Yes, I apologize for that. I had to choose between waiting getting another judgement in for players I already had a scare for and actually starting a round that already lasts into the next month. I hope I picked the lesser evil. At least your direct adversary had to go through the same treatment.
If it helps any, my short evaluation would be that this would work much much better as a (black or red) enchantment with a 'death'-trigger that makes you pay 3 mana to return it to the board. Right now it's highly confusing for so many reasons. That being said, it should have amazing gameplay and I wish they'd print a card much like this. Great concept. Also love the flavortext

Second: You all deserve an apology, and I'm sorry. Here's the short version of why I didn't finish my judging in april,
My computer was having a lot of issues which have now been fixed (by getting a new computer.)
I had one of my worst depressive episodes to date in late April and early May.
Finals Month is hellish, like for many.
Still, it isn't much of an excuse, and I should have still finished my judging then, and I am deeply sorry.
June's MCC will begin today in about 8 hours, and it will have us exploring both Bolas's created plane and the multiverse wide battles of Commander!

A formatting question regarding Embalm (which I am sure any judge would be happy to answer):
Take for example this sample card:
Anubia, Keeper of the Worthy3W
Legendary Creature - Human Priest (M)
Lifelink, vigilance
Other creatures in your graveyard have Embalm 3W (3W, Exile this card from your graveyard: Create a token that's a copy of it, except it's a white Zombie with no mana cost. Embalm only as a sorcery.)
Embalm 5W Only the God-Pharoah's chosen shall have my blessing.
3/3
If Embalm is referenced multiple times on a permanent, one of the times/costs being a static ability granted to other creatures in your graveyard (the Embalm 3W), and the other being an ability on the card itself (the Embalm 5W), do I have to spell out the reminder text for Embalm in both instances?
It it has to be fully referenced twice, then the words don't fit into the card box. Please let me know soon what the conclusion is, thanks!
(which I am sure any judge would be happy to answer)
I guess I know who you're thinking about...
do I have to spell out the reminder text for Embalm in both instances
No, you don't. Reminder text must be in the first instance of the keyword, but you can skip it in following instances without any problem. Examples: Hopeful Eidolon (lifelink), Sensei Golden-Tail (bushido), Rhox Pikemaster (first strike), Phyrexian Swarmlord (infect), Marchesa, the Black Rose (dethrone), Bellowing Tanglewurm (intimidate is no longer supported but that doesn't change the point), Sublime Archangel (exalted, the second reminder text is there but it's not the ordinary reminder text for exalted, rather it informs you what happens when a creature has multiple instances of the keyword). There are also probably more I missed.

The first time, it's required. The second time, no. Do note, however, that the reminder text for embalm spells out exactly what creature types the creature is, so make sure to allow it to be modular in your reminder text.

Main challenge (1/2): Have to deduct a point here - blinking and flickering are used as synonyms. The "delayed" blinking you did here could confuse players (expecting the permanent to immediately return to the battlefield). Other than that it's a keyword I definitely expect it to come at some point.
@Bravelion: You specifically mention that it is unfun to be able to steal lands with my card. The card, however, specifically says "nonland"
Yes, that's right, my bad. You can still blink a land though (the trigger just says "permanent") but you can't play that land while it's exiled because the static ability specifies nonland. I'll correct that. It doesn't change that much though, being stolen one permanent a turn and two on the first turn still isn't that fun even if they aren't lands.

I'd be willing to drop out and judge if absolutely necessary, but I don't feel qualified to judge the MCC because I haven't imbibed the rules mechanics from Bravelion enough yet (that's only half-joking!). I like to think I provide helpful feedback, and maybe in a few months I'd be more likely to volunteer. I wouldn't want to judge this present competition unless the contest were going to be cancelled due to a lack of judges.

Need to say, U is my favorite rarity since forever. It's the most interesring rarity to design a custom card - commons are too hard for design when you want to make something unique and rares/mythics are too easy because you can do whatever you want. Uncommon is a point where real fun begins - you can do it complex enough but not so much and include two (maybe three but I personally prefer two or one but crazy) abilities to perfect synergy which I like the most.
A strong core of uncommons instead of limited bomb rares also won me limited play a lot of times because it's easier to find (not only open as 1st pick) and build around.
I'm not sure I understand this, I hope that's meant as a good thing. Anyway, don't let anything I do or did prevent you from trying to judge if you feel like it. By the way, I'd have no problem in helping you in your first judging experience if you need it, as I've done with others before.
It's not good or bad - I just don't have quite the same eye as you for what the MCC labels as "quality" issues, and I think I'll acquire it gradually over time the more cards I design and the more competitions I participate in. Yes, if I somehow end up judging this month I'll enlist your help. Thank you for offering

I think you should go for it kjsharp. I've interacted with you enough at this point to know that you do a good job of analyzing cards for design, development, and creativity, which are the most difficult aspects of judging. Quality is easy because it is much less subjective than all of the other areas. If you miss something, someone would most likely let you know, and there wouldn't be a lot of room for argument (although some truly unique designs lack any precedent for wording, which can lead to some debate). I recommend you take bravelion up on his offer to help you if needed. You couldn't find a better mentor for judging, especially as far as quality is concerned.

I just don't have quite the same eye as you for what the MCC labels as "quality" issues,
It feels a little strange from my own point of view to see this particular side of me getting appreciated (it still feels good of course), because I'm not actively doing anything, literally. It just comes naturally to me, I am a person that instinctively see details, in real life too, and if they're even just a bit off it irks me. I can't help it, that's who I am as a person. I have a natural gift and I'm just using it. For once, it proves useful. It not always does in real life... sometimes yes, but often no.
and I think I'll acquire it gradually over time the more cards I design and the more competitions I participate in.
Yes, I think experience will definitely help you even if you don't have that same natural eye.

Deal! Again, I've already done this for at least four or five other people on their first time judging, so you're just going to be the next. No problem!
Congratulations to Raptorchan for winning the MCC of May! Posting an uncommon may have been a bold move, but it certainly paid off.
Adding myself to the congratulations! A card doesn't have to be rare to be a good design, and this is a good lesson for everyone to remember. Also, designing good cards at lower rarities is often harder than designing rares, so even more congratulations for that!
Thanks a ton to everyone who judged and played in May. Changing things up proved to be more trouble than I expected, but I think we had fun.
Thanks to you for hosting. I for one definitely had fun. I think this month will be remembered for a long time, and I mean this in a good way. You had the courage and boldness to try something new and it worked. I wouldn't want this to happen every month, but this proves that a little experimentation can be done once in a while. As other judges, I knew it in advance but I think the plan to surprise people totally worked. Awesome job!
EDIT: I laughed when I saw that spreadsheet with the standard deviations in the May Round 4 thread! With all players getting the same number of judges in the finals there is no functional difference between the sum and the average, one is just a multiple of the other, but going so far as to calculate the standard deviations made me smile. But now I wonder, is there any actual information those standard deviation values can give us? Or was it just something nice to do?
Note about June Round 1
Finally, about June Round 1, the design deadline has theoretically passed and we have 26 submissions (excluding one placeholder) and 3 judges, counting kjsharp as a player for now. This would mean brackets with 8, 9 and 9 players, with more than half getting eliminated. I have judged brackets of nine people before, and while I would again without any problem, it takes its time. A fourth judge would make things much easier and fair (two brackets of 6 and two of 7, with just about one third of the players eliminated as usual). What do we do? Do we proceed or do we wait for the fourth judge?

I turned out to be my own worst enemy again this month in designing a card that got slammed by a subtle rule, otherwise this would of been a much closer contest.

Ok, if y'all don't find another judge by this evening then I'll judge. Please try to find a 4th judge though in the next few hours though, since (i) I've not yet participated in an MCC, (ii) I'd rather design cards for Amonkhet than for multiplayer products, which is the theme of the CCL, and (iii) I would rather be designing cards.
But I want the competition to be a good experience for everyone, and it seems like a 4th judge would facilitate that, and I think I have the skillset for it, so I'm begrudgingly willing to drop my submission and judge. If I do judge, I would like one of the judges to provide feedback on my submission though.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
I am trying not to be salty, but what a point of being judge if someone is ignoring the judging.
Missing judgments have sort of been a theme for may :/
I set today as the deadline. So tomorrow morning I will call out the winner, regardless of any missing judgments.
It's just that the last time I did that we got complaints. That's why I did that rather extended deadline, so that there's time for everyone to judge, but also so that we don't have to wait too long.

I think this is the first time I've seen a final round uncommon win an MCC!

It looks like y'all have 3 judges. PM me if I am needed, but like I said, I really would prefer to participate in the competition as a designer.
I'm not sure I understand this, I hope that's meant as a good thing. Anyway, don't let anything I do or did prevent you from trying to judge if you feel like it. By the way, I'd have no problem in helping you in your first judging experience if you need it, as I've done with others before.

A strong core of uncommons instead of limited bomb rares also won me limited play a lot of times because it's easier to find (not only open as 1st pick) and build around.
Edit: No pressure of course.

Thanks a ton to everyone who judged and played in May. Changing things up proved to be more trouble than I expected, but I think we had fun.

Adding myself to the congratulations! A card doesn't have to be rare to be a good design, and this is a good lesson for everyone to remember. Also, designing good cards at lower rarities is often harder than designing rares, so even more congratulations for that!

I'll get you all next month
By the way, not that I think it changes the outcome for me, but my scores are almost all wrong on this chart... maybe you sorted it after caculating the totals? I'm confused.
Finally, I keep editng this post so I know it's confusing but:
I am to understand that your review, Folza, has almost no commentary? This is unnacceptable as an MCC judge and needs to be addressed.
But I want the competition to be a good experience for everyone, and it seems like a 4th judge would facilitate that, and I think I have the skillset for it, so I'm begrudgingly willing to drop my submission and judge. If I do judge, I would like one of the judges to provide feedback on my submission though.
