The thick jungle vines are finally more help than hindrance, as you pull yourself up to the top of the crumbling stone wall. You have finally made it to the Lost Temple of Azulta, driven by mystic portents or perhaps mundane rumors of undiscovered riches. Will you be the first to claim what lies inside?
A stone bridge once crossed above the courtyard before you, but it has long ago fallen and been reclaimed by the earth. A row of symbolic stelae stands on either side of the courtyard, although some have fallen or partially worn away. The stone walls around are covered with sharp-thorned vines. You will need to cross to the opening high in the far wall to proceed, but an even bigger obstacle growls and emerges from the shadows - a hulking baloth has picked up your scent!
Challenge
Design a common creature to represent your temple raider. This creature must be able to flavorfully/mechanically surpass the challenge described above (the Baloth is a 4/4 green Beast token). Also, your creature cannot have unconditional flying.

Please start now if you can but I think the ultimate deadline will be June 11th.
Raptorchan - Interesting concept that I've seen done before. Ultimately feels more blue than black. Obviously the name "Hagra Survivalists" isn't very blue though. Fun in a Zendikar flavor, though. Not sure how great it would play but at least would lead to some funny Limited moments.
RaikouRider - Criminy, what an annoying thing to attack into. Darksteel Myr is a three-mana uncommon for a reason. A blocker that can't die by combat in common would make Limited potentially miserable. Exalted is just kinda gravy here. Also really not getting a temple-raiding adventurer from the whole Bant squire flavor.
doomfish - Similar to Raptorchan's but executed in a way I haven't seen before; I like the sheer utility on display here, although the flavor is only really partially explained by the (otherwise good) flavor text. Feels almost core set-y. Could this be common? I feel like this is an uncommon level of complexity and just oddness, not that it's an OP card or anything.
netn10 - Very Shadowmoor-feeling; I'm glad this feels so perfect in both monogreen and monowhite. Bushido variants are as old as the hills and this one is really quite situational, but hey, it fits the challenge. Unfortunately the flavor's not quite right.
Cardz5000 - "THE RAIDERS' MARCH" INTENSIFIES (I do enjoy reach in red and the Indy flavor. Great stats/keywords combination.)
Jimmy Groove - Something feels distinctly nonred about this card. I mean, I don't think it's completely wrong to put it in red, but it also feels so much more like it should be green or white mechanically. Definitely could have used flavor text. Interesting mechanically if annoying as hell (for the 9 power and toughness across three bodies) on the block.
Akrasan Aegis1W
Creature - Human Soldier {C}
Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
Whenever Akrasan Aegis blocks, it gains indestructible until end of turn.
0/2
I'm not picking up on the flavor or mechanics that would allow this card to overcome the challenge. From a card design standpoint, I don't want this effect at common.
Hagra Survivalists3B
Creature - Goblin Scout (C)
Skulk (This creature can't be blocked by creatures with greater power.) 1: Hagra Survivalists gets -1/-0 until end if turn. "Why do we carry all this loot? To run faster when we drop it, of course!"
4/2
loot=power is a bit of an odd flavor, but I like the creative interaction of weakening itself to sneak through, and he seems resourceful enough to figure a way across the vines or whatnot after slipping passed the baloth. Another note on flavor: mono-black goblins in zendikar feel out of place.
Vedalken Ropemaker1GU
Creature - Vedalken Scout (C)
Vigilance 1GUT: Target creature gets -4/+4 until end of turn. "Nets, grapnels, trip lines - I've got it all."
2/2
Nice work here with fresh take on GU of the cunning trapper. negates the threat of the baloth with a net and probably uses a grappling hook or somesuch to cross the chasm.
Artful Ranger2G
Creature - Elf Scout (c)
When Artful Ranger enters the battlefield, create a 0/1 colorless Decoy artifact creature token with "This creature must be blocked if able."
2/3
Acrobatic Archaeologist2R
Creature — Human Advisor Rogue (C)
Acrobatic Archaeologist can't be blocked except by creatures with first strike, double strike, vigilance, or haste. A famous thief must always be seen and never be caught.
2/2
A clean take on the 'fast creatures' keyword soup. The type line does seem a bit too much, and the name does not evoke a thief.
Boy Adventurer3RR
Creature - Human (C)
When Boy Adventurer enters the battlefield, create two 2/2 red Warrior creature tokens.
Tap an untapped Warrior you control: Boy Adventurer gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
1/1
This is just nasty. Remember Darksteel Myr? Me too. Your card costs less and has exalted so balance is pretty bad here. Especially for a common.
This made me giggle. And I like the fact your design is kinda similar to mine. Skulk in red feels off and definetely would cause the point reduction in MCC challenge. Other than that, I like it.
This card is tricky but surprisingly fair. It takes down a 4/4 but dies from anything bigger - though it will have a virtual deathtouch for creatures with toughness 5 and lower. This is okay for green.
Simple and dangerous. Also fragile, as expected from such risky color as red. No problems here.
Atypical red card with a minor bonus/drawback, reminds me about that transform land from Rivals of Ixalan. Not something broken but flavorful and fits the challenge well. Though the problem is evasion ability in red and complexity for a common.
Maybe a bit too complex for a common unless your implied set has a Decoy subtheme.
Elvish Giant-Slayer
Creature - Elf Soldier (Common)
Whenever Elvish Giant-Slayer blocks or becomes blocked by a creature with 4 or more power, Elvish Giant-Slayer gets +3/+3 until end of turn. "The bigger they are, the more blind spots to exploit."
2/2
Meets the challenge. I think a flavor fail is evident here, as BG Elves and Giants are clear LRW/SHM references, but in fact giant-slaying is closely associated with Kithkin (cf Goldmeadow Dodger, Gaddock Teeg). I have some questions about pie as well, given that green tends to not punish opponents for using large creatures (much the opposite; fight-based removal and a general low concentration of evasion reward green's opponents for having large creatures of their own).
Artful Ranger2G
Creature - Elf Scout (c)
When Artful Ranger enters the battlefield, create a 0/1 colorless Decoy artifact creature token with "This creature must be blocked if able."
2/3
Meets the challenge if certain circumstances are assumed. I don't know about the decoy being an artifact with a new type. That seems ... unneeded.
Vedalken Ropemaker1GU
Creature - Vedalken Scout (C)
Vigilance 1GUT: Target creature gets -4/+4 until end of turn. "Nets, grapnels, trip lines - I've got it all."
2/2
"Surpass the challenge" is a pretty vague condition, but I don't judge this to pass; my reading was "either kill the baloth or attack and cause it to fail to block." The Ropemaker can survive the baloth when the baloth is attacking and it blocks, but it can't get past it either way.
4/2
Meets the challenge. I don't particularly like it. Juggling numbers to turn un skulk is awkward and doesn't seem like it's to your long-term advantage unless you're getting a non-damage benefit out of it. Are there black Goblins on Zendikar? If there are, I'm not aware of them.
Akrasan Aegis1W
Creature - Human Soldier {C}
Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
Whenever Akrasan Aegis blocks, it gains indestructible until end of turn.
0/2
By the same metric as above, this doesn't meet the challenge.
Ogre Sneak5R
Creature - Ogre Rogue (C)
Haste
Skulk
When Ogre Sneak enters the battlefield, you may put a +1/+1 counter on another target creature. It takes the smarts of an ogre to get the idea to sneak past a dragon. It takes the size of a dragon to miss a sneaking ogre.
4/4
Meets the challenge. This is another ungainly skulk card.
That's oddly specific, but a good effect to put on a 2/2 to make it stay relevant throughout the game. It might be borderline too complex for common, as it makes attacking and blocking difficult, having to consider that this is a potential 5/5. So I'd at least limit it to becoming blocked. It's a nice space for hybrid, but white is more +2/+2 and usually doesn't get +3/+3. For hybrid one can make an exception though.
I like reach on red cards. I also like low toughness on high power first strike creatures. While I'd enjoy that in a set to play with it's not terribly exciting for design competition.
More like Rich Boy flavor to me. This is plenty complex for a common, pretty sure I'd move this up to uncommon in most sets instantly. I like the gameplay pattern though.
Keywords matter! I love it. It's a lot to check for in a common, but it might just be okay.
Would need to playtest it to see if it plays as nicely as it reads, but I like it. Making tokens with text is weird at common, but I'll allow it.
Repeatable combat math variance that goes anywhere on a common? Not in new world order!

Doomfish: Interesting use of skulk, althought it might be too tailored for this specific situation. I'm not sure if it fits in common.
RaikouRaider: Not a common at first glance. I fail to see how this would be fit for the challenge.
Raptorchan: I really like this. It's a bit odd, but we've seen some instances of sacrificing power for evasion before. The "hard to block with some work" aspect of it feels fit for red.
Voidnothing: It doesn't quite surpass that annoying Baloth, but survives to it in its try to cross the bridge. Other than that, it looks fine.
Netn10: Kills the Baloth dead. It might not be so fit for white, but white punsihes big creature so it might be fine. Hybrid always vomes with the plus of bending the pie just a bit.
Cardz5000: Very nicely put together for a common. Dangerous, risky and expensive.
