Related note: I have been awarding 2 points for critiques per round, as-per my conversation with void-nothing earlier in this thread, and as-stated in each round I've posted so far. Regardless of what's decided going forward, I think it's only fair to continue that trend this month.
Thanks for the clarification Rocco. I usually just assume people are scoring the contest in the standard fashion, and I don't generally read that part of the OP. I probably should though. I couldn't remember where we ended up on scoring for crits after our most recent community discussion.
My round 2 crits are up, and I'm transferring the question I posted in the round thread to the discussion thread, where it belongs.....
Flatline: I like the goblin, though I’m unsure soldier is appropriate. The merfolk is also quite interesting, although it does become a little odd in that the merfolk bounced returns untapped, so oyu could easily get an ETB effect over and over for 2 taps. Also, summoning sickness is not a defined game term.. though I think that might be a blue ability. Interesting reach
It's possible that I don't understand the meaning of "defined game term", but "summoning sickness" is referred to in the reminder text of Dryad Arbor, so it seems like it must be considered a defined term. I don't bring this up as a complaint in any way, I'm just curious to know if what I'm saying here is correct.
Edit: I just realized the Dryad Arbor in my card tag doesn't show the reminder text, but the original one does.

I went to bed last night before round 4 was posted and when I woke up, pretty much every possible entry for the challenges had been made already...
Yeah, I kinda already warned about being too boxed in with challenge ideas. There is little creativity in designing another morphling, as the cycle is so strict. A contest without creativity and uniqueness doesn't leave room for any of us to show who has the talent.

It seems like everyone shares this same basic opinion. The criticism of this month's challenges has been duly noted, both by me, and I'm sure by other potential contest hosts. Hopefully, my unpopular challenges will end up improving the quality of subsequent CCLs for this reason. If you'll just soldier through this round, the finals will be free from the kinds of specific constraints of the previous rounds, and then I'll be waiting to try hosting again until I've had more time to observe and participate as a designer.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself Rocco. Personally, I have found the challenges leading up to the current challenge to be quite reasonable and fun. Maybe it's just me, but when you asked us to complete an incomplete cycle in rounds 1 and 2, I thought about what the other, nonexistent cards in each cycle might look like. Even without knowing that we would have to go back and finish one of the cycles, I thought it was in the best interest of the design to put some thought into whether or not what I was designing could actually be completed as a typical five card cycle. Because of the way I approached the challenges for the first two rounds, I already had pretty fleshed out designs in mind for the remainder of each my cycles. I don't mean for this to sound rude, but if you designed yourself into a corner, I don't think you put an adequate amount of thought into the original challenges. Basically, if you designed a card to fit into a cycle in which the remaining cards couldn't exist, you didn't really design a good card for that cycle. Does that make sense? It's a different story with the current challenge though. There just isn't a lot of design space in the unfinished cycles we've been given to work with (especially the Morphling cycle). It's going to be really hard to differentiate between the entries during the judgment phase.

I for one like these narrow challenges better than the regular "design a card, but it has to have words on it" challenges. I recognize that there's problems with them and apparently the larger portion of designers on here like the broad ones. But let it be known that I liked every round so far very much and I'm super happy with where the rounds got me. Sure, there's not much variance you can do with the Morphlings, but now the little details matter. Sure, indestructible seems like the obvious choice, as does menace for the black Morphling. But I actually replaced menace with skulk now, so maybe there's something else instead of indestructible which could make things different. That's still exciting and will show which of us can still be creative within little space.

Exactly this, yes. All of the challenges so far are ones I myself would enjoy banging my head against. It's when creativity is deemed impossible or irrelevant that mine is inspired the most. It appears that the prevailing preference for contest design differs substantially from this, and any future challenges I come up with will reflect this information.
On a totally unrelated note, I may be without power for much of the weekend. Would anyone not competing in the Top 5 be willing to act as backup host for scoring this round and posting the finals if I am conspicuously absent by the deadline?
EDIT: Actually, if all of the entrants would like, we can just end the round now, and get straight to critiques. It's gotta be unanimous, though.
+1 - since no one bothered to make a flavortext for their second card I don't feel like making one either.

As far as the current challenge is concerned, ignore me. I probably should have just kept my mouth shut. I think that Rocco has done a great job as host thus far, and I certainly don't want anybody to think I feel otherwise. I'm not the only participant in these contests, and everybody enjoys different things, so who am I to judge? It's not like the designers at Wizards aren't given similar tasks. and it would've been even more difficult if IcariiFA hadn't basically ignored the modal challenge by making an enchantment for an instant/sorcery challenge.
I'm sorry, but did the challenge say it required an instant or sorcery? No, it didn't.
Now, if your or others interpretation of the cycle is that it should require an instant or sorcery, that's totally fair. Judge me accordingly. I 100% understood I was taking a risk in making that part of my entry feel like it was off the cycle, but I felt justified in taking that step into the unexpected as the three cards did not seem explicit to me in regards to typing. That said, it's insulting for you to say I "ignored" the challenge, as If I didn't put thought into what it was or what I was doing. Feel free to disagree with my design decision, but don't treat it as thoughtless.
I meant no offense IcariiFA. I'm sorry if I sounded too harsh. I understand why you did what you did, but I feel the cycle does not call for an enchantment. I doesn't help that the white card in the "cycle" has basically already been printed, and it is an instant.

This not so much, as while it "could" fit the cycle it was not a part of it and as it would overlap with the black card.
I've gotta say, I've never disagreed with the results of a contest more than I do with the the results of the current CCL round. I feel like this round was a bit of a trap round for me. I honestly feel my entries would be by far the most likely to actually see print in the cycles they are meant for, but since everyone here weighs uniqueness above all else, I didn't even make the top 3 in two out of the four results.
