Dont feel bad flatline. I got an unearned DQ for the last month. The card may have problems as you have rules lawyered out for us but that has never equaled a dq so long as the main challenge was met in the history of the competition. I'm really glad this is shutting down.

Your card was missing rules text to make it functional. I DQ'd someone else last month because the submitted card did not work. If it isn't functional, how is that fair to the other players? "Well, your card couldn't be used in playtesting because it's fundamentally broken, but you managed to not misspell any words, so you can advance to the next round." Setting aside the DQ, you would have had a score of 12.5. The result was the same either way.
Please know the rubric if you're going to host. I took lots of heat for not doing so as host myself and I'm passing the lesson on. You don't DQ for a card not being viable if it meets the main challenge--as stated in the OP for the competition each round. Saying the end result would have been the same doesn't make it okay. It's fair to other players because you score the viability as 0 and the card almost certainly doesn't advance. That would have been fine. What you did was insulting and just provided more affirmation of my preexisting feelings towards this competition.
EDIT: Disregard this. I had an idea, but I've chosen to go with a different one and I don't need these questions answered anymore. Feel free to answer them anyway if you think they might be useful to somebody else, but I don't need these anymore. Original post after the line. More questions for round 2.
Suppose I want to use emerge and I make a card with the exact same text as Abundant Maw but with no mana cost. Having no mana cost gives no other means to cast the card than emerge.
1. Does the cast ability count for subchallenge 1, as the only way you can cast the card and trigger that ability is via emerge? I think the answer is no, but I thought to ask just to be sure rather than making assumptions.
2. What if I substitute the cast ability with a different ability that cares about the sacrificed creature? For example if the Maw drained X life, where X is the sacrificed creature's cmc, power, or toughness.
3. Or would it just have to be literally "When CARDNAME's emerge cost is paid" or "if you paid CARDNAME's emerge cost"?

Much like Ancestral Vision, the card can be cast via other spells and effects, such as Cascade or the Expertise cycle, so it does qualify. The main challenge is to design a card with an alternate casting cost; the second subchallenge was to give an excuse to switch things up. For example, say, a creature with a Dash but no normal casting cost (which may be what a modern version of Viashino Cutthroat might look like).

1. No, it would not, which is why I used Rix Maadi Reveler as an example. It has a different effect if the Spectacle cost was paid.
2. You're not getting an additional effect with a sacrificed creature, you're gaining an additional cost that is built into the spell.
3. Basically this, which is why I chose a specific card to illustrate an example that would meet the subchallenge.
EDIT: I added another note to the Clarifications, primarily regarding Subchallenge 2.
This round is giving me a headache. Trying to make something both elegant and sensible is proving difficult. May I request that we be allowed to design our own alternate casting cost mechanics?

Your request is denied.
However, you can always bypass one or both of the subchallenges. Better to lose 1 or 2 points there than a handful from unbalanced or convoluted cards.

First of all, thanks for the judgment of my card. It is quite good. I know judging is a thankless, often tiresome task. I appreciate all those that volunteer to do it. That said, I just want to mention that the way I made darkness possessive is correct as far as I know. Of course, the way you have it also considered correct. The only time adding an s to the end of a word to make it possessive is incorrect is when it is a plural noun that ends in s. I don't think you took points off for this, I just wanted to point it out since I get the idea that you're saying the way I have it is wrong. I'd also like to quickly point out that, as a rule, MTG opts to add the s to possessive, singular nouns that end in s. Purphoros's Emissary for example.

Yes, Magic (i.e. Chicago manual of style) ALWAYS uses the apostrophe-s - what Leo always calls the Saxon genitive - to form a possessive, even after a double s. See Enchantress's Presence. This is an objective issue.

Further proof nothing Chicago style, other than the blues, is worthwhile. Not their politics, not their pizza, and not their punctuation. However, I did not remove a .25 for a difference of opinion on the possessive. It was for the word 'cost' after 'upkeep' in the ability. It should not be there.

Well that too is objective, we can easily see that in Hibernation's End - if that was all you took off quality marks for, then no need to change the score.

I'm going to appeal that Hemlock NOT be disqualified in his entry as The_Hittite considered. In his clarifications, Eventide posted a list of example mechanics that was inclusive, but not expressly exhaustive. And while in post #10933 he said not to make a new mechanic, I don't believe his entry counts and more than the Shoals have a mechanic. If just appending the trap subtype to a card and giving it an alt cost is good enough then this should be too.
Ultimately I'm just a player and not a judge so I don't have any weight in this, but it's my take and I figured I'd weigh in.

(2.5/3) Quality: How long does flying and indestructible last? I know I already mentioned this, but it really needs some sort of marker to show if it lasts indefinitely.
This is objectively a fault in the judgement. Take a look at Flame-Wreathed Phoenix, Maelstrom Djinn, or Fated Return. Abilities can be given without duration and it does not need to be stated as such.
All other complaints I have about the judgement are subjective, so I won't bring them into contention.
Hemlock did not design a new mechanic for an alternate casting cost. Classic cards such as Force of Will and Fireblast have alternate casting costs which have never been defined by a specific mechanic. As such, I would also not DQ Hemlock. The only condition was to not use Flashback or Suspend.
I PM'd both Algernone25 and IcariiFA after their initial submissions because their cards would have caused them to be DQ'd. One or both utilized Unearth, which is not an alternate casting cost. If I thought a submission should have been DQ'd, they wouldn't have made it into a judgment bracket.

• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)

Ultimately I'm just a player and not a judge so I don't have any weight in this, but it's my take and I figured I'd weigh in.
