February CCL 2018 Round 2 - Old Friends, New Faces
Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!
Theme
This month we'll be unleashing our imaginations to make the familiar unfamiliar, the old new, the antiquated fresh. Planeswalkers are among the most difficult cards to design, and among the most difficult to make feel fresh. Melissa deTora's article on the planeswalker design process highlights some of these difficulties.
For this challenge, I want us each to create a planeswalker card that does NOT follow the usual template of some combination of plus and minus or plus and zero followed by an ultimate that can be reached only after having plussed a few times. My hope is that we will come up with some fun and novel designs by focusing on the structure of planeswalker cards themselves.
Challenge
Choose a character you would be excited to see receive a planeswalker card in the upcoming set Dominaria. Then design a planeswalker card of that character that satisfies the stipulation above. See the clarifications for examples of past planeswalkers that would and would not successfully complete this challenge.
Make sure to include a rarity.
Non-planeswalker cards that flip into planeswalkers are not allowed.
The focus of this exercise is the mechanical execution of a planeswalker design. This is not a lore competition. Please do not make critiques and judgments based upon whether certain characters are more or less worthy of being planeswalkers than others.
Something to think about: Planeswalker ultimates are often the only part of a planeswalker that does not feel generic, since the other abilities are generally conceived to be broadly applicable abilities capable of being used to generate value for midrange decks in a whole host of potential environments. You may find yourself deviating from this norm in this challenge, and that is perfectly fine (Huatli, Radiant Champion is a fun narrow design).
It is my hope that the restrictions of this challenge will help you hone your thinking and breed creativity. Have fun with this challenge, and don't hesitate to ask any clarifying questions.
Please vote in January's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for Januarys's CCL!
PLEASE NOTE: This month will continue the use of the "Mandatory Top 3 Rule." For this month, you must submit a Top 3 during a round's critique period in order to receive any points for the round. Submitting critiques as well will be worth 2 bonus points in the round. Additionally, because February is an abbreviated month, I'm going to stilt Rounds 1 and 2 so that we save a day. Hopefully this will let March progress as normal.
Your submissions are due Saturday, February 10th, 23:59 PST.

I need this card in any Madness deck. The wording is slightly off but thats fine. This card is pretty bonkers if it goes unchecked, it feels very "All in" and very red and fresh. It might be too strong becouse you can just discard an Emrakul when she enters the battlefield and just go to town. I like this design but it might be too much.
Serra Reawekened
Legendary Planeswalker - Serra (M)
Whenever you cast a spell, put a loyalty counter on Serra Reawakened for each white mana symbol in that spell's mana cost.
-1: Your life total becomes equal to the number of loyalty counters on Serra Reawakened.
-2: Destroy target artifact or enchantment.
-X: Create a white X/X Angel creature token with flying and vigilance.
//3
Devotion meets planeswalkers. Now this is a build around be planeswalker I can get behind! I don't like X/X angels, that's more of avatar's territory but that's just a nitpick. I can see this card single-handedly make new archetypes possible and that's fresh and exciting. I like it!
Karona RevivedWUBRG
Legendary Planeswalker - Karona (M)
Whenever you cycle a card, put a loyalty counter on Karona Revived.
[-3]: Exile up to one target permanent for each card you've drawn this turn.
[-3]: You may choose a card you own from outside the game and put it into your hand for each card you've discarded this turn.
[5]
Karona and cycling... Interesting. I'm not a flavor expert but the last time we saw Karona, it was a tribal-centric legand. Anyway, this card seems very narrow as it require 5 colors of mana and building around a mechanic that isn't present in many blocks. the two -3 abilities doesn't mesh that well but I can see how they "mirror" each other. All in all, seems fine for casual but I don't feel this design.
Squee, Goblin Ancient2
Legendary Planeswalker - Squee (M)
Squee, Goblin Ancient can't be attacked.
0: Create a 1/1 red Goblin creature token.
-1: Squee, Goblin Ancient deals 2 damage to target creature.
-1: Target creature you control gains "When this creature dies, return the card to its owner's hand" until end of turn.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may return Squee, Goblin Ancient from your graveyard to your hand.
1
"Squee, Goblin Ancient can't be attacked." - that is the sentence that hooked me up. Then, I read the rest of the card and yea, that's exacly what you expect Squee to be. 1 loyalty for 4 mana and it can't go any higher but the abilities create so much cool tension and the last ability is so fresh! This card is very flavorful, creative and fun. It might be even playable in a goblin modern deck, as it does it all.
Ajani, Soul's Pleroma
Legendary Planeswalker - Ajani (M)
0: Ajani, Soul's Pleroma deals damage equal to his loyalty to target creature.
0: Add an amount of mana of any one color to your mans pool equal to Ajani, Soul's Pleroma's loyalty.
0: Create an X/X white Avatar creature token, where X is Ajani, Soul's Pleroma's loyalty.
{[3]}
Three 0 abilities without a way to increase loyalty is very interesting. Ajani as a Naya card, three balanced abilities, this card is very fresh and clean. I like it and it is very down to the ground and printable.
Jaya Ballard, Uncaged Inferno1RR
Legendary Planeswalker - Jaya (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, Jaya deals X damage to you or target creature you control, where X is the number of loyalty counters on her.
+2 > Jaya deals 2 damage to each creature you don't control.
+2 > Until the beginning of your next upkeep, creatures without flying can't block.
+1 > Jaya deals 3 damage to target player.
[2]
This card is broken in half. The drawback is very interesting but the first ability is way too strong. The second one is a fine way to finish the game after you killed your opponents' board but it doesn't mash well with the first ability. The third ability is more of the same and a way to kill Jaya if she's becomes too risky... so that's interesting. Overall, interesting card but I think it is a bit too strong.
MahBoiii - This is so Squee. I do feel like this will almost always be a token engine, but the other abilities do provide depth if needed.
Cardz5000 - I like this for play mode, but I definitely get a BR feel. It also seems like it would be very common to not activate abilities of this every turn, which is an interesting play switch.
netn10 - One of the things I think Planeswalkers should always provide is a target for attacking, and I don't think this really qualifies. I think a more asymmetrical 'ultimate' would be helpful.
|Katamari| - Excellent way to uplift Sisay. I wasn't sold on the vehicle specificity at first, until I realized the flavor connection.
mirrodin71 - I feel like this Jhoira has to have a lot of stuff going on to make it effective in all modes. And that minus definitely makes it feel like it needs an exile ability on the other abilities to function well.
Gerrard's Mom - I am mightily confused as to how this would play out. If unchecked, I feel like it could end up being very confusing, with a lot of things appearing and disappearing all the time.
[5]
Karona had a very odd card back in the day, and I think this one is fittingly unique too. Its usefulness does seem quite niche though; 5 colors as well as a "cycling matters" approach really is narrow. As a Johnny myself though, I do like the idea and would be curious to see what shenanigans could be pulled off in a deck with her.
//3
I love Serra so definitely have a bit of bias towards wanting to see her again, though I'll admit it'd be kinda unlikely (oh but new timeline so who knows). Serra's full embodiment of white mana would engender a PW with traditional white effects and I think this satisfies that quite well. I love the build around aspect the card has to it, and could very easily see a deck from this. I will say, I think the -1 ability seems quite weak as Serra is unlikely ever to have her loyalty high enough to make it impactful; I could see it being changed to something else.
[2]
I'm definitely excited to see Jaya make a return in Dominaria so I'm glad somebody took a stab at her PW card. I am scared of this card; seeing this on my opponent's side of the field as a mono-red deck spells disaster very quickly. The one thing that might lean this card a bit too powerful is the option to hit your own creature instead of your face as I could imagine builds that actually get a benefit from doing so (Boros Reckoner comes to mind). Everything else is great and would make me happy to play one or two of this in a Red Deck Wins build.
{[3]}
Well this certainly does meet the requirement for the challenge as a very different take on PW loyalty abilities. This guy really is a Swiss Army knife and seems like it'd be right to play out in nearly every situation. I feel the mana ability might prove too strong, but definitely something that I think would best be determined through playtesting. Another thing I wanted to point out that these effects are all things we've seen before so it does come off as a bit safe, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing given the nature of this challenge, just a bit disappointing.
I do admit though Ajani is a PW I'd be quite disappointed to see in the Dominaria set as it's been stated they want to connect the old school characters to the modern storyline, so using up a PW card spot with him would feel like a slight to the more classic characters of Magic.
Radha the Fearless2RG
Legendary Planeswalker - Radha {M}
Radha the Fearless has starting loyalty equal to the total power of creatures you control.
0: Radha deals damage equal to her loyalty to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to her.
-8: Untap all creatures that attacked this turn. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase. Those creatures attack that combat if able.
{*}
As unlikely as it is for Radha to ascend, I think it's plausible enough and could be justified. The starting loyalty mechanic is interesting especially given she has no way to increase her loyalty after she's in play. I do think that her -8 is lacking a bit of "Oomph" as it doesn't seem to really enable a win. You'll either not have enough creatures out when Radha's played so you can't activate it, you'll be ahead on creatures in which case that effect is "win more" (or just sub-par compared to fighting one of your opponents few creatures), or you're at parity with your opponent in which case getting 2 combats won't really matter as you'll have lost most your creatures after the first one. I compare it to Garruk Wildspeaker's -4 which grows and enables creatures to push through defensive board states, and this really kinda falls flat. I imagine she'll usually play out as a kind of Prey Upon on-a-stick, which is a really solid ability, but could really use something else that's more impactful.
Ghost Council Ascendant1WWBB
Legendary Planeswalker - Obzedat(MR)
When Ghost Council Ascendant dies, return all permanent cards exiled with it to the battlefield under your control.
[-1]: Exile target artifact or enchantment.
[-2]: Exile target permanent card in a graveyard.
[-3]: Exile target creature.
[5]
Right off the bat I have to really question the choice of Obzedat. They've never been hinted at having a spark (sparks?), nor are they related to Dominaria, and even if they did ascend I would think they'd be more focused on using their powers to consolidate power and influence throughout Ravnica in order to exploit everything/everyone they could from that plane first.
The mechanics of the card are unique and the death trigger fits Orzhov quite well; taking tribute from others and then using those for your own agendas. I'm happy to see you're only able to grab 1 creature (in play) with them as that's generally the most desirable effect they have. I do want to point out the potential color infraction with a black card being able to remove an artifact, but I don't think it's a huge issue as this is a PW card so they're generally allowed to break some traditional rules.

Flavor:
Living check: Immortality is a good sign.
Planeswalker check: extremely unlikely, but not impossible
I get that squee is hard (impossible) to kill, but I don't get why you can't attack him.
Mechanics:
Stopping people from attacking isn't red, and it's weird that the only time he could be attacked is if you have used his ability that gives you a blocker anyways.
The rest of the card works well.
[5]
Flavor:
Living check: Avatar that has been formed and killed twice already... checks out, could probably happen again.
Planeswalker check: According to MTG \wasn't\ a planeswalker... but she did go to other planes... on her own... (I think she may be something akin to the eldrazi, but that's just personal opinion)... maybe this iteration of her is a planeswalker
not sure why she likes cycling, but the exile and the wish both make complete sense for her character.
Mechanics:
Non-evergreen mechanics don't belong on Planeswalkers.
that being said, the activated abilities being related to the cycling is nice.
I would probably put an ability to discard to draw during the upkeep or draw step and grant a +1 whenever you draw 1 or more cards after the first each turn.

Serra Reawekened

-1: Your life total becomes equal to the number of loyalty counters on Serra Reawakened.
-2: Destroy target artifact or enchantment.
-X: Create a white X/X Angel creature token with flying and vigilance.

Flavor:
Living check: Not confirmed dead
Planeswalker check: Had the spark, supposedly extinguished by the mending, but weirder things have happened *looks at karn*

Planeswalker check: Yes!

0: Radha deals damage equal to her loyalty to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to her.
-8: Untap all creatures that attacked this turn. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase. Those creatures attack that combat if able.

Devotion meets planeswalkers. Now this is a build around be planeswalker I can get behind! I don't like X/X angels, that's more of avatar's territory but that's just a nitpick. I can see this card single-handedly make new archetypes possible and that's fresh and exciting. I like it!
Three 0 abilities without a way to increase loyalty is very interesting. Ajani as a Naya card, three balanced abilities, this card is very fresh and clean. I like it and it is very down to the ground and printable.

Karona Revived WUBRG
Legendary Planeswalker - Karona (M)
Whenever you cycle a card, put a loyalty counter on Karona Revived.
[-3]: Exile up to one target permanent for each card you've drawn this turn.
[-3]: You may choose a card you own from outside the game and put it into your hand for each card you've discarded this turn.
//3
Jaya Ballard, Uncaged Inferno 1RR
Legendary Planeswalker - Jaya (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, Jaya deals X damage to you or target creature you control, where X is the number of loyalty counters on her.
+2 > Jaya deals 2 damage to each creature you don't control.
+2 > Until the beginning of your next upkeep, creatures without flying can't block.
+1 > Jaya deals 3 damage to target player.
{[3]}
Radha the Fearless 2RG
Legendary Planeswalker - Radha {M}
{*}
Ghost Council Ascendant 1WWBB

Flavor:
Living check: Not confirmed dead
Planeswalker check: Confirmed yes!
Flavor:
Living check: Magic lore is weird... maybe?
Planeswalker check: Confirmed yes!
Flavor:
Living check: Not confirmed dead
Planeswalker check: Had the spark, supposedly extinguished by the mending, but weirder things have happened *looks at karn*
Flavor:
Living check: One would assume.
Planeswalker check: Yes!
Sorry ran out of time.
