Can I submit cards to the DCC that I've made but have posted elsewhere on the forum, though? Or is it in bad taste? (Oh and vice versa)
I've never seen anyone discourage it, and I'd always felt it was a natural thing to do. The cards you like you want more feedback on, even if it's just a poll.
Another round of quick comments:
Vermillion Sniper by aftermarketradio
- That's a cute ability. Cute can be damaging, and the busywork here is a bit much, but I still like the package it produces. Very neat.
As I post more and more cards, I am discovering that I am definitely a Vorthos Johnny (if there is such a thing). I tend to ask "did I capture the idea with the card" rather than "is the card actually playable," and I am satisfied when someone "gets" what the card is trying to represent. So, I'm glad you see the little story that's being told within the card. Every now and then I get a happy accident and make something flavorful and playable.
Murderous Rampage by MDenham
- REALLY swingy. Sure, you need a creature to make it work, but any reasonable guy gives you a 2 for 1 or better. And since it's an additional cost, they can't even respond by killing your source creature. Doesn't need a lot to work and when it does it's insanely good.
Yeah, that ran into a couple of issues. I was aiming for something between Murder and Plague Wind - preferably as close to the middle of that range as possible - and I think I undercosted it by about 1.
Mostly it was just designed around the name, though.
Rush_Clasic: Today's card's P/T-setting ability should be worded "~'s power and toughness are each equal to the number of names among creatures you control." based on existing wordings, I believe.
Raving Bloodhound3R
Creature - Hound {C}
Haste
Desperation 1R(You may cast this card for its desperation cost. If you do, it enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.)
3/2
if this cost 1R for a 2/1 with something like a 2 kicker for a +1/+1 counter it'd have more mass appeal. the desire for all upside possibly trumps flavor
if this cost 1R for a 2/1 with something like a 2 kicker for a +1/+1 counter it'd have more mass appeal. the desire for all upside possibly trumps flavor
It's clearly a design meant for a set that uses -1/-1 counters in the first place.
That said, I find the wording more entertaining if it's still done as kicker anyway:
Raving Bloodhound :1mana::symr:
Creature - Hound {C}
Kicker 2
Haste
If Raving Bloodhound wasn't kicked, it enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter.
3/2

They'd evolve toward something like what I wrote sooner or later, I think. Their goal is always to make cards with clear, understandable language, and keeping the focus on the creatures themselves rather than the names "feels" more comprehensible for players. At least, it has in the small bit of research I've done on the subject. (Very small.)
@ fooligan: you forgot to add "card" after the forest bit. And shuffle library?
Thanks mate! It's important to reinforce the fact that things that aren't in play are considered cards! It would also be terrible if a search card was ever printed without shuffle. Can you imagine the sort of mess that might cause!?
Redefine by EzraEliot
- Entwine doesn't do anything here. Or rather, it makes the final clause the last thing that happens, after all the counters have turned from the first clause. It's also odd to refer to counters as being "on the battlefield", even if it technically is true. "All +1/+1 counters among creatures..." sounds better.
Nevertide Watcher by MDenham
- You'd need some odder wording to make this work. Something like "Other creatures can't phase in while Nevertide Watcher is phased out or on the battlefield." I think. Phasing is so frickin weird. Anyway, it's a neat card idea, sort of like a Helvault for phasing.
Explosive Strength by Altaurus321
- This is a neat idea and a very useful card all over. It can be a Pyroclasm or so much more. It might cause some technical headaches for people that don't understand how trample works, but that also makes this a great strategic finisher. I'd make it a sorcery instead, though; there's really no reason to make it an instant since all the functions want you to play it on your turn.
Teywern, Nature's Whisper by Bolas, the Mindsculptor
- This guy just falls flat. He's such a boring planeswalker. It's also a pet peeve of mine to see heavily green costed cards that make any color of mana. It sort of defeats the deckbuilding purpose to allow any color yet force a heavy green commitment to cast it.
Knowledge Drain by FreshMeat
- I'd make this targeted. It's already got an enormously swingy effect just forcing one person to discard a handful of fuel.
Scare to Death by void_nothing
- I like this better with only one if clause, though I don't think badly of the current version. I like the theme. It is kind of annoying that you have to target one of your own creatures if you happen to have three with intimidate and the opponent only has one creature. Just slightly, though, since you're winning in that situation more often than not. I'd also prohibitively cost this. 3BB sorcery. Swingy effects and all that.
Blades Raised by arbitraryarmor
- I've been working with a mechanic called "mastery" for a while that could lend an alternative wording to your card: Each creature you control gains first strike until end of turn. Then each creature you control with two or more instances of first strike gains double strike until end of turn. Not saying that's necessarily better (I have other reasons for requiring this wording beyond a single card). Just throwing it out there. Anyway, double strike is crazy good. I'd probably increase the cost on this card and make it a sorcery.
Acolyte's Forge by ManyCookies
- Increasing Vengeance costs five to do a copy job twice and you have to spend that on the same turn. Your version, while having the option of just blanking, easily gets insane efficient. It's a tough thing to cost. If you really want it to just cost a sacrifice, the casting cost is gonna need to be higher. As is, I'd just slap a mana activation onto it. 4 mana or so to go with the sacrifice.
Dimir Crypturge by Ink-Treader
- "Target instant or sorcery spell gains cipher." This is the type of ability I'd expect to require a t. The idea of doing it multiple times in a turn isn't necessarily bad or overpowered considering the cost, but it's more of a grindy mechanic and that implies a certain investment.
Traveling Sage by fooligan
- "Then shuffle your library." Strictly better Sylvan Ranger. Not saying that's bad. Just pointing it out.
Backlash by Blydden
- Backlash. Rather color restrictive, though I suppose that's fine given what it does. A fine card, though I think it's the type of thing that's more interesting if you add some restrictions. Essence Backlash is a good example of what I mean.
Overhaul by SecretInfiltrator
- Let me start by saying that I've loved this cycle. Remind me to do a full, more indepth review of it. This isn't my favorite entry, but blue/red is perhaps the hardest color combination to come up with interesting ideas for, and this is at least good in that regard. The circumstances where you'd cast this on an opponent are rather thin, but at least that isn't it's only feature.
Shapeshifery by Rudyard
- Pretty damn elegant, really. Tons of uses, from kill spell to cloning their best guy to mega-Johnny combos akin to Volrath's Shapeshifter's glory days.
Flesh Into Mana by RukarumelFieldJournal
- That name is such a groaner. The mana boost seems awfully unlike blue as well.
Burn the Devoter by Raziel_X007223
- I gotta mention this every time I see it: mono-hybrid symbols look ugly as hell when combined with standard symbols. WOTC didn't do that for a reason. Making it a tribal demon seems awfully weird in a color that's only ever had two mono-colored demons in its entire history. As for the wording: You can't cast ~ unless your devotion to red is three or greater. / ~ deals damage to target player equal to half your devotion to red, rounded (up/down). The restriction on casting this is POINTLESS. Pretend we removed that: how often are you going to cast this for 1 damage? They're just extra words that do almost nothing.
Whimwhisper Eidolon by Mix Master Mikaeus
- There's never been a one-mana creature with the Thieving Magpie ability because that would simply be NUTS. How many games have you started without a meaningful play on the first two turns? Probably A LOT. So, if they snap this little guy off on turn one, and you kept a slightly slow hand (not even a dismally slow one), you're already falling WAY behind in card advantage. Compare to Vedalken Heretic.
Not a ton, if I recall correctly. Not quite a Sakura Tribe-Elder, is it?
Hahahaha you speak my language my friend! But if course, not even the tribe elder, foremost among its kind is exactly a Sakura-Tribe Elder anymore is it?
I remember many a game where you could rely on it to kill an attacking creature and prevent 2 jitte counters or be involved in some similar silly trick. 1 toughness creatures were a poor investment indeed in those times, saving an eternal witness or the like.
Who says they can't? Apparently they've never tried.
Like, seriously, I AM NOW ON AN ARCHON CRUSADE!

Also I always felt like we could probably understand black's thematic place on the colour wheel by analyzing what's black about bw angles. (Kinda unrelated I know)

It's actually worded as intended. It's not supposed to block creatures from phasing back in if it's phased out itself, and as such it requires a little bit of playing with it to let you use it as a means of annoying your opponent. (The easiest way, obviously, is taking an extra turn. He phases back in during that turn's untap step, and you just leave him alone, keeping your opponent's creature held up in limbo.)
That's all I should say for today. I should try to make another land soon. My last one won my first DCC day, after all.
Can I submit cards to the DCC that I've made but have posted elsewhere on the forum, though? Or is it in bad taste? (Oh and vice versa)
Well, red has the least design space of any color. Red commons, for example, is probably the hardest general category to design.
I've never seen anyone discourage it, and I'd always felt it was a natural thing to do. The cards you like you want more feedback on, even if it's just a poll.

Memento Mori, if the nineth lion ate the sun.

Sometimes mechanics shouldn't be all upside.
The keyword policy nowadays calls for almost all keywords to be upsides, but not necessarily strict upsides.
