. Nissa does it much better, Domri does it better (up, not down). The emblem is strong for sure, nothing to say.
Overall: Rin is somewhat dull, but the creature is nice. I just wish you had spent more time developping the characters instead of the plane.

The flavor of the cards are great. Jalai, is very pushed. Being able to power out multiple tokens is very strong. I don't like First Strike on creatures with greater toughness than power, but that's a minor nitpick. Mejer, however, is completely bonkers. Hordling Outburst was already a strong card and this card is SO much better.
Whereas Solestico's flavor is better, I think your cards have better design. Rin is very interesting, but focusing on Instants and Lands is a weird combination, especially since red focuses on sorceries more than instants. Also, the ultimate is a little lackluster, I can't imagine ever wanting to activate it. Garathar, on the other hand, is amazing. I love the design and I love how it dips into the "basic land matters" theme.
Koopa - Making an Egyptian themed set is not the most original idea I've ever seen, but I suppose that's ok. Rymas is very difficult to judge out of context power level wise, but he seems pretty cool. Very flavorful. He reminds me a bit of Olivia Voldaren, although he could actually be quite a bit stronger depending on how many slaves are in the environment (it sounds like a major theme). Masos is also quite flavorful, but his middle ability seems a bit parasitic. The first ability is very similar to Venser, and seems fine. The ult is pretty crazy, but I like it.
Although I like it in theory, I'm not sure the environment your implying here would work very well in reality. Having so many creatures exchanging control so frequently seems like a pretty complicated board state to try to keep up with. It's possible you only intend to have these two cards steal creatures, but Masos's middle abilty makes me think otherwise. If two opposing players each control one of these cards, it is possible to have a bunch of creatures exchanging control every turn.
Selesticio - I find the timeline of the story a bit confusing. If the Goblins were defeated druing the Bloody Summer, why did Jalai form a team to protect Farlabth only after the Bloody Summer? As far as the cards go, both seem rather powerful to me, with Mejer probably being too powerful. Still, both of these cards are pretty cool, and only need a bit of balancing.

Oh I guess I don't understand the scoring. I was under the impression that since the crits ended up like this:
A: B, C
B: C, A
C: A, B
It would end as a tie.
It would. Your not taking into account that there are also up to 4 points for providing a top 3 and critiques. Depending in the detail. Your critiques where a little short and thus didn't quite make full marks.
This left the scores at:
Flatline = 5 + 4
Selesticio = 5 + 4
Koopa = 5 + 3
I wasn't aware of this tbh. I assumed Doombringer had done his judging and put Koopa in 3rd :x It's awkward to have a player out because his critiques were a bit short.

Its a little awkard and I'm not sure I made the right decision but I tallied the scores with no idea that the entries where tied except for the critiques scored that I usually tally up before the other scores.
