Over the last few weeks, you went through every clandestine document, every hushed testimony, every hidden evidence or faint recollection in an attempt to find out what how Scarlet Jane was killed.
The problem is not that there is no information, is that there's too much of it. Jane has been all over the world, and nearly everyone she met has a motive to kill her. You manage to verify six aliases for Jane, and you suspect she used a dozen more in her work. There seem to be no end to the stories going around about Jane's past operations. But that's just the tip of the iceberg: Four very official documents claim Jane's last mission was in four different places, could she be in four places at the same time? A book that was once held by Jane has the fifth word of the seventh line of every thirteenth page marked. A code? You visit five different locations where the murder supposedly happened. Was the writing on the wall of the second one a clue? and if so, what does "Quote the bird, no star she hides in thee" even mean? And a witness you find only mumbles "The trees are wrong, the trees are wrong" repeatedly. Another witness says nothing, but screams when he smells cheese.
None of this makes sense, and you're starting to doubt all your sources. What you need is a contact you can trust. Someone in the know, who can point you in the right direction. Someone that you would not normally approach, but these are desperate times.
Luckily, you know just that kind of person.
The mission:
Team Colleague: Every spy has contacts in high places, but for this sort of thing you think a person in a low place will be better. Someone with their ear to the street, who hears whispers that won't normally reach spies. Your contact should be someone who is street-smart enough to hear all sorts of rumors, and who knows which ones are worth paying attention to. You should also continue your Independent investigation. This time, give some attention to Scarlet Jane's old lovers, perhaps being scorned by her has pushed one over the edge (In other words: Create a creature card to represent your contact: someone sly and street-smart. You will critique Team Lover)
Team Protege: You may have trained under Jane's tutelage, but she wasn't the only one who made you the spy you are today. There were other master spies who helped shape your talents. You're still on good terms with one of them. they're retired now, but still keep tabs on what's going on, and their insight will be invaluable. Go and talk to them, and see what they can make of what you found. Since the inside job investigation you were conducting has reached a dead end, you might as well look into the obvious suspects now, and check out Jane's enemies (In other words: Create a creature card to represent your contact: a retired old spy with ample experience. You will critique Team Nemesis)
Team Lover: You may not have the contacts some of Jane's colleagues have, but you do have your resources. Jane would not have taken an interest in you if you were not a person of influence. You know how to use your money and power to convince people to tell you what you need. It's not going to be cheap, but you know the right person whose palms you should grease for some true information about Jane. You send for the arrangement to be made immediately.Since your investigation into Jane's old students has yielded nothing, you now suspect one of her colleagues had a hand in her death. How else could someone like her be killed if not by betrayal? (In other words: Create a creature card to represent your contact: someone you can bribe to get what you want. You will critique Team Colleague)
Team Nemesis: You are getting impatient. There is too much noise and not enough truth. If someone knows something, they need to be made to talk. You've so far avoided interrogating people of too high a rank, but no more. There is someone high enough of the food chain to have the information you need, and you know their one weakness. A small reminder should be enough for them to submit to you. You should also make note of looking into Jane's students. Jane could not have been a kind teacher, perhaps one of her proteges holds a grudge, or maybe they simply needed to to prove that the student can outdo the master? (In other words: Create a creature card to represent your contact: someone you can intimidate into submission. You will critique Team Protege)
Cookies were given to anyone who RPed last round, naturally.
You can get rid of top 3 probation by posting top 3s for the last round. Your window to do so will be closed once the first critique for this round is posted, however.
Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, December 11th @ 23:59, Pacific Time.
Deadline for critique is Thursday, December 13th @ 23:59, Pacific Time.
Good luck!
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each 1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive 2 bonus points per round. One point is awarded for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The suggested scoring method is for each player to critique all remaining players in the same Top 3 style as the first three rounds, with the top half advancing each round, so Top 8, then Top 4, then Finals.
The final round is determined by public poll.
Prior to Top 8, players have a chance of getting a total of 100 points toward their score each Scoring Round. Scores for each Round are determined by the following equation:
Total points of Player A in round N = 100 * X/Y, where:
X = Total number of Scoring Points (Judge Points + Additional Points from Top 3 & Critiques)
Y = Total number of Possible Points (3 * Number of Judges + Additional Points)
3 points are given for a First Place Top 3 finish, 2 points for a Second Place, and 1 point for a Third Place. 1 additional point is awarded if a Top 3 is submitted. 1 additional point is awarded if Critiques are given for all entries to be judged.
This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds prior to Top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
Each player accumulates points from each Scoring Round until the end of Round 3.
REMINDER - Please vote in the November CCL Finals! Only hours left!

Legendary Creature - Elf Rogue (M) GB,t: Destroy target creature with power 5 or greater. GU,t: Return target creature card from a graveyard to its owner's hand. Each of its owner's opponents draws X cards, where X is that creature's power. Many fine dignitaries are willing to pay a fortune to get their hands on a behemoth pelt. And my deluded beast-worshipping brethren will tell me right where I can find one.

Scarlet Thread1
Artifact t: Put target card from a graveyard onto the bottom of its owner's library. G,t, Sacrifice Scarlet Thread: put target card from a graveyard on top of its owner's library. I take a hair from each deadly beast I encounter as a memento. The most dangerous animal I've ever seen used to leave one of hers as a calling card.
-Gerolf, Behemoth Poacher
Gerolf knew his valuable resources. And right now, Information on Scarlett Jane was at a premium. Everyone who was anyone in the game was desperately searching for any kind of clue as to the identity of Scarlett's killer. There was so little real information that some formerly reliable informants were beggining to flood the market with unfounded rumors and false information. Since no one really knew what happened to her, no one really knew what didn't. That's the kind of ignorance that could could turn a decent profit, but the real prize was finding out what really happened. If a clever person got a hold of that information, they could own the city. And that's exactly what Gerolf intended to do. Time to track down some solid information. Starting with Barath.
Barath ran a colloseum where people could pay to see vicous animals fight to the death. It was very popular, and a great source of revenue for Barath. Few people knew that it was also a font of secrets for Barath as well. Subtle enchantments were woven throughout the stadium to gently pick through the thoughts of the patrons. It was a solid business strategy. Show animals fighting each other, sell tickets to everyone, pick their brains for secrets, use that to buy more animals. What this meant to Gerolf was, you give him a rare and valuable animal, he'll give you some rare and valuable information. Since Barath accepted such a unique form of payment, this was a chance to get some info that not many other people had.
Gerolf didn't know if Barath knew anything about Scarlett, but that was to be expected. When you sell secrets, you are very selective about what you let your clients know. However there was one clue that Gerolf picked up by chance. He had sometimes seen red threads attached to various animals in the Colosseum. Sometimes under matted fur, or tied to a blood soaked claw. They were hard for most people to see, but having captured most of these animals, Gerolf could spot when something was out of place. The remarkable thing was, none of the animals with red threads on them ever lost. At the time he thought it was just a way of the bookies cooking the bets, but finding that scarlet thread in his vault got him thinking that these might have been Jane's calling card. And so he had come to Barath.
"Ah Gerolf, good to see you agin. What can I help you with?" asked Barath.
"I want to know who killed Scarlett Jane."
"Ah, Scarlett Jane. I'd heard that she'd died. Poor thing. I'm sorry but even I don't know how she died."
"In that case, I have a proposition for you. A Scarlett Jane memorial match. A hydra vs. a dragon. I can provide both animals, I just need you to set it up."
"Hmm, Scarlett's death is a pretty hot topic right now. A memorial match should bring in a lot of valuable customers. What would you want in return?"
"I want to know how Scarlett died. This match would bring everyone who cared about her together into one place, where you can get at what they know."
"That's a pretty tall order. Are you sure you can get both a hydra and a dragon?"
"I already have them captured and I can get them to you tonight. But I have One more condition. I don't want you sharing the information collected that night with anyone else."
"That's not gonna happen. Do you know how much money I could make off of that?"
"How about first dibs then? If you give me all the relevant information you collect as you collect it, I can turn this memorial match into an annual event."
"Hmmm. Well I suppose I can't refuse an offer like that. You've got yourself a deal."

The throbbing pain in his veins was still evident, however, aftereffects of her forbidden scryings. Only one thing was still clear in his mind: a list of some half a dozen people and their current locations, dancing in ragged golden letters in the forefront of his mind. The first witchfire lamps had only begun to light Cantrip Alley as Telberik arrived. Almost all the stores were closed now, the shades of their windows drawn shut. Occasionally the glow of a candle glimmered behind the curtains, and he could see shadows moving about in several other shops, but for the most part everything was dark and still.
That was the way he wanted it. Huge crowds gathered here during the day, haggling with mages for petty spells and protective amulets. He had no time to waste dodging through a thick press of people scrambling for magical trinkets. He had a man to meet.
For the first few days, he thought he'd gotten the perfect lead: over coffee, he had managed to convince Tristifer the Gray, one of Scarlet Jane's newer students, to aid him in tracking the spy's last movements. He wanted vengeance for his dead master, and it was this desire that let Telberik convince him a partnership was in order.
Unfortunately, the trail soon went cold. Tristifer was a new-comer to the game, with few allies or contacts. Those few he had knew next to nothing about Scarlet Jane. Telberik was on the verge of picking Tristifer's brain apart when one of his informants turned up a surprising tidbit: Scarlet Jane had visited a mask-maker's store to sell off one of her conquests. The proprietor called himself a kindly man, said the informant.
Telberik's ears perked up. He knew of only one person who called himself that.
He asked where the shop was.
The address only confirmed his suspicions.
"Gerrik," he said to himself, "my apologies, but I must pay you a late-night visit."

5/5
There's not many memories Zuri kept from his old life. His personal life was boring at times and nonexistent at others. His old employers would make sure he didn't remember any details after a mission was complete. The few that got to know him personally believe he had died under mysterious circumstances, a way he liked to regard his old self as well. He couldn't even remember when or why he got himself blacked out, a procedure as bizarre and dangerous as it is obscure - then again, memory loss was a symptom to be expected. A lot of things like that were to be expected, but that was just fine by Zuri - he preferred to work in the shadows, and as every spy quickly learns, the only way to make it in this line of work is to become your work. Was it Scarlett Jane that once said "do business for pleasure and pleasure for business"?
His first encounter with Jane was the one memory he'd taken care to preserve through this all. It was during a particularly intense heist at Rimport, a city notorious for its many mobs and criminal masterminds who would pay just as handsomely to have something stolen from the wealthy merchants as those merchants would to have their goods protected. Such bounties were often lucrative, as it was not only a matter of breaking in, but also beating other thieves to it. The latest of such bounties was to acquire Lord Blackstone's coveted Key Ruby; the man had a knack for keeping things safe, and even though he flaunted the priceless gem in plain view, he had foiled some of the world's best with his ingenious safeguards. Unsurprisingly, Scarlett Jane managed to steal it within hours of arriving in the city, which was just fine by Zuri - an anonymous client had hired him to track her movements, and kill her once she left the city.
Long story short, they ran into each other a few days later. In tried and true spy fashion, they discussed business over pleasure, a night he never would forget. Zuri learned that Lord Blackstone himself had hired Jane to fool Rimport's criminals into thinking the ruby was gone, and he in turn let slip someone had paid him to follow and eventually kill her. They fell asleep in each others' arms, but by the time Zuri woke up she was already gone. Later in the day, he found a note under his door from Jane - she'd been doing some detective work, and it turned out Zuri's mystery client was none other than Lord Blackstone. He feared that once she'd finished the fake heist, she'd steal the ruby for herself and vanish. As chance would have it, she had already done so, and one of her proteges was now far outside the city with the Key Ruby. The final line on the note simply said "South Gate at Dusk."
They met at the southern gate that evening. It would've been easy, but Zuri couldn't bring himself to kill her, and she knew it. With one last kiss and a sly wink, she vanished into the night. Their paths would cross once or twice later, but never anything he found worth remembering.
Now the rumor is Scarlett Jane is dead. She had made a lot of powerful enemies in her time, but Zuri had a hunch Lord Blackstone wasn't one to leave a job unfinished. Of course, the only other person who knows she has that ruby at all was one of her old proteges; she mentioned his name once, but that's gone now too.
Although gone isn't entirely accurate.
One thing Zuri learned over the last few years is that memories and death aren't that different. It was one reason necromancers could raise the dead, but could never reverse death itself - they only brought back what the dead were, not who they were. He, however, had learned a few tricks on how to get the dead to talk. And if he can stir the memories of the dead, he can stir dead memories.

The past nine days have been rife with failure and frustration for Zuri. He managed to track down Jane's student quite easily, an elf girl who went by the moniker of Celia Gray. Unfortunately, that's where his investigation hit a dead end. Celia hadn't been in touch with Miss Scarlett since the incident at Rimport, and although she was following her own trails, Zuri sensed she wouldn't get very far. He did, however, manage to get away with one intriguing tidbit - she was on her way to Merasca, where she had sold the Key Ruby. The trail reeked of irrelevance to Zuri; nonetheless, determined to make the most of that knowledge, he headed east to Meruvi Market.
At the base of the namesake mountain, Meruvi Market was the heart of the region's commerce. The mountain was a literal gold mine, spewing forth cartloads of precious metals and gems every day. Eodon ranches and vineyards littered the countryside, and Meruvi Harbor was only two hours south. Bands of travelling merchants and artisans would pass through Meruvi, replenishing their stock before returning to the larger cities. However, concealed in the busy stalls and makeshift shacks, there thrived a much more novel trade. Several years ago, the vedalken scribe Ist had set up a network of spies, thieves and street urchins to collect every rumor, story and scrap of information that passed through the streets of Meruvi. He will sell many rumors, but good, hard information comes at a premium. A good deal of his paying customers were disreputable at best, and any information given to him would invariably end up in the wrong hands. Zuri always regretted consulting him for leads, but he didn't have much choice this time.

Zalatraz was starting to become annoyed. Not only had he not found the information he was after, but he still hadn't been able to get a hold of his key informant, that blasted vermin was always good at keeping a low profile. He was about to give up when he caught a break and found out that Blackear was had set up shop in Galamora, a decent sized town that was outside the influence of most kingdoms, and therefore there law officials.
Blackear was one of the unpopular Ratkin that existed, and one of the very few that willing lived within city boarders. He was one of the numerous backstreet information dealers that existed in the kingdom, and as far as Zalatraz was concerned, he was one of the best.
Once he had arrived in Galamora, it was short work getting the location of Blackear. Most would have to pay and set up a meet or three before they got the chance, Zalatraz however didn't have the time or patience for that though, locating the Rat in one of the sealed off Sewer Tunnels. And after a bit of... persuasion with Blackear's hired thugs, he finally got the meet up. The Rat sat in the small dank room in his black robes, smiling as if he expected Zalatraz.
The talks began, and it was clear that Blackear was reluctant to give up his information on what he knew of Jane, since he had gotten some pretty juicy Intel it would seem, a fact that he hung over the Viashino, planning on milking him for quiet a pretty penny. However, when Zalatraz put the Deed to the Graveyard in Zagot on the table though, a place where many empty tombs were filled with illicit goods that Zalatraz had collected over the years, the Rat was shocked. Zalatraz was in no mood to deal with lengthy negotiations...

KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

Contact, yeah sure. Reliable? Well that's a whole other story. What this guy lacks in precision, he sure makes up for in volume. It can get places that would take me a bundle to bribe my way in or weeks of prep and materials to even attempt a less welcome entrance. An imp loves mischief and as long as I keep it directed elsewhere, it usually pays off.
Episode Two - A Contact in the Fog
