Preliminary note: Yes, I'm the same guy as Socrates. Sue me. Anyway:
Welcome to the plane of Misamar, a land of oddities and adventure. Right off the bat, Misamar is notable for its most perilous trait: the mist. Much of the wasteland of this plane is enveloped by a fatal mist, making conventional travel impossible. Instead, travelers rely on the "PYlian Stones." Left by an ancient civilization, these stones will teleport anyone who chooses from one stone site to another, allowing for safe travel between destinations without having to step through the mist. Through the recent history of civilization in Misamar, more and more Pylian Stones have "awakened." No one is sure how large the plane even is, as it is impossible to explore and chart it. With each newly awakened Pylian Beacon, the plane seems to grow larger and larger. And each new portal seems to lead somewhere stranger still. There is no consistency to Misamar, allowing for the unexpected at every turn...

1. Character Creation
(Note: For this game, your starting avatar will be vanilla, but you will start with a "skill" instead.)
First, do the following:
Choose your name.
Choose a race: Cyclops, Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human, Orc, Vampire
Choose a class: Pick any job title you want. Doesn't have to be in the card game.
Choose one or two colors from magic to be.
Second, answer these in the voice of your character:
What makes a person successful?
What's the best way to solve a problem?
What role do others serve in your life?
What's your favorite food?
What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself?
2. How to Play
To put it simply: You post what you do, I post what happens. I will guide you as to what options are available to you, but it's going to be very freeform. I will have some things set in stone on my end, like most of the locations and some quests and items and characters. The rest will be a fun as-we-go experience.
As you adventure, you will face enemies and obstacles. This is where the custom cards come in. Each challenge and enemy will have a numerical difficulty assigned to it. You will design one or more custom cards to address the challenge and I will grade each on a scale from 1 to 20 based on two sets of criteria:
(1) Does it flavorfully address the challenge at hand?
(2) Is it a good, balanced, Magic card?
If the total score of your cards (+/- any modifiers in play) meets or exceeds the challenge difficulty, you succeed. If not, you fail, and might suffer some consequences or have to redo it without your mana being refunded.
In my old games, combat and non-combat spell-casting where very different. In this game that will not be the case. There will still be the opportunity to engage in direct combat with your avatar, but the grading system will be the same as spells cast out of combat.
A new challenge in this game, though, will be new kinds of restrictions to your spell-casting. Expect each challenge, in addition to its numerical difficulty, to have specific rules and restrictions as to the kind of spell you're allowed to cast.
Mana is not unlimited. You will start out with some and find plenty of ways to replenish it along your adventures. This is something you will need to keep track of (see The Most Important Rule below).
Also you will not start with the ability to create permanents that actually last. Call it a symptom of the mist, call it balancing the game, but it's necessary to keep the playing field at least sort of fair and sensible. You can cast permanent spells to meet challenges, but they will dissipate at the end of the turn.
Another big change that will hopefully save the game from torturing me (and you) is the new travel system with the Pylian Stones. We're doing away with all the uninteresting "on the way" locations you had to pass through to get where you actually wanted to go. The new rule is: You can teleport X times per turn, where X is your level. That's it. This will make sense once the game is going. The second post of this thread I am reserving for an "encyclopedia," which at least to start out is just going to be location cards. It'll probably stay that way.
Finally, there will be character progression. As you complete challenges and do stuff, you'll gain experience. When you level up, your avatar will improve and/or you'll get other perks. Sometimes you'll be given options when you level up, other times it will be dictated for you.
Some turns will inevitably be more interesting than others. I will do my best to respond quickly enough that the boring turns don't last too long.
3. The Most Important Rule
Once your character is created, you are in charge of keeping track of and updating your own character's stats, abilities, inventory/equip-slots, quests and anything else worth keeping track of. Please include ALL of your character's basic information in EVERY POST you make in this thread. It might make sense to keep a sort of "log" or "journal," and/or to put all your character info for this game in a spoiler in your signature. Don't cheat.
It's also VERY HELPFUL if you can quote or paraphrase your last one or two actions so I can remember what you're up to without having to scroll back and check. The more time you save me, the faster you get to play and the more you get to do.
4. A Strong Recommendation
Read everything that happens to everyone whenever you have the time. Information that holds true for other people will often hold true for you. Also, how else will you know if someone else is in the same area as you, possibly even doing the same thing?
5. Real/Anticipated FAQ
So can I cast permanent spells? Yes, but they won't be permanent. Each spell exists solely in the context of the challenge it is created for. This isn't to say you won't acquire permanent permanents, but you probably won't cast them yourself.
What if I want to do something that isn't the challenge you gave me? Can I make a spell for that instead? Feel free to do this. If you do, I will treat it as a challenge, choose an appropriate difficulty, and then see if you succeeded.
What are spell mods and when are they applied? A spell mod increases or decreases the total score of your cards in a single turn. Mods do not apply to each individual spell when casting more than one in a turn. If you have an item that gives mods to certain kinds of spells and you cast multiple spells in a turn, that mod applies as long as at least one of your spells meets the mod's criteria.
How do I get mana? Do stuff and explore.
Can I pool mana with allies to cast spells? Yes, if you have their permission.
Why are you taking so long to respond to us? Livin' life.
How much can I do in a turn? As much as you want without doing my job for me. Don't feel like you have to give me only one thing to address each turn. If you want to investigate multiple places/objects/people in a turn, do so, just make sure you let me actually tell you what you find. Obviously submitting a card "ends your turn."
Can I speak for NPCs? Yes, in moderation, but you can't have them give you quests/items/new-information. It's more just for your personal RP desires.
Can I make up NPCs I see that you didn't tell me about? Yes, provided its reasonable they'd be there and you don't create TOO much lore/gameplay in the process. I make the lore/gameplay, here.
Can I make up locations you didn't tell us about? No. At least not on this plane.
Name: Knightess Gortak Chambles, the Goodly yet Befuddled (henceforth referred to as Chambles)
Race: Orc
Class: Barbarian Knight RW
What makes a person successful?: Lucky! Smarts if not lucky! Strength and punch if not have either.
What's the best way to solve a problem?: Talk to people, be goodly to help, cooperate and fairly! Way was taught to me by the Goodly Order and Knightess Cora Carazam, the Goodly yet Fierce! If doesn't work then CRUSH. Way was taught to me by me and fist whom crush.
What role do others serve in your life?: They keeps me on track to find the goals, because am easily befuddled! Friends are helpful and kind!
What's your favorite food?: Steaks and potatoes to build a MUSCLE.
What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself?: Favorite am how civilized, from past Chambles, was very bad and now am Goodly! Love the peace and helping of lawful citizens of all! Bad quality am befuddles, when confuse becomes angry, and often make a smash of windows and skulls. Apology!
What makes a person successful? Singleminded determination towards the goal at the expense of all else. And knowing to change the goal if it gets boring. What's the best way to solve a problem? Tell the dirtiest joke you know. Either the problem goes away because of your charm or you can kill 'em while they're laughing or groaning. What role do others serve in your life? Always nice for a tradesman to have customers, y'know. What's your favorite food? Mutton drenched in the spiciest pepper sauce I can find. What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself? I'm proud of my creativity. I'm not proud of my attention defic--was that a unicorn?
The first thing you hear is a shatter. It sounds like a dainty glass breaking as it hits the floor. Around you, a crowd of humans has turned to look at you. You find yourself standing on a strange platform: the Pylian Stone in the city of Arwendale (see location card in Post #2). Behind you, part of the structure of the stone, are three pillars, each with what looks like a stand for some sort of crystal. This is confirmed as you look down once more and see the remains of shattered gems.
An angry guard walks up to the lot of you. "You all. What have you done?" You look around at each other, then at him, then at each other. You do not recognize each other, or this place. You are not from this plane, and the last thing you rememeber, you were minding your own business when *poof,* you got transported here.
Within the hour, you find yourself in the throne room answering to Lord Ulfera, a brutish looking woman. "Your story sounds farfetched to say the least, but if you can prove your intentions are not against the city, we will leave you be. Your arrival, however it may or may not have happened, shattered the Pylian Gems that power our teleportation stones. Without them, we are stranded here, unable to leave the city. Halliwold down at the museum has always been somewhat of a hoarder. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a stash of gems hidden somewhere, though they are relics and incredibly valuable to those of Misamar, so he would likely not part with them lightly, if he will even admit to having them at all."
So here you all are, stuck in a strange city on a strange plane. Your first task, should you choose to accept it, is to get the Pylian Stone back up and running. What you do from there is up to you, thought it ought not be forgotten how strange it is that you came to be here in the first place...

What makes a person successful? Being the right type of person for your job.
What's the best way to solve a problem? Stab it in the back, take it's stuff.
What role do others serve in your life? People who can be bribed -- When I don't wan't to do the dirty work myself.
What's your favorite food? Rich dark chocolate...
What's your most favorite and least favorite part about yourself? I love everything about myself. I'm an egomaniac.
These are always fun--we'll see how long this one lasts. I know I've run this character in ValentineX's RPG, but she seems like a perfect fit for an unpredictable world.
"Don't listen to what others say you can and can't do. If you know what you want to do and are determined to do it, you can be successful at anything!"
What's the best way to solve a problem?
"Trust your instincts and try the first solution that you think of. If you can't easily solve the problem yourself, find someone that can."
What role do others serve in your life?
"Other elves, humans, and people of intelligent races serve as people to rely on when there is a problem I cannot solve alone, as well as people to share stories with during mealtime. Since I spend so much time in the wilds, it's very interesting to hear the stories of people who spend their time elsewhere. We often serve as teachers to each other. Less intelligent beasts of the wild serve as companions to aid me in situations where finding another person is impossible. It can be for hunting down a beast that's been terrorizing a village. Most importantly to me, beasts of the wild are play things. There's no greater feeling in the world than riding on a beast that loves to run across the field--except when it makes that sudden swerve and you just barely avoid falling off! Yee-ha!"
What's your favorite food?
"I never really thought about that..."
What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself?
"My least favorite quality is that no one seems to understand me and the way I think. Everyone always tells me I'm doing things the wrong way. So long as the job gets done and no harm not required by the task at hand is done, who cares about what method you use? I get scolded for my love of riding animals all the time. It doesn't harm them, so why not? My favorite quality is my charm an persuasion, mainly for beasts of the wild."

Chambles has felt quite fuddled for the last few hours, but thankfully these nice armed guards and queen Lordlady have been here to help. Hooray!
"Oh Queen Lordlady, beseeching to have a map? Chambles the Goodly yet Befuddled is lawful and Goodly! Here to help citizens of your! I think! Why else could such strangeness happen do?"
Chambles jauntily bumps Vinron on the shoulder, intent on following his lead to the museum. Since she doesn't know a dang thing about what's going on and he seems smart?
Thankfully the people I'm stuck here with look like the sorts I can get along with. And none of them is bad to look at, either. I leer monocularly at Chambles and Vinron, trying to come up with pickup lines. But maybe later.
"Whoa, lady, calm thy lordly self. If I broke your teleportation device I'll have it fixed... in a stitch!"
I bound out of the castle, cackling at my own pun, and confident that I will be able to follow my nose to the museum.

ILUK, VINRON, CHAMBLES
A guard is kind enough to show Chambles a map. Not trusting him to actually remember the directions, Iluk and Vinron both take note of it as well, then proceed out of the castle front gates when…
EVERYONE
*poof* Shalin and Rizzuz land in the Pylian Stone portal looking confused. They don't know how they got there, as was the case with the original three. Iluk, Vinron, and Chambles see these two newcomers. They could offer to bring them along and get them up to speed, or just leave them to their own confusion. The choice is theirs, not mine.
ILUK, VINRON, CHAMBLES, and maybe the others...
The original three, accompanied by the new two if all parties are willing, make their way to the museum: Open entering, they find it full of a truly strange array of relics. Some seem very old, while some seem even more futuristic than Arwendale itself. Perhaps some of these relics hold clues of possible adventure to come. A closer examination could be possible, but the task at hand remains. Halliwold Coffrey is not a hard man to find. The bearded and bespectacled but spry old man rushes up to you. "Greetings, greetings, and welcome! Many wonders, many mysteries, much history to be found here! If you desire a guided tour, it's normally 50 coins a pop, but with a group, I'd take 120 for the lot of you."
OOC NOTE: You may start designing cards as early as now. Like in my old games, I'll just decide on a difficulty after the fact that seems appropriate for the task at hand.
What makes a person successful? Patience. Without studiously considering all avenues of addressing a problem, one cannot be sure that they have made the best decision. What's the best way to solve a problem? Simply view the problem pragmatically and the solution is easily found. What role do others serve in your life? I consider beings of similar intellect as a blessing - it's just unfortunate when they also happen to be human. What's your favorite food? The blood of humans. I can't really eat anything else. Sure, normal human food still tastes alright, but nothing fills me up and gives me energy like a fresh neck of blood. What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself? My most valuable quality would be my longevity, as it gives me more time to reflect on goings-on and the like. My least favourite quality is my tendency to get irritable when others have trouble understanding... well, anything.

Chambles is disappointed not to have a map, but hey, she'll blunder her way around with enough luck! She does some figuring in response to Iluk's offer: 120 minus 120... zero? Sounds like zero. "I am counted in, friend!" She bows with a formality you wouldn't expect from an orc - she'll try to repay his kindness.
She'll be paying close attention to the magical museum-man's tales, and looking for information on the laws of the plane and of course the Gems. She's also watchful for any illegal activities. Well, things that she assumes would be illegal, at least.
Shalin followed the trio to the museum, dropping her jaw when she saw Iluk offer to foot the entire bill. Must be pretty nice to be that rich. "Does your group have room for another?" the short, young girl asked. "I'd like to tag along." Anyone nearby could tell she was at home in the wilderness. As such, she would mainly be interested in hearing about the untamed regions of this plane, and of course, the Gems. To her, every new region and every new creature she found was an adventure.

You both land with a thud on the cold hard stone in the center of Arwendale (see post #2 for Arwendale card). You're very much not from around here. Not from this plane, even, you're fairly sure. You look to your side and see each other, and both instantly become very uncomfortable. You take a moment to get your bearings, and some locals are kind enough to explain to you that people seem to be dropping in from out-of-plane these days and that they saw a few going to the museum, but they didn't know why. They also explain the mists and the whole issue with the gems in the Pylian Stone being broken. As you grasp that you're stranded here, you decide how best to proceed.
EVERYONE IN THE MUSEUM
The cyclops is kind enough to pay (-120 gold) for the tour, and you make your way around the exhibit led by the old fellow.
You come first to an orb with strange blue mist inside swirling as though there were a tiny updraft inside. "This is the Orb of Callahan -- one of a kind, it is! Same magic at work as over at Callahan Falls, which they say was the doing of some old mage, but if you ask me, no mage could do that. Some guy just found the falls and the orb first and slapped his name on 'em. Anyway..."
You come next to a cross-shaped relic mounted on the wall. At each end of each arm of the cross is a strange glowing diamond-shaped prism. "This is a Olyan Staff; It's a relic of an ancient race, more recent than the Pylians but still old. Older than me, even! That's a little joke, we're talking millenia here. I'm-- Well how old would you guess? Oh, nevermind. The Olyans were a warlike people, and this staff was allegedly a weapon. I've waved it around plenty though and it doesn't seem to do much." You all move on...
The next item on the tour is a strange skull with a large protruding horn and a bulky wide shape. "This is a Scruffle skull. You don't see many Scruffles these days. Most people think they're extinct, but me, I know better than that. Fierce beasts, they were. Too fierce to be all taken out by the likes of us." He moves right along to...
An ordinary looking rock. "This is a hoverstone." You all look at each other, because... "Yes, yes, I know it's not hovering now, but I'm telling you, if it were in a cluster, it would be. I know, I know, hoverstone clusters aren't to be disturbed, but I didn't take it myself, I just bought it, and no harm, no foul, right?"
The final stop on the tour is at an ancient sword, the blade half red, half blue. "This is the Sword of Antonine. Antonine was a dragon-slayer from centuries ago. This is the very blade he used to bring down Halthax himself. Of course, Halthax wasn't that much of a threat. That's the nice thing about the mist -- invasion isn't really a possibilty. Please don't touch the sword, though. It's very sharp."
"Well, that concludes the tour. I hope you appreciated it as much as I did, and let me know if you have any other questions. I just keep the current theme collection out at any given time, but there's always more in storage or undergoing restoration. I couldn't necessarily show you any of it, but I'm a font of knowledge, I promise you."

What is your most favorite and least favorite quality about yourself? My favorite quality is my mind. I feel like my intelligence can get me anywhere. My least favorite quality is probably the scar i have across my chest... I'd prefer not to talk about it.
I rise up from the ground, brushing the dust from my cloak. Looking to my right I see a flamboyantly-dressed man in a similar position to the one I was just in. I help him up, a brief pang of hunger hitting me as I grasp his hand.
"From what it appears, there are others in our predicament. Maybe we should head over to this museum and see what they have to say."
I head off to the museum without waiting for the man to follow - its his choice as to what he wants to do, after all. As I get to the entrance I see a strangely assorted group listening intently to an old man pointing at a dual-coloured sword. I walk over to the group to join them. It sounds as if the tour has just concluded. Maybe the group will share their knowledge with me so that we can figure out what's happening.

Chambles is quickly distracted from the task at hand by the beautiful craftsmanship of the sword. However, she was paying attention long enough to gather that this is a rather peaceful land where (typically) not much trouble occurs, thanks to the mists. Seems like a nice place!
"What is mists, wizened tour-man? Where do come from, and what means they? Always they been here?" In a brief show of intelligence, perhaps noticing the growing crowd of strange bedfellows, she also remembers - "Has people like we, (from outside plane of your!), showed up into city before?"

A strange flash of light, and as it clears, you find yourself in a strange place, standing on the Pylian Stone that holds the central point in the spiral city of Arwendale. A townsperson who by now has stationed himself here for just such arrivals explains to you that no, you're not the first ones to just show up here, and yes, it seem like you're stuck, and that yes, you might be able to find the other if you go to the museum and no, he doesn't know why they're there but it's down that way.

Goal: Draw a Crowd/Sell a Toy
Difficulty: 13/17
CARD: Well, if Ornithopter is free, I guess Whizzlebidoo costs one mana, but I don't know if it would really be uncommon, even. It's a good blocker especially in limited, but I mean, that's all it's gonna be. It's not the combo potential Ornithopter is, so it's just… there. It could use some flavor text to explain… what it is. 7/10
FLAVOR: The name sure sounds like a delight for kids and parents alike, but I sure wish I had any idea what this thing does or what it looked like. But construct creature type and the name check out well, so let's say… 6/10
Score: 13 + 1 = 14
HALF SUCCESS! Exp Gained: 4
A crowd gathers around, though nobody seems all that intent on buying the thing when they're seeing it now for free and not entirely sure how it works. After a little bit, the crowd thins out until eventually the whizzlebidoo tires out and falls back into pieces again. Still, you get the feeling those kids and parents will tell people they saw something cool today.
GRAETHYL, ILUK, SHALIN, RIZZUZ, CHAMBLES, VINRON
Graethyl and Rizzuz make their way over to the museum to join the rest of the new planar arrivals and see what's up, showing up just in time to catch the very end of the tour. They sort of sneak their way into the group and say quiet hellos.
The rest of the group bombards Halliwold with some additional questions, which he answers in no particular order. First up, Iluk asks about the antiquities trade and whether Halliwold is looking to make any trades/purchases: "Well, technically my one-eyed friend, all you see here are 'acquisitions.' We don't really trade in history. This is all here for the education and preservation of our culture, so while I will sometimes spend museum donations and fees on new materials, nothing ever truly leaves the museum collection once it's been acquired. That said, truly anything of historical merit has a place here, if you wish to bring something by and have it appraised. But no, there is no particular item I seek at this time."
Up next is Shalin, inquiring about the Scruffle. "Oh, goodness, well, first off, I wouldn't try to tame it if I were you. Far more wizened than you have tried, and they all came back dead. But if you want to at least try to track down a fossil, they used to live in heavily forested zones. We recently seem to have been cut off from most of them, but I'm sure that could change pretty soon. There's been some weirdness going on with the gems this days."
Round three of the interrogation falls to Chambles, "Oh, goodness, you lot really aren't from around here. Well, that may explain some things, I guess. The mists are, well, they're the mists. They're dark, they're scary, and if you look too far in any one direction, that's what you're seeing. They're completely, utterly, and unpreventably fatal I'm afraid. Nobody knows how long they've been around, but certainly as long as any recorded histories. But turning back to the issue of you lot, no I can't say we've had extra planar visitors before. That's… well, historic. If any of you go on to do something important, my successor will likely be digging around your graves one day to put your stuff on display here."
Meanwhile, while Halliwold is distracted by these questions, Vinron attempts to locate any nearby gems.
Goal: Where are the gems?
Challenge: 15
CARD: This is pretty neat. It can sometimes fail completely, sometimes be great, but it doesn't do all that much which is perfect for a cheap little common. A part of me thinks it's still breakable somehow, but I don't know how exactly so let's just say it works. Flavor text is wonky but that's just language gap. 8/10
FLAVOR: Sure, I suppose. It's not clear where exactly this came from. It feels more like what you're doing is a spell you would use, not an item you would summon and immediately sacrifice, but that's a minor thing. The point is, the mechanic of the card fits the goal and that's what matters. 8.5/10
Score: 16.5
Challenge: 15
SUCCESS
Exp Gained for Vinron: 5
The shard materializes in Vinron's hand before evaporating into a blue energy that seems down through the floor below, leading you to believe that the gems you seek are likely in the basement of this very structure.
Graethyl sees Vinron's attempt to locate the gems.
Now there's a guy who has the right idea. It appears as though there is something, possibly the Gems we need, underneath where we currently stand. Time to see what the old man knows.

EVERYONE:

GRAETHYL, JACK

The shard materializes in Vinron's hand before evaporating into a blue energy that seems down through the floor below, leading you to believe that the gems you seek are likely in the basement of this very structure.
