February will be Return month! Planar revisits have been some of Wizards' most popular sets in recent years. This month, you will be designing cards for a return to a plane that has yet to be revisited in a Magic set. Be wary of the design choices you make; the cards you design will influence your design limitations for future rounds this month.
Round 2 Challenge:
Choose a card from any set from your chosen block. Note that card in your submission, then design a card that is a mechanical and/or flavorful callback to the chosen card. Your card cannot share a card type or rarity with your round 1 submission.
The card must be from a set from your chosen block. You cannot use a card that is merely from that setting (for instance, Mizzix of the Izmagnus would not be an acceptable base card.
Make sure to include a rarity.
PLEASE NOTE: This month will NO LONGER use the "mandatory top 3" rule. Critiques and top 3s will each be worth one bonus point per round but it will be possible to score points and advance even without submitting a top 3. This will also be done on a trial basis; future months may once again require top 3s from contestants.
Round 1 — Open to Everyone (Feb 1th-6th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (Feb 7th–12th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due Feb 15th)
Top 8 — Open to top 8 finishers (Feb 16th–19th)
Top 8 Critiques (Due Feb 22nd)
Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (Feb 23rd–25th)
Top 4 Critiques (Due Feb 28th)

4/4

Artifact
Whenever you sacrifice a permanent, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. t, Sacrifice a permanent: Add one mana of any type.
Shanking Knife2
Artifact - Equipment (R)
Equipped creature has first-strike and deathtouch.
Equip 2 Dented and bent. Pitted and stained. Grimy and neglected. But holding it made you feel as if you could kill anything.
Ugin's Spirit-Blade 1
Artifact-Equipment (R)
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and gains vigilance.
Whenever a colorless creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may attach Ugin's Spirit-Blade to it. Only those similar in spirit to the Soul of Tarkir may wield it.
Foothold To Nyx1G
Sorcery (C)
Bloat (You may discard an enchantment card or sacrifice an enchantment as an additional cost to cast this spell.)
You may search your library for up to two basic land cards that share a basic land type and reveal them. Put those cards into your hand. If Foothold to Nyx was bloated, put one of those land card onto the library battlefield instead. Shuffle your library. The gods wondered what mighty force could possibly be draining their strength. They never imagined an invasion could begin with mold.
Bane Satyr1GG
Enchantment Creature - Satyr Horror (R)
Corrupt artifact or enchantment 2GG(If you cast this card for its corrupt cost, it's an Aura spell with enchant artifact or enchantment. It becomes a creature again if it's not attached to a permanent.)
Enchanted artifact or enchantment has "At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice this permanent." Phyrexia adapts as it feeds.
4/2
Araba's Garrison3
Artifact - Fortification(R)
Whenever fortified land becomes tapped, create a 1/1 white samurai token with Bushido 1 (Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.).
Fortify 1W(1W: Attach to target land you control. Fortify only as a sorcery. This card enters the battlefield unattached and stays on the battlefield if the land leaves.)
Nezumi Infiltrator1UB

3/2
Makeshift Augmentation2W

When Makeshift Augmentation is put into a graveyard from teh battlefield, create two 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature tokens. "Give me an arm."
Prevaricating Impersonation2UU
Enchantment (R)
Sacrifice a face-down permanent: Add CCC.
Whenever a permanent you control is turned face up, you may have Prevaricating Impersonation become a copy of that permanent except it has "Sacrifice a face-down permanent: Add CCC" and this ability.
Sigil of Tirel1WW
Enchantment - Aura (Rare)
Enchant permanent
Enchanted permanent has indestructible. 3WW: Permanents you control gain indestructible until end of turn. No one knows what became of Valeron's holy knight, but her love and duty towards Bant will never be forgotten.
Indestructibility tells me this is probably too cheap, I think I would have preferred the activated ability as a sacrifice effect as well.
Sokenzan Raiders2R
Creature - Human Samurai (U)
First strike
Bushido 1
Whenever a creature with bushido you control deals combat damage to a player, you may discard a card. If you do, draw a card.
2/1
Soulsplit StrikeW
Instant (R)
Exile target nontoken creature. Its controller creates four 1/1 colorless Spirit creature tokens. "I have learned not to fear it, now I will learn how to master it."
Sacrificial Altar (Rare) 3
Artifact
Whenever you sacrifice a permanent, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. t, Sacrifice a permanent: Add one mana of any type.
This is begging to be used in a near infinite number of infinite combo decks, and probably should cost more than three mana.
Creature - Rat Ninja (C)
As long and opponent control a fortified land tapped, Nezumi Infiltrator is unblockeable. "When you decide to be something, you can be it."
3/2
I think "tapped fortified land" would be the correct wording. This cards feels needlessly multi-colored, especially at common.
4/2
I'm really not a fan of Enchantment Phyrexia. Corrupt has a much weirder feel for having the enchantment become a creature than bestow did, especially if it were ever on cards that didn't naturally destroy what they enchanted..
Faeries' Feast1B
Tribal Instant - Faerie (Uncommon)
Regress (As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may put a card from your hand on top of your library.)
Target player discards a card. If you regressed this spell, you gain 4 life.
Auntie Grub, Master Chef3RR
Legendary Creature - Goblin (Rare) 1R, Sacrifice a Goblin and a Goat: Auntie Grub, Master Chef deals 4 damage to target creature or player. "... Soon enough, the diligent auntie decided to explore recipes that would make the stomach grow and the den shrink" —A tale of Auntie Grub
4/4
This feels rather weak, the activated ability could probably cost no mana and still be really hard to make happen with any consistency.
TheDrB - Neat, but miserable to face on defense. Thank GOD Equip is sorcery speed.
Gateways7 - Can't say I really get this one - what's an (undead) adult Dragon doing with 2 power? How's a 2/1 die and have its skull made into that huge throne? Why the bad battle cry?
zdtsd - Cool, but possibly narrow to a feel-bad degree, and this might do something dumb with morphs, which I realize was the point.
Jimmy Groove - Corrupt is cool and feels like it'd have lots of design space. I do wish the costs on this went up as needed for it to have flash to properly feel like the original, though.
netn10 - I adore this card. It's so narrow and dumb but so perfect in flavor and execution, and the existence of Changelings definitely helps.
Cardz5000 - As much as I do like tokens of existing past creatures, this feels like an amount of chump blockers and lifegain that could get oppressive real fast. Props for making it hybrid though.
Regent of Bone1BR
Creature - Dragon Skeleton (Mythic)
Flying, haste
Whenever Regent of Bone attacks, other attacking creatures you control get +1/-1 until the end of the turn.
When Regent of Bone dies, you may search your library for a card named Dragon Throne of Tarkir and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.
2/1
A couple of things feel off on this one. For starter, this just can't be a mythic rare. I get the restriction on the rarity challenge but it doesn't feel mythic at all, both power-level and flavor wise. It's not even legendary . Secondly: you'll need a rare card to work with your mythic card which in a limited environment is almost impossible to pull off. Also it's not very goood for constructed, seems more like something from a pre-con deck. Not impressed, sorry.
I get what you're going for and it's cute, but I don't think leaving out Equip entirely would be a good move. It just doesn't feel right.
This card has such a weird appeal to it, I can't quite understand the flavor behind it. I like it though, it can have a lot of build around option, like with Ixidron, or Eldrazis, or face-down permanents Storm-aristocrats-whatever. I can see a lot of brewer like me trying to figure out what to do with this and it's something that makes me appreciate it a lot.
Makeshift Augmentation2W
Enchantment - Aura (c)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2
When Makeshift Augmentation is put into a graveyard from teh battlefield, create two 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature tokens. "Give me an arm."
Nice concept ad clean design. It's an interesting spin to something a la toten armor, which I'm not a huge fan of. It also ties reasonably with your post "apocalyptic scenario" from your round 1 which is cool.
Marang Trapper2GU
Creature — Human Scout (R)
Wealth (When this card is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, reveal the top card of your library. If it has a lower converted mana cost than this card, put it into your hand.)
~ can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less.
Whenever ~ attacks, other creatures you control gain wealth until end of turn.
3/2
Following the Path3UR
Sorcery (U)
Draw a card, then reveal a card from your hand. Following the Path deals damage to any target equal to the converted mana cost of the revealed card. The Way is different for everyone who walks it; follow not another's.
Definitely an improvement on Master the Way, which was absolute balls especially in limited. This has much more applications and can be very good and just as bad, balancing it well.
I really liked your round 1 submission and I'm sad to say this is not quite as good and as interesting design-wise. I would have kept in mind the Radiant ability when designing this, like giving indestructible to other permanents with the same or different colors of the enchanted one, making it more of a build around card, rather than "just" a good limited rare. It's balanced well, and the flavor is there. I just find it bland.
picnic_bomber (Kamigawa) - I am a fan of this. The inherent modality adds a lot of depth.
Legend (Rath) - The connection feels very tenuous. It should have more in common besides just sacrificing. The card itself feels fine, but I have the feeling there is some brokenness lurking that I'm not seeing.
mirrodin71 (Kamigawa) - This feels very narrow, even in a set exploring fortifications. I'm not sure why the fortified land has to be tapped.
Jimmy Groove (Theros) - I like the idea (played with it myself in an inferior way), but I feel like this needs more seperation in its costs. In a normal set the 1 additional mana would be okay, but with enchantments everywhere like Theros, it needs more.
netn10 (Lorwyn) - This does not feel rare, despite the Legendary status and flavor win. Having to have a goblin and a goat?
Cardz5000 (Lorwyn) - Love it. Throw in some damage prevention, and you really start humming along.
Top 3:
1. Cardz5000
2. picnic_bomber
3. Jimmy Groove
TheDrB - This doesn't feel like it should be a rare at all - it's a very simplistic design. It's also not that much of a relevant call-back to the Shanker. It is a good card though, there are just aspects that make it less than ideal.
Cardz500 - Goldenglow Moth seems like a weird choice for tokens, but the card is pretty thematically and mechanically focused. Solid.
Netn10 - That's a funny card that both plays into the theme shown with Goatnapper of Changelings matter, and is pretty flavorfully hilarious. Awesome!
Jimmy Groove - This is only a callback in name - there aren't really any relevant elements of the card that are a callback. Also, the corrupt mechanic doesn't feel that interesting - maybe if it was just enchant permanent, it would be more interesting in gameplay (or you could just reuse Bestow.)
mirrodin71 - This is a really good common that pairs well with your set mechanic, no complaints here.
Legend - This is a fine sacrifice payoff, but I feel like there's an infinite combo in here somewhere.
3 - Cardz500
2 - mirrodin71
1 - netn10

A couple of things feel off on this one. For starter, this just can't be a mythic rare. I get the restriction on the rarity challenge but it doesn't feel mythic at all, both power-level and flavor wise. It's not even legendary . Secondly: you'll need a rare card to work with your mythic card which in a limited environment is almost impossible to pull off. Also it's not very goood for constructed, seems more like something from a pre-con deck. Not impressed, sorry.
I get what you're going for and it's cute, but I don't think leaving out Equip entirely would be a good move. It just doesn't feel right.
Nice concept ad clean design. It's an interesting spin to something a la toten armor, which I'm not a huge fan of. It also ties reasonably with your post "apocalyptic scenario" from your round 1 which is cool.
Definitely an improvement on Master the Way, which was absolute balls especially in limited. This has much more applications and can be very good and just as bad, balancing it well.
