For the rules, you don't need to keep the name the same, but strive to match the name with the new cost like I did above. i.e. Woodland Bellower might be "Woodland Whimperer" as a 1G (as well as getting you a free 0/1 Green creature token)
Keep the card type the same too. that's the idea.
Edit: The below poster is right, you may use color shifts as well, as long as they aren't too extreme or completely obscure the source card.
If you choose an old card, also include the current rules as well, so we don't get confused with old rule text, as below.
To get you going I went to Gatherer to look for a card, and lets see.... Benalish Missionary as a 2WW (It's an old card and the current text says "1W, t: Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by target blocked creature this turn.")
Seems like a fine game, though I don't see what would be wrong with a color-shift here or there.
